When Alice Mistlethwaite is shipped off to boarding school in Scotland it's nothing like she imagines. Run by the mysterious Major, there are no punishments and the students are more likely to be taught about body painting or extreme survival than maths or English!
Then Alice's dad goes missing and she must run away to find him. Can she persuade her new friends to help?
So begins an epic quest across wild Scottish highlands and islands, where friendships will be made and broken, lies will be untangled and the children will face danger and excitement at every turn.
Both hilarious and heartfelt, this is the classic adventure story brought bang up to date, and told in Natasha's inimitable voice.
Review
So much more than a gripping adventure, this is a story that'll make you love your friends and family a little bit more. I stayed up all night reading it! (Emma Carroll, author of Letters from the Lighthouse)
Although it has echoes of other children's books (not only JK Rowling but also Eva Ibbotson and Enid Blyton), this wise and touching novel has originality and a fresh voice. There are melodramatic elements (a theft, villains with guns), but mostly it is about friendship, families, loss and trust, the joy of nature, facing fears and how children should live big lives. (Sunday Times)
Wonderful contemporary storytelling with a classic feel. (Bookseller)
An utter cracker. (Robin Stevens, Author of the Murder Most Unladylike mysteries)
Thrilling adventure. (The Times)
Farrant brings Famous Five-style adventure right up to date. ***** (Librarian's choice Reading Zone)
Farrant is an accomplished writer. (The Telegraph)
Lashings of adventure, the highs and lows of friendship and a good pinch of mystery, this delightful story already feels like a classic. (WRD Magazine)
Classic, glorious and unmissable. (Piers Torday, author of The Last Wild)
