《伊索寓言》相传为公元前六世纪，被释放的古希腊奴隶伊索所著，搜集有古希腊民间故事，并加入印度、阿拉伯及基督教故事，共三百五十七篇。

伊索（公元前620年--公元前560年），是公元前6世纪的古希腊的一个寓言家，生活在小亚细亚。弗里吉亚人。他与克雷洛夫、拉·封丹和莱辛并称世界四大寓言家。他曾是萨摩斯岛雅德蒙家的奴隶，曾被转卖多次，但因知识渊博，聪颖过人，最后获得自由。自由后，伊索开始环游世界，为人们讲述他的寓言故事，深受古希腊人民的喜爱。公元前5世纪末，“伊索”这个名字已是古希腊人尽皆知的名字了，当时的古希腊寓言都归在他的名下。现在常见的《伊索寓言传》是后人根据拜占廷僧侣普拉努得斯搜集的寓言以及后来陆陆续续发现的古希腊寓言传抄本编订的。

Aesop was reputedly a tongue-tied slave who miraculously received the power of speech; from his legendary storytelling came the collections of prose and verse fables scattered throughout Greek and Roman literature. First published in English by Caxton in 1484, the fables and their morals continue to charm modern readers: who does not know the story of the tortoise and the hare, or the boy who cried wolf? This new translation is the first to represent all the main fable collections in ancient Latin and Greek, arranged according to the fables' contents and themes. It includes 600 fables, many of which come from sources never before translated into English.
