At birth, Ella is inadvertently cursed by an imprudent fairy named Lucinda, whobestows on her the “gift” of obedience. Anything anyone tells her todo, Ella must obey. Another girl might have been cowed by this affliction, butnot feisty Ella: “Instead of making me docile, Lucinda’s curse made arebel of me. Or perhaps I was that way naturally.” When her beloved motherdies, leaving her in the care of a mostly absent and avaricious father, andlater, a loathsome stepmother and two treacherous stepsisters, Ella’s life andwell-being seem in grave peril. But her intelligence and saucy nature keep herin good stead as she sets out on a quest for freedom and self-discovery, tryingto track down Lucinda to undo the curse, fending off ogres, befriending elves, and falling in love with a prince along the way. Yes, there is a pumpkin coach,a glass slipper, and a happily ever after, but this is the most remarkable, delightful, and profound version of Cinderella you’ ve ever read.

BOOK 4 Fairest (2007)
Featuring Sarah Naughton
8 hours, 7 minutes
Levine’ s enchanting, intelligent fairy tale, set in a kingdom devoted tosinging, lends itself well to full-cast production; this one features 32voices. Composer Todd Hobin has set Levine’ s lyrics to music; Naughton does aterrific job as maid Aza, the narrator, a demanding role that requiresnear-operatic talents. Homely Aza, abandoned at birth, not only sings like alark, she can throw her voice and mimic others, a skill she calls illusing. Ina chance meeting, the treacherous new queen, whose abrasive voice has a ValleyGirlesque quality, discovers Az’ s talent and blackmails the girl into secretlyproviding her voice for all of the queen’ s public singing. Additionalbackground music augments the many perilous predicaments Aza finds herself in,as well as providing a backdrop to the fairy-tale romance that develops betweenher and Prince Ijori. This is a rare case: the book itself is superb, but theaudio production surpasses it.
