《中学生百科英语》-1 Facts&Figures Unit 1-Unit 4

前几天听到坛子里有个小朋友读这本书的其中一课，想起来我也买过这套书。今天翻出来看，还真是不错。我自己看了前半本，也学了不少。估计我们家小朋友的英语水平能看这套书时，这套书该出第三版或者第四版了。

Unit 1 Animals

1.The Kiwi: beak

2.The Camel:  the Bactrian camel of Central Asia has two humps.The Arabian camel has one hump. The camel has long eyelashes.

3.The Polar Bear: the Arctic Circle , the North Pole, There are no polar bears at the South Pole.

4.The Hippopotamus: mammal

5.The Dolphin: they swim together in a school

 

Unit 2 How?Why?

1.Why Do We Yawn? Bears yawn. Camels yawn. Most mammals yawn. yawning is contagious, or catching. yawning makes you more alert.

2.Why Do People Laugh? In India, there are hundreds of laughter clubs. people laugh about 17 times a day.

3.Why Is the Sea Salty? the Dead Sea in the Middle East, the Great Salt Lake in the state of Utah in the United States. They are much saltier than the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean.

4.How Can a Plant Kill? most of these poisons come from petroleum

5.How Do Many Hearing-Impaired People Talk? American Sign Language ( ASL) is very different from British Sign Language

 

Unit 3 Plants

1. The Date Plam:

2. The Water Hyacinth:crop, make fertilizer, maybe it will be possible to make methane gas (CH4) for energy.

3. Rice: Asia Africa and South America, upland rice grows in dry soil, most rice grows in wet soil. make baskets, brooms, rugs, sandals, and roofs for their houses. burn dry rice plants in fires for cooking

4. Oranges: they are in sections, so it is easy to eat them.

5. The Coffee Plant: Brazil, Colombia, Indonesia, Ivory Coast, or Ethiopia. people pick most of the coffee beans by hand. under large trees. the trees protect the coffee plant from the sun

 

Unit 4 Music and Behavior

1. Music and Behavior: the sound of western classical music (Mozart and Bach) makes people feel richer.

2. Blues and Jazz: slaves, the nineteenth century, the American Civil War (1861-1865), South (Louisiana and mississippi), a person who "sings the blues"feels sad. blues songs express sad feelings, guitar, harmonica, piano. some famous blues musicians and singers are Bessie Smith, John Lee Hooker, and B. B. King. Jazz came soon after blues. Some famous jazz musicians are Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, and Wynton marsalis.

3. Rock and Roll: rock and roll came from jazz and the blues during the 1950s. Bill Haley's "Rock Around the Clock". Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly and Chuck Berry. rap or punk,mixtures of rock and roll and talking or other sounds.

4. Country-Western Music: cattle

5. Latin Music and Salsa: speak Spanish or Portuguese. salsa, play cards.
