Teachers should be paid more
Do you want to be a teacher when you grow up? Do you think that teachers are paid a lot? Well, that was true in the 20th century, but not now.
Teachers are not paid the salary they deserve, only $23 per hour, lower than the average salary, $24 per hour. To be a teacher, you need to have degrees in mathematics, IT, education, English and science. With these degrees, you could easily get another job, like being a librarian, or a writer. Even gardeners and electricians get paid more than teachers.
Most jobs’ salaries rise due to inflation, but teachers’ salaries have not risen fast enough. In the 20th century, the prime minister of New Zealand was paid 3 times the wage of teachers, but now, she is paid 8 times the wage of primary school teachers. This is resulting in many teachers going on strike.
It is worse in Auckland: many teachers are leaving the city to work in other places. My ex-teacher Ms. Miller moved to Hamilton a year ago. The reason for this is that almost all teachers at the same level are paid almost the same salary, while the cost of renting or buying a house in big cities is much higher. That means teachers’ wages in Auckland struggle against the soaring cost of living in Auckland.
All teachers work hard to teach children. If there were no teachers, there would be no lawyers, no scientists, no doctors… that would be a disaster! According to the data, the average teacher works 12 hours extra per week. In my opinion, teachers should be paid a higher salary.
There are more and more university students that don’t want to be teachers anymore. There will not be enough teachers in the future, which will make classes bigger, and that will mean all the students copying off the board, resulting in low-quality education. Then it would be the same as the olden days.
I believe that teachers are overworked and underpaid, so they definitely need a pay rise, especially the teachers in Auckland.
