From Marissa Burt, author of Storybound, comes a richly imagined middle grade fantasy loosely inspired by the rhymes of Mother Goose. Full of magic and mystery, A Sliver of Stardust is the perfect adventure for fans of A Wrinkle in Time or The Emerald Atlas.
Wren Matthews thought she’d outgrown nursery rhymes a long time ago. But that was before she knew that songs of twinkling little stars and four-and-twenty blackbirds were the key to an ancient, hidden magic.
Wren’s discovery catapults her into a world of buried secrets, strange dreams, and a mountain fortress under an aurora-filled sky. But just as she starts to master her unique abilities, her new world begins to crumble around her . . . and only she can save it.
Editorial Reviews
From School Library Journal
Gr 4–7—Wren and Simon, two homeschooled 11-year-olds vying for the top prize at the Science Olympiad, are brought together by magic (invisible giant birds, shimmering dust, and cryptic nursery rhymes) and invited to join The Fiddlers, a centuries-old organization of stardust-wielding magicians still trying to recover from the actions of a traitorous apprentice named Boggen, who is responsible for much death and destruction in his search for a magical key. They are made apprentices themselves, and taken to the Crooked House to be trained. There they discover that Mother Goose rhymes are more than just childish entertainment, experience friendship and betrayal, and, of course, save the universe. This is mostly Wren's story–she's a pretty normal girl with plenty of smarts and unusual magic, but things do not come easily for her. The rest of the gang, including Jack and Jill (who are not related in this version) are less well defined, and the adults, with rare exceptions, are mere background. There is some violence, including the destruction of an entire flock of birds. An open-ended finale leaves the stage set for further adventures. VERDICT Fine for libraries with a limitless hunger for fantasy.—Mara Alpert, Los Angeles Public Library --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.
Review
“Burt employs highly descriptive world building and plenty of action.” (Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books)
PRAISE FOR STORY’S END: “Hits the ground running. There are a lot of compelling plotlines, and the book ends with an all-out bang.” (ALA Booklist)
PRAISE FOR STORYBOUND: “An appealing fantasy. Strong writing and interesting characters make Una’s journey enjoyable, and the overall result will have readers on the lookout for the planned sequel.” (Publishers Weekly)
“A richly imagined world. Readers will enjoy the mind-bending fun of puzzling together small details.” (ALA Booklist)
“Readers who love fantasy may see an opportunity to snuggle up with a cup of cocoa and unravel the plot, which twists and turns in on itself, with happy surprises.” (Kirkus Reviews)
“With its unique twist (her roommate, for example, is a snooty Snow White), Una’s adventures should charm those who enjoy fairy-tale reboots, and the cliff-hanger ending could ensure demand for a sequel.” (School Library Journal)
From the Inside Flap
I am a gold lock,
I am a gold key.
However high and low you hunt,
You'll never find me.
Wren Matthews outgrew nursery rhymes a long time ago. Little did she know that songs of twinkling little stars and four-and-twenty blackbirds are the key to the ancient magic of stardust - a magic that only a few people can see and use. And Wren is one of them.
Wren has always preferred to stick to herself. But when she is invited to the faraway fortress where an ancient order has long studied and guarded the stardust, she doesn't hesitate to accept.
Soon Wren is swept up in strange dreams, buried secrets, and rumors that an old enemy is plotting his return. As she tries to master her new abilities, Wren only knows one thing for sure. There's magic in the world - and it's waiting for her. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

The rhymes of Mother Goose meet A Wrinkle in Time in this sequel to A Sliver of Stardust, from Marissa Burt, the author of Storybound.
The Land of Nod used to be just a name in a nursery rhyme to Wren. But when she discovered the secret magic of stardust, she learned that some of those rhymes had secrets of their own—and the Land of Nod is real.
A few months ago, the evil Magician Boggen attempted to escape his exile on Nod and return to Earth. Wren stopped him, but Boggen is still out there. To save her world, Wren will travel farther than even she could have dreamed: to the heart of Nod itself, where she must defeat Boggen once and for all.
A fantastic adventure with a captivating world, inventive magic, and a dash of science, A Legend of Starfire is the perfect next read for fans of Madeleine L’Engle, John Stephens’s The Emerald Atlas, or Stefan Bachmann’s The Peculiar.
