Strategies Good Readers Use To Understand What They Read

1,Good readers ask themselves before they read, "Why am I reading this?" They then establish a clear purpose for reading.
阅读的目的明确。

2,Good readers understand how different text features and language nuances contribute to the meaning. They don't skip over or fail to understand the importance of: titles, sub-titles, bold print, italics, illustrations, captions, graphs,
statistics, charts, formulas, templates, extra spacing, text layout, unusual punctuation or grammar, sensory images, setting, characterization, metaphor, simile, irony, symbol, satire, hyperbole, parody, fable, archetype, prototype and sarcasm.

3,Good readers develop a-personal (effective) method to learn new words.

4,Good readers skim (quickly look over the entire text) and scan (search for key words, phrases) the reading material before, during and after reading.

5,Good readers make connections between themselves, other books/text, and the world around them before, during and after reading.

6,Good readers create movies (with sound, smell, taste, touch) in their mind as they read.

7,Good readers try to figure out or predict what the text will be about and what will happen before, during and after reading.

8,Good readers determine what is important in a text by asking questions about the author's intentions, reflecting on themes and drawing their own conclusions so as to eliminate unimportant details from their memory.

9,Good readers ask themselves questions before, during and after they read. "Is this true?" "What evidence does the author provide?"

10,Good readers infer as they read. They guess/speculate, extrapolate!, draw conclusions, form unique interpretations... and make critical judgments.

11,Good readers can restate clearly and concisely the essence of what they just read. They can filter (determine credible sources, verify sources, eliminate unsubstantiated statements), analyze, clarify, synthesize and recall one or more text sources.
They can condense, determine essential ideas, and retell what they have read either orally or in writing. 

12,Good readers know when they comprehend text and when they don't. They employ a variety of fix -up strategies to repair comprehension when it breaks down. They have a tool box full of ways to solve a reading problem.
 They reread, skip ahead, sound out, use the context and syntax. Without thinking about it, good readers repair their lack of understanding by using the appropriate tool from the six language systems (pragmatic, schematic, semantic, syntactic, lexical, or grapho-phonic).
