Minibeast Adventure with Jess
Jess helps your little ones discover the amazing creatures on their doorstep
Minibeast Adventure is a series which aims to help children get to know the amazing creatures that live right on their doorstep. Taking viewers on a Minibeast Adventure is presenter Jess French, a quirky, enthusiastic and knowledgeable young zoologist. Jess grew up in a family where her father bred insects and has an in-depth understanding of the importance of the very smallest creatures. Her background led her to zoology and veterinary studies and she’s passionate about sharing this knowledge with the next generation.
Every programme begins with a visit to Jess’s treehouse, where she introduces us to a particular minibeast. From there she sets out on a Minibeast Adventure with children in their local environment to try and find that day’s creature. Jess helps the children interpret what they find and they learn how to handle the minibeasts and care for their environment.
Little ones will get to see all sorts of insects up close in fascinating detail. The show aims to help children develop an understanding of nature and encourage them and their families to get outside and go on their own Minibeast Adventure.
1. Caterpillar
In her treehouse den, Jess looks at caterpillars and waits for a chrysalis to hatch.
2. Ladybird
Jess tries to spot ladybirds and shows how to make a safe and warm place for them to live.
3. Slug
Jess searches for slugs in the garden and looks at how they move and breathe.
4. Beetle
Jess takes a close look at beetles' wings, hard shells and sensitive antennae.
5. Dragonfly
By her pond, Jess looks at dragonflies and the difference between them and damselflies.
6. Worm
Jess shows the children how to make a wormery so that they can watch worms at work.
7. Pond Skater
Jess is down by her pond watching pond skaters.
8. Woodlouse
In her treehouse den Jess has a close look at some woodlice.
9. Bee
In her treehouse den Jess has a section from a beehive and is watching the bees inside it.
10. Fly
In her treehouse den Jess has a close look at flies.
11. Butterfly
Jess meets up with some children and together they search in a meadow for butterflies.
12. Millipede
Jess has a close look at a millipede and shows how it differs from a centipede.
13. Earwig
Jess has a look at some earwigs and shows how to tell if an earwig is male or female.
14. Harvestman
Jess is looking at harvestmen - many people think of them as daddy long legs.
15. Ant
In her treehouse den, Jess looks at her ant colony with its queen and many worker ants
16. Moth
Jess and her friends open up a moth trap to see what Jess has collected overnight.
17. Spider
Jess and her friends find beautiful webs and observe the spiders that made them.
18. Centipede
The children find a centipede and build a cosy centipede corner where it can hide away.
19. Water Boatman
Jess and her friends go pond dipping and manage to find some water boatmen to observe.
20. Snail
Jess makes some special lettuce soup for snails to eat and the children watch them feed.
