1819年生于纽约，出身名门望族。后因家道中落，15岁的他放弃学业，打工以补贴家用。
1837年乘船前往英国。1841年成为捕鲸船水手，开始漫长的海上漂泊。在枯燥的航行、与食人族同住、被放逐、军舰服役等之后，于1844年登岸。这段坎坷却丰富的经历对他产生了深远的影响。
1845年开始创作小说。
1851年《白鲸》出版，直到70年后才得到广泛重视。
1891年9月，依然穷困潦倒，病逝于纽约。
至今，《白鲸》被视为美国文学史上最伟大的小说之一。
