Gennifer Choldenko is a Newbery Honor-winning American writer of popular books for children and adolescents. A graduate of Brandeis University, Choldenko majored in literature and creative writing before she went on to work in advertising. Gennifer’s first novel, Notes from a Liar and Her Dog, was published in 2001.


Al Capone Does My Shirts was published three years after that, garnering a Newbery Honor, and “Best Book of the Year” from School Library Journal, Kirkus Reviews, and Publishers Weekly. A sequel, Al Capone Shines My Shoes, followed in 2009, and a third Al Capone novel is planned for 2013. Gennifer’s novels have been translated into 12 languages.

Today I moved to a twelve-acre rock covered with cement, topped with bird turd and surrounded by water. I'm not the only kid who lives here. There's my sister, Natalie, except she doesn't count. The convicts we have are the kind other prisons don't want. I never knew prisons could be picky, but I guess they can. You get to Alcatraz by being the worst of the worst. Unless you're me. About the Author
Gennifer Choldenko was the youngest in a family of four kids, where her nickname was “Snot-Nose.” Her quirky sense of humor made its debut at the dinner table when Gennifer was a very little kid.
