2- And one day the Elephant went for a walk and he met a Bad Baby. And the Elephant said to the Bad Baby, “Would you like a ride?” And the Bad Baby said, “Yes.”
3- So the Elephant stretched out his trunk, and picked the Bad Baby and put him on his back, and they went rumpeta, rumpeta, rumpeta, all down the road.
4- Very soon they met an ice-cream man. And the Elephant said to the Bad Baby, “Would you like an ice-cream?” And the Bad Baby said, “Yes.” So the Elephant stretched out his trunk, and took an ice-cream for himself and an ice-cream for the Bad Baby, and they went rumpeta, rumpeta, rumpeta, all down the road with the ice-cream man running after.
5- Next they came to a pork butcher’s shop. And the Elephant said to the Bad Baby, “Would you like a pie?” And the Bad Baby said, “Yes.” So the Elephant stretched out his trunk, and took a pie for himself and a pie for the Bad Baby, and they went rumpeta, rumpeta, rumpeta, all down the road with the ice-cream man and the pork butcher both running after.
6- Next they came to a baker’s shop. And the Elephant said to the Bad Baby, “Would you like a bun?” And the Bad Baby said, “Yes.” So the Elephant stretched out his trunk, and took a bun for himself and a bun for the Bad Baby, and they went rumpeta, rumpeta, rumpeta, all down the road with the ice-cream man, and the pork butcher, and the baker all running after.
7- Next they came to a snack bar. And the Elephant said to the Bad Baby, “Would you like some crisps?” And the Bad Baby said, “Yes.” So the Elephant stretched out his trunk, and took some crisps for himself and some crisps for the Bad Baby, and they went rumpeta, rumpeta, rumpeta, all down the road with the ice-cream man, and the pork butcher, and the baker, and the snack bar man all running after.
8- Next they came to a grocer’s shop. And the Elephant said to the Bad Baby, “Would you like a chocolate biscuit?” And the Bad Baby said, “Yes.” So the Elephant stretched out his trunk, and took a chocolate biscuit for himself and a chocolate biscuit for the Bad Baby, and they went rumpeta, rumpeta, rumpeta, all down the road with the ice-cream man, and the pork butcher, and the baker, and the snack bar man, and the grocer all running after.
9- Next they came to a sweet shop. And the Elephant said to the Bad Baby, “Would you like a lollipop?” And the Bad Baby said, “Yes.” So the Elephant stretched out his trunk, and took a lollipop for himself and a lollipop for the Bad Baby, and they went rumpeta, rumpeta, rumpeta, all down the road with the ice-cream man, and the pork butcher, and the baker, and the snack bar man, and the grocer, and the lady from the sweet shop all running after.
10- Next they came to a fruit barrow. And the Elephant said to the Bad Baby, “Would you like an apple?” And the Bad Baby said, “Yes.” So the Elephant stretched out his trunk and took an apple for himself and an apple for the Bad Baby, and they went rumpeta, rumpeta, rumpeta, all down the road with the ice-cream man, and the pork butcher, and the baker, and the snack bar man, and the grocer, and the lady from the sweet shop, and the barrow boy all running after.
11- Then the Elephant said to the Bad Baby, “But you haven’t once said please!” And then he said, “You haven’t ONCE said please!” Then the Elephant sat down suddenly in the middle of the road and the Bad Baby fell off.
12- And the ice-cream man, and the pork butcher, and the baker, and the snack bar man, and the grocer, and the lady from the sweet shop, and the barrow boy all went BUMP into a heap.
13- And the Elephant said, “But he never once said please!” And the ice-cream man, and the pork butcher, and the baker, and the snack bar man, and the grocer, and the lady from the sweet shop, and the barrow boy all picked themselves up and said, “Just fancy that! He never ONCE said please!” And the Bad Baby said, “PLEASE! I want to go home to my Mummy!”
14- So the Elephant stretched out his trunk, and picked the Bad Baby and put him on his back, and they went rumpeta, rumpeta, rumpeta, all down the road, with the ice-cream man, and the pork butcher, and the baker, and the snack bar man, and the grocer, and the lady from the sweet shop, and the barrow boy all running after.
15- When the Bad Baby’s Mummy saw them, she said, “Have you come for tea?” And they all said, “Yes, please!” So they all went in and had tea, and the Bad Baby’s Mummy made pancakes for everybody.
16- Then the Elephant went rumpeta, rumpeta, rumpeta all down the road with the ice-cream man, and the pork butcher, and the baker, and the snack bar man, and the grocer, and the lady from the sweet shop, and the barrow boy all running after. And the Bad Baby went to bed.

这本书虽然出版于1940年，但直到今天都很畅销，很多孩子看的第一本书就是Pat the bunny！
引用一段王民培写的书的介绍，能够对书的内容有个完整了解：

第一页上画着两个小朋友，他们正牵着手走来，就像小哥哥拉着小妹妹。文字说明是：“这是波尔和茱迪，他们会做许多事情，你也能做许多事情。”
第二页上画着小女孩茱迪在抚摸一只小白兔。文字说明是：“茱迪会抚摸小兔子，现在，你也来摸摸小兔子吧！”奇妙之处在于，书上的小兔子只是镂空地画出了小兔子的轮廓，而兔子身上是从夹层中填上真正的白茸茸的兔皮。当我把着小孙子的手去摸小兔子的时候，孩子就感觉到了那种茸茸的皮毛的质感，有了真实的触觉。孩子会嘎嘎地笑，会要求翻来覆去地摸，好有兴趣呀！
第三页上画着小男孩和小女孩用布手帕蒙着脸藏猫猫。文字说明是：“茱迪会和波尔玩藏猫猫，现在，你也和他玩个藏猫猫吧。”有趣的是，书上也画着小男孩举着一块蓝布——一块真正的小蓝布帘，小读者可以把那蓝布帘掀起来，就能看到波尔的脸了，就等于自己也玩上藏猫猫了。我的小孙子把那帘子一掀一合、一掀一合地哈哈笑着。
第四页上画着一丛美丽的花，花真的很香，是因为是在半空的花心洒了一种持久性很强的香水。
第五页上画的是茱迪在照镜子，当然画里真有一个小圆镜。
第六页上画着爸爸抱着小女孩，小女孩好奇地摸着父亲脸上的胡子茬儿。文字说明是：“茱迪在摸爸爸脸上的胡子，现在，你也摸摸爸爸脸上的胡子吧。”有趣的是，画面上爸爸的胡子部分竟然是砂纸做成的，小家伙用手摸上去，真的有摸胡子时的那种感觉。小孙子摸一摸就赶紧把手缩回来，然后又试探着再去摸一摸，特好玩儿。
第七页上画着小女孩坐在地上看小人书。文字说明是：“茱迪会看书了。现在，你也来读读她的书吧。”这一页，是书中之书，上面贴着另一本微型小书，那本小书也有好几页呢，画的是小白兔从早到晚怎样听闹钟起床、练习、吃饭、睡觉等活动，又清晰又生动。小读者照样可以自己翻看那本书中之书。
第八页画面上，是妈妈手拿着一枚戒指，而这枚戒指是镂空的，小男孩正把食指穿过妈妈的戒指。小孙子就把小食指从那孔里穿来穿去，乐此不疲。
第九页上画着两个小朋友向你挥手，文字说明是：“就这些了，波尔和茱迪向你们挥手说再见了，再见！”
