Now he is an asylum seeker from paradise; silence his only protection. Meanwhile Latif Mahmud, someone intimately connected with Saleh’s past, lives quietly alone in his London flat. When Saleh and Latif meet in an English seaside town, a story is unravelled. It is a story of love and betrayal, seduction and possession, and of a people desperately trying to find stability amidst the maelstrom of their times.

阿卜杜勒拉萨克·古尔纳出生于1948年，1960年代移民到了英国。这位作家目前共出版十部小说，其代表作包括《天堂》（1994年）、《荒漠》（2005年）和海边（2001年）等，多次入围布克奖。
作为当今著名的后殖民作家和文学评论家之一，古尔纳结合自身经历，以非洲人的视角书写殖民历史，其作品聚焦于身份认同、社会破碎、种族冲突、性别压迫等主题，获得了国外学界广泛关注。
