在创作过程中，迈克经常融入自己真实的经历。他在《蝴蝶师》（THE BUTTERFLY LION）一书中就影射了自己在寄宿学校那段不愉快的经历。除了从自身经历取材外，迈克也善于从周遭发生的事情中汲取灵感。他的《健介的王国》（KENSUKE’S KINGDOM）就是以一次真实的船难为灵感写出的。这两部作品与《柑橘与柠檬啊》（PRIVATE PEACEFUL）和《战马》（WAR HORSE）一起,成为迈克自己最满意的四部创作。其中《柑橘与柠檬啊》于2009年引进中国。
迈克迄今为止的作品已有百余部，得奖无数。多部作品曾翻拍成电影、电视剧、舞台剧和歌剧。迈克于2004年出版的小说《文雅的巨人》是由作曲家斯蒂芬·迈克涅夫（Stephen McNeff）与作词家迈克·肯尼（Mike Kenny）共同改编为歌剧，并于2006年在伦敦皇家歌剧院（Royal Opera House）上演。迈克1985年创作的《鲸鱼何时来到》（WHEN THE WHALES CAME）于1989年被改编为电影。《我的朋友瓦特》（MY FRIEND WALTER）与《走出尘埃》（OUT OF THE ASHES）被改编为电视剧。《战马》被改编为舞台剧及广播剧，剧作家李·霍尔（Lee Hall）正准备将《战马》搬上大荧幕。
迈克不仅是一个作家，他还积极投身于公益事业中。“当我是一个教师的时候，我认识到孩子们几乎与周遭的世界没有接触，对他们来说，电视上的就是真实的。我希望他们第一时间亲身体验生活。”正是在这种想法的驱使下，1976年，迈克辞去了教师的职务和她的妻子克莱尔（Clare）共同成立了“城市儿童下农场”计划（Farms For City Children），意在通过让平日生活在城市之中的青少年们在乡村农场中生活工作一星期，来帮助增加他们贫乏的生活经验。这个计划现在拥有三处农场，分别是位于的德文郡（Devon）的内瑟科特农场（Nethercott）,位于威尔士(Wales)的特雷金斯农场（Treginnis）和位于格洛斯特郡（Gloucestershire）的维克农场（Wick）。在过去的30年里，有超过5万名来自各英国各个城镇的儿童参与到了这个活动中。1999年，迈克夫妻凭借他们对青少年事业所作的贡献获得大英帝国成员勋章（Members of the Order of the British Empire），迈克还于2006年凭借对文学所作的贡献获得大英帝国士官勋章（Officer of the Order of the British Empire）。
