Elf School
Somewhere, hidden amongst thorny brambles, is a little kingdom of elves and fairies.
Everyone who lives here is very, very small.
BEN: I’m Ben Elf. (TRUMPETS)(RUFF, RUFF!)
HOLLY: And I’m Princess Holly. (JINGLES) (RUFF!) Come on, let’s play!
BEN: Wait for us!
(Ben and Holly both giggle)
Narrator: Ben and Holly’s little Kingdom. (TRUMPET)
Narrator: Today’s adventure starts at the meadow.
Narrator: Elf School
Nanny Plum: Now, Princess Holly! What’s the name of THIS flower?
Holly: That’s easy, Nanny! It’s a daisy!
Nanny Plum: Yes, yes. An elf might call it a daisy. But a fairy Princess would call it a Bellis Perennis.
Holly: (Sighs) Bellis Perennis?
Nanny Plum: Correct! Now, what is this bluebell called?
Holly: Uh, bluebell?
Nanny Plum: Oh, no, no. A fairy Princess would call it a Hyacinthoid non-scripta.
Holly: (Sighs) Oh, Nanny! Nature class is so boring! Why do I have to learn the proper names of all these flowers?
Nanny Plum: That’s the stuff a Fairy Princess needs to know.
Holly: Maybe I don’t want to be a Fairy Princess!
(Playful music)
Ben: Hi, Holly!
Holly: Hi, Ben! Where are you going?
Ben: I’m off to Elf School!
Holly: Oh! What do you do at Elf School?
Ben: We learn how to make toys.
Holly: That sounds fun!
Ben: It is! Elves love making toys and I’m an Elf! (Toots trumpet)
(Ben and Holly giggle)
Holly: I want to make toys! Nanny, can I go to Elf School too?
Nanny Plum: But you’re not an elf. You’re a Royal Fairy Princess!
Holly: Oh, Please, Nanny Plum!
Ben: Please, Nanny Plum, let Holly come!
Nanny Plum: (Sighs) Oh, OK!
Ben and Holly: Hooray! (Giggle)
Nanny Plum: But I’ll come along too. Just to make sure you don’t get into any mischief.
Ben: OK, but hurry. We can’t be late for Elf School!
Holly: (Sings) We’re going to Elf School, we’re going to Elf School.
Ben and Holly: (Sing) We’re going to Elf School, We’re going to Elf School! We’re going to Elf School! We’re going to Elf School!
Ben: Come on. Elf School is at the top of the tree!
Holly: Ooh!
(Scampering feet)
The Wise Old Elf: Good morning, boys and girls.
Children: Good morning, the Wise Old Elf!
The Wise Old Elf: Ahem. Ah, Nanny Plum!
Nanny Plum: Hello, Mr Old Elf.
Holly: Hello!
Nanny Plum: Princess Holly wants to see what Elves get up to in your little school.
The Wise Old Elf: Hm. Very well. Holly may join the class.
Holly: Oh, goody! (Giggles)
The Wise Old Elf: But no magic or flying, please.
Holly: OK.
Ben: Holly! Sit next to me!
(Holly giggles)
The Wise Old Elf: Ahem! No flying! You will kindly walk. Flying is not allowed at Elf School.
Nanny Plum: (In low voice) Only because Elves can’t fly.
The Wise Old Elf: That’s right, Mistress Plum. Elves can’t fly. But we do have very good hearing!
(Children laugh)
The Wise Old Elf: And Elves are very good at making toys. So today we are going to make toys.
Children: Hooray!
The Wise Old Elf: We will carry on from where we left off last time.
Barnaby: I’m making a toy car.
Lizzy: I’m making a toy duck.
Elf A: A toy helicopter!
Elf B: A toy boat!
Jake: I’m making a toy frog!
Elf C: A toy rabbit!
Ben: I’m making a robot!
Holly: Ooh!
The Wise Old Elf: I see Miss Holly does not have a toy.
Holly: That’s OK. I’ll magic one! Zing, zang, zingy-zoy! Magic me a little toy!
(Bird chirps)
The Wise Old Elf:(Gasps)
(Bird continues chirping)
Children: Ooh!
The Wise Old Elf: Miss Holly! Magic is not allowed at Elf School!
Nanny Plum: (In a low voice) Only because Elves can’t do magic!
