New Concept English was written in 1967 than revised in the early 90s. English is constantly changing and evolving. NCE predates many current technologies. It teaches antiquated phrases, sentence structures, and vocabulary.
It teaches memorization and not thinking. It does not help one to understand English as a language, it only helps to take a test. NCE does not teach how to communicate or put your own thoughts down. It has old and outdated grammar and does not teach modern phrases or sentences.
It does not teach how to speak.
It also teaches using translation method, which in current ESL thinking is the old and inefficient way to teach and learn a language (for many reasons). And since everything is in Chinese, they do not actually understand what it is about. You can not have and English sentence, then it in Chinese, and expect to actually learn how to make the sentence, say the sentence, or understand why the sentence is what it is.
Why do parents like it? Its what they learned. Language is not a fluid thing for them, and they think it worked for them... but they still want to have you teach them and they are unable to communicate. Why does China like it? It is an early book... yes. But 1964 is why. Why 1964? That is when simplified characters really became the standard. NCE comes out and the same time that Chinese are having to relearn their writing style. Since Chinese does not change as much as English, the 2 being closely related is a key reason why it is still in use.
I refuse to teach NCE. I have turned down many well-paying gigs because the parents or adult students wanted to learn it. I tell them it is shit, but they insist it is good and important. There are so many better books out there. I understand that use ESL teachers want extra money by tutoring, but I wish all English teachers refused to take on private gigs that use it, and quit schools that teach it. NCE needs to die its long overdue death.
当然目标是走国内应试 ,在现在孩子英文语感词汇有一定量的时候 ,是不是一定要去学新概念,还是可以专门提一下语法方面,做一些题目,针对性的去补习?
