I. Focus of Teaching
The focus of teaching in this unit is to help freshmen at university understand university life, from the differences between high school and university to the keys to success at college. Students are expected to gain a better idea of university life through talks and monologues.
II. Teaching Notes
In the pre-listening stage, remind students of the high expectations and demands that university teachers usually require of them. Encourage them to put forward their own study strategies. Hints from Background Information should be provided.
In Part A, before listening, ask students to brainstorm about the differences between high school and university.
In Part B, ask students to describe ideal living conditions and design a layout of their imaginary ideal room, and draw a picture of it to show the class.
In Part C, before listening, ask students to name some living habits they have changed since entering university. Encourage students to express a wide range of ideas during the speaking activity, ranging from the habits of smoking and alcohol-drinking to spending money and socializing.
In Additional Activities, advise students that their presentations should not be long, better several minutes, and ensure that each of them has an equal chance to express reasons for their choice.
