What did dinosaurs eat?

Some dinosaurs ate lizards, turtles, eggs, or early mammals. Some hunted other dinosaurs or scavenged dead animals. Most, however, ate plants (but not grass, which hadn't evolved yet). Rocks that contains dinosaur bones also contain fossil pollen and spores that indicate hundreds to thousands of types of plants existed during the Mesozoic Era. Many of these plants had edible leaves, including evergreen conifers (pine trees, redwoods, and their relatives), ferns, mosses, horsetail rushes, cycads, ginkos, and in the latter part of the dinosaur age flowering (fruiting) plants. Although the exact time of origin for flowering plants is still uncertain, the last of the dinosaurs certainly had fruit available to eat.

What did grass evlove ?

Because of its structural simplicity, you might think that grass evolved a very long time ago, along with the first plants. Interestingly, however, the fossil record shows this is not the case. Grass only shows up in the fossil record about 67 million years ago, in the form of phyoliths (small silica flecks in grass that make it difficult to digest) found in fossilizeddinosaur dung. Recently, it was thought that grass only evolved about 55 million years ago, becoming abundant after the Age of the Dinosaurs, which ended in a mass extinction 65 million years ago, but the phytolith finding refutes this.Land plants in general evolved during the Silurian, about 440 million years ago. These were simple mosses and lichens. All throughout the Mesozoic, dinosaurs consumed various plants, but didn't touch grass until it came into existence at the tail end of the period. If you consider the entire duration of land plants to correspond to an hour, grasses evolved in just the last nine minutes. However, today many ecosystems are dominated by grasslands, which are estimated to cover 20% of the Earth's land area, numerous animals live on grass, and members of the grass family are the most agriculturally and economically important plants in the world.

The Cretaceous Period (144-65 Million Years Ago)

Plant Life The main innovation of the Cretaceous period was the evolution of flowering plants, which spread across the separating continents, along with thick forests and other kinds of dense, matted vegetation; this is also when grass first started to appear on the scene.

Cretaceous Plants
http://www.kids-dinosaurs.com/cretaceous-plants.html

”Flowers and flowering trees and grasses got to be more and more common during the Cretaceous period, helped along by the evolution of bees that carried pollen from one flower to another, and by the end of the Cretaceous most of the plants on earth were flowering ones. In addition to the bees, a lot of other new kinds of insects developed, like ants, grasshoppers, and termites.“
