Amazon.com Review
Clement C. Moore's beloved poem about Santa's arrival on Christmas Eve has been illustrated by hundreds of artists since its first publication in 1823. Two collectors of antique children's books have selected a variety of these charming pictures from Arthur Rackham, Jessie Willcox Smith, Thomas Nast, and other renowned children's illustrators of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Most of the images are from versions of the poem; a few are from antique postcards or magazines. Source notes for all the illustrations are included. Santa is dressed differently by each artist, but he is always "chubby and plump--a right jolly old elf" who brings joy to all good little girls and boys. This attractive edition of The Night Before Christmas will be enjoyed most by collectors of children's books or lovers of things Victorian. Youngsters who are already familiar with the poem will delight in comparing the different old-fashioned Santas and the children of long ago "nestled all snug in their beds." A charming holiday gift to leave under the tree on Christmas Eve for anyone who believes in the magic of Santa Claus. From Publishers Weekly
What Tavares's (Zachary's Ball) monochrome art for this famous poem may lack in seasonal palette, it more than makes up for in authenticity. The artist pays homage to the original text, incorporating the spellings and phrasings of 1823, the year in which the verse first appeared in a Troy, N.Y., newspaper. Stark yet lushly textured pencil drawings, recalling the work of Chris Van Allsburg, capture the mystery, surprise and anticipation of what many children consider the most magical night of the year. The finely wrought portraits and shadowy, snow-covered Victorian setting will enchant. Ages 5-up.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2-A cozy version of the poem in which the creatures that are stirring become the focus of the Christmas Eve activities. Tudor paints interior and exterior scenes of a Vermont farm brimming with wild and domestic life. When a tiny, elflike St. Nick appears, the family's cat and dogs join a couple of barn owls in a celebration with music, presents, and dancing. The man of the house's presence is minimal. This animal romp is pictured in glowing detailed watercolors that are placed on each page like miniatures set against starlit night backgrounds. This version will have particular appeal for one-on-one sharing in homes where pets have a special place.-A.C.

From Booklist
Handsome prints with thick black outlines and strong colors, coupled with a deceptively simple design, make this presentation of the classic poem stand out from other beautifully illustrated editions. Young children, especially, will be attracted by the bold, bright images, featuring Santa dressed in cherry red, the wintry night in shades of blue and white, and warm gold interiors. The formal layout features black, elegant type on a white background, on most spreads facing a single framed image. Occasional full-page spreads are striking, especially one showing a close-up of Santa holding the reins, with hooves and the back end of one reindeer just visible, giving the impression that Santa’s sleigh is about to fly off the page. The traditional text might make for difficult reading for those unfamiliar with the poem; the old-fashioned phrasing may even trip up adults reading out loud. (Phrases such as “As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly” don’t exactly roll off the tongue.) But this will be savored, read, and reread at holiday time. Grades K-2. --Diane Foote --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Book Description
A classical look at old Saint Nick
The poem "The Night Before Christmas" has become so much a part of Christmas that it’s hard to imagine the holiday without it. Originally published as an "Account of a Visit from St. Nicholas," it appeared in 1823 in the newspaper, the Troy Sentinel. It has since been reprinted hundreds of times, acted out on stage, and read over the radio and on film and CD. The author, CLEMENT CLARKE MOORE, is said to have written the poem for his children on Christmas Eve, 1822. Our modern image of Santa Claus as a bearded, plump, jolly figure can be traced back to Moore’s famous description of St. Nick: "He had a broad face, and a little round belly, that shook when he laughed, like a bowl full of jelly." --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