The Wise Old Elf: Ahem! Elves could do magic if they wanted to, but Elves don’t do magic!
Elf children: And we’re Elves! ( toot trumpet)
(The Wise Old Elf toots trumpet)
(All giggle)
The Wise Old Elf: Miss Holly, then you can work on this toy owl for today.
Holly: Thank you, Wise Old Elf.
(Wand twinkles)
The Wise Old Elf: And I will take this … wand for now so that you learn how to work the proper Elf way without magic.
Holly: Oh!
The Wise Old Elf: Don’t worry. You can have it back at the end of the class.
(Desk creaks)
The Wise Old Elf: Boys and girls, take out your hammers, and remember to tap gently.
(Desks creak)
(Children tap rhythmically and gently)
(Owl smashes)
Holly: Oh, no! I didn’t mean to do that!
(Wand twinkles)
Nanny Plum: Don’t worry, Holly. I’ll fix it. I’ve still got MY magic wand!
Holly: But Nanny, magic isn’t allowed at Elf School!
Nanny Plum: Oh, it’ll be alright. No one will notice! Nikc nack nowl. Mend this owl.
(Bang!)
The Wise Old Elf: What was that loud bang?
Nanny Plum: Uh, I think there’s a bit of a storm brewing outside!
(Children giggle)
The Wise Old Elf: Hm, well. As long as there’s no magic going on.
Nanny Plum: I assure you, Mr Old Elf. Princess Holly is not using magic!
Holly: Naughty Nanny Plum!
Nanny Plum: Oh, shush!
The Wise Old Elf: Now it’s time to paint our toys. Remember, be very careful! A little paint goes a long, long way.
(Paint squelches)
Holly: Oh, bother! Doing things without magic is very hard.
Nanny Plum: Maybe you need just a teeny-tiny bit of magic!
(Wand twinkles)
Holly: Oh, are you sure?
Nanny Plum: Trust me! Ahem! (Chants) Zig, zag, zoy. Paint this toy!
(Bang!)
The Wise Old Elf: Miss Holly! Are you doing magic?
Holly: (Coughs) No, Wise Old Elf! Not me!
Nanny Plum: (Coughs) I think it’s just the storm outside. It must be really close now!
(Children giggle)
The Wise Old Elf: Hm…There’s something funny going on around here.
Holly: Wise Old Elf, what do we do next?
The Wise Old Elf: A good question, Holly! Next we wind the toys up.
(Rhythmic winding)
(Frog ribbets mechanically)
Jake: Look, it works!
(Duck quacks mechanically)
Lizzy: Wow!
(Robot buzzes)
Ben: (Laughs) cool!
(Lever winds)
Holly: Go on, do something!
(Boing! Crash! Bang!)
Holly: Nanny, my owl doesn’t work!
(Wand twinkles)
Nanny Plum: Don’t worry. I’ll just give it a little help.
(Bang! Bang!)
(Holly and Nanny Plum cough)
The Wise Old Elf: Nanny Plum! Have you been doing magic?
Nanny Plum: Just a teeny-tiny little bit to help things along.
The Wise Old Elf: You are a very naughty fairy!
Nanny Plum: Sorry, Wise Old Elf!
(Children giggle)
The Wise Old Elf: We’ll say no more about it. Now, Holly, let’s see what your owl can do.
(Crash! Bang!)
Holly: It doesn’t work at all!
The Wise Old Elf: Mm. Maybe too much magic went into its making.
(Owl rattles)
Ben: I can fix it. I’m very good at mending things!
(Metal clinks) (Hammer taps lightly) (Key winds)
Ben: There. That should do it!
(Key winds) (Owl hoots sweetly)
All: Hooray!
Holly: Thank you, Ben! I did TRY to do it the Elf way!
The Wise Old Elf: Yes, Holly! I know you did.
Holly: But it’s not easy to make toys without using magic.
Ben: It’s easy for us because…
Elf children: We’re elves!
(All toot trumpets then laugh)
(Wand twinkles)
The Wise Old Elf: Now, Holly! Here’s your wand back!
Holly: Thank you.
The Wise Old Elf: And remember, no magic until you have left the classroom.
Holly: Yes, Wise Old Elf.
The Wise Old Elf: And that goes for you too, Nanny Plum!
Nanny Plum: Yes, Wise Old Elf.
(Owl hoots)
(All laugh)
(The end)
