Looking at words and Letters
1. Ask your child to find and circle two uppercase A's and three lowercase a's.
2. Ask, How many words are in the first line of the poem? How about the last line? Which line has more words?
3. Have your child point to the first line of the poem, then underline the first word and last word. Repeat with the last line.
4. Ask your child to point to the first word in the poem and then to the last word.
Playing with Sounds
1. Say, Let's say words that rhyme with sat. I'll say the first sound; you tell me the word: “b”, “f”, “m”, “p”, “th.” (bat, fat, mat, pat, that)
2. Ask your child why these words belong together: Muffet, tuffet (they rhyme); curd, came(they start the same); Miss,Muffet(they start the same and they are both part of the girl's name).
3. Take turns stretching out words and guessing what they are: sat, and, miss, beside, spider, eating.
Beginning to Read
1. Ask your child to circle the words with one syllable or beat. (Miss, sat, on, a, her, curds, and, whey, came, a, and, sat, down, her, and, Miss)
2. Ask your child to underline the words in the poem with two syllables or beats. (Little, Muffet, tuffet, eating, along, spider, beside, frightened, Muffet, away)
3. Say, Take the “c” off came. Start with “g”. What's the word? (game) Repeat with “bl,” “s,” “t’” and “fl.”
4. Together, choose two or three words from the poem. Add them to your word wall and practice these words daily. Or add them to your child’s word bank (a collection of words on cards, one word per card).
