Don’t touch anything in the hospital. The germs are everywhere and will make you worse! You do as I say!

You have a cough.

You’ve been coughing for two days.

You must have caught a germ.

Germs make you sick.

Germs do not always make you sick.

Many germs are not harmful.

But some of them do.

Germs are tiny living things.

They are far too small to see with your eyes alone.

There are many kinds of germs,

but the two that usually make you sick are bacteria and viruses.

Let’s see a doctor.

The doctors will try to find out which germs are making you sick.

Germs are all around.

Germs, such as bacteria and viruses, are found everywhere!

They are in the air you breathe, in the food you eat, in the water you drink, and on everything you touch! Like this wall!

When somebody sneezes, germs fly out.

You breathe the air. Some of their germs may get into your lungs.

When you take a sip of someone else’s drink.

Their germs are on the straw.

A few of their germs may get into your mouth.

They are even on your skin and in your body.

Your body keeps out harmful germs most of the time.

Your skin blocks the germs.

Germs can’t get in if there are no cuts or scratches on your skin.

Germs can stay in your body and make you sick.

The inside of your mouth and throat is always wet.

Germs often get stuck there.

They don’t go any further.

Look inside a nose.

It is lined with tiny hairs in the nose.

The hairs catch many of the germs you breathe in.

They push them back out.

Our body has its own way to beat back the germs.

(Viruses)

Viruses bring you colds and the flu, measles, mumps, and chicken box, and lots of other illnesses.

Doctors do not yet have drugs to cure diseases caused by viruses.

But they can give you shots to prevent some of these diseases.
