Introduce the Letter Aa 5–10 minutes
Sing the alphabet song with the child. Point to the highlighted letter on the song
page, and tell the child that the letter for the day is Aa.
Show the child the letter page and ask: What letter is this? Find the letter a in
the word. Have the child use a finger to trace the letters on the page, following
the arrows.
Sit next to the child and read the alphabet chant as you point to each word. Ask the
child to point to all of the words in the chant that start with Aa.
Have the child sort the picture/word cards by putting all of the cards that begin with
the letter a in one stack and all of the cards that do not begin with the letter a in
another stack.
Practice the Letter 8–10 minutes
Ask the child to practice writing the letter with his/her finger, tracing in the same
direction as the arrows on the letter page, either in the air, or in the palm of
his/her hand.
Have the child practice writing the letters on the letter writing practice sheets.
Provide extra sheets if he/she needs more practice.
Read the Alphabet Book 3–5 minutes
Give the child a copy of Alphabet Book A. Ask the child to point to the front,
back, top, and bottom of the book. Ask the child to name the letter on the front
of the book.
Open the book to the first page. Ask: What is the picture? What letter does it
start with? Repeat with the next three pages.
Starting with page 5, read the sentences slowly. Ask the child to read along with
you, and to point to each word as it is read. Reread these sentences with the child.
Then ask him/her to read the sentences independently.
Play the Alphabet Game 5–10 minutes
Have the child lay the game cards face down over the corresponding picture on the
game board. If the child places the pictures correctly, he/she will make a picture of
an anteater.

Have the child take the letter writing practice sheets and the alphabet book home
for practice.
