2015 Michael L. Printz Award for Teen Literature

The Michael L. Printz Award is an American Library Association literary award that annually recognizes
the "best book written for teens, based entirely on its literary merit". It is sponsored by Booklist
magazine; administered by the ALA's young-adult division, the Young Adult Library Services Association
(YALSA); and named for the Topeka, Kansas, school librarian Mike Printz, a long-time active member of
YALSA.

Up to four worthy runners-up may be designated Honor Books and three or four have been named every year.

Jandy Nelson won the 16th Printz Award (2015) for I'll Give You the Sun, published by Dial Books for
Young Readers. It was announced during the ALA midwinter meeting, February 2, 2015, when four Honor Books were also named (below).

The New York Times Bestselling story of first love, family, loss, and betrayal for fans of John Green,
David Levithan, and Rainbow Rowell

Jude and her twin brother, Noah, are incredibly close. At thirteen, isolated Noah draws constantly and is
falling in love with the charismatic boy next door, while daredevil Jude cliff-dives and wears red-red
lipstick and does the talking for both of them. But three years later, Jude and Noah are barely speaking.
Something has happened to wreck the twins in different and dramatic ways . . . until Jude meets a cocky,
broken, beautiful boy, as well as someone else—an even more unpredictable new force in her life. The
early years are Noah's story to tell. The later years are Jude's. What the twins don't realize is that
they each have only half the story, and if they could just find their way back to one another, they’d
have a chance to remake their world.

This radiant novel from the acclaimed, award-winning author of The Sky Is Everywhere will leave you
breathless and teary and laughing—often all at once.

It's 1993, and Generation X pulses to the beat of Kurt Cobain and the grunge movement. Sixteen-year-old
Maggie Lynch is uprooted from big-city Chicago to a windswept town on the Irish Sea. Surviving on care
packages of Spin magazine and Twizzlers from her rocker uncle Kevin, she wonders if she'll ever find her
place in this new world. When first love and sudden death simultaneously strike, a naive but determined
Maggie embarks on a forbidden pilgrimage that will take her to a seedy part of Dublin and on to a life-
altering night in Rome to fulfill a dying wish. Through it all, Maggie discovers an untapped inner
strength to do the most difficult but rewarding thing of all, live.

The Carnival at Bray is an evocative ode to the Smells Like Teen Spirit Generation and a heartfelt
exploration of tragedy, first love, and the transformative power of music. The book won the 2014 Helen
Sheehan YA Book Prize.

A 2015 Michael L. Printz Honor Book
Winner of the 2014 Boston Globe-Horn Book Award for Fiction

“Grasshopper Jungle is a rollicking tale that is simultaneously creepy and hilarious. It’s propulsive
plot would be delightful enough on its own, but Smith’s ability to blend teenage drama into a bug
invasion is a literary joy to behold… Smith may have intended this novel for young adults, but his
technique reminds me of Kurt Vonnegut’s in “Slaughterhouse Five,” in the best sense.” —New York
Times Book Review

In the small town of Ealing, Iowa, Austin and his best friend, Robby, have accidentally unleashed an
unstoppable army. An army of horny, hungry, six-foot-tall praying mantises that only want to do two
things.

This is the truth. This is history.
It’s the end of the world. And nobody knows anything about it.
You know what I mean.
Funny, intense, complex, and brave, Grasshopper Jungle brilliantly weaves together everything from
testicle-dissolving genetically modified corn to the struggles of recession-era, small-town America in
this groundbreaking coming-of-age stunner.

A 2015 Michael L. Printz Honor Book

Every summer, Rose goes with her mom and dad to a lake house in Awago Beach. It's their getaway, their
refuge. Rosie's friend Windy is always there, too, like the little sister she never had. But this summer
is different. Rose's mom and dad won't stop fighting, and when Rose and Windy seek a distraction from the
drama, they find themselves with a whole new set of problems. One of the local teens - just a couple of
years older than Rose and Windy - is caught up in something bad... Something life threatening.

It's a summer of secrets, and sorrow, and growing up, and it's a good thing Rose and Windy have each
other.

This One Summer is a tremendously exciting new teen graphic novel from two creators with true literary
clout. Cousins Mariko and Jillian Tamaki, the team behind Skim, have collaborated on this gorgeous,
heartbreaking, and ultimately hopeful story about a girl on the cusp of childhood - a story of renewal
and revelation.
