The Lost Egg
Somewhere, hidden amongst thorny brambles, is a little kingdom of elves and fairies.
Everyone who lives here is very, very small.
BEN: I’m Ben Elf.(TRUMPETS)(RUFF, RUFF!)
HOLLY: And I’m Princess Holly. (JINGLES) (RUFF!)
Come on, let’s play!
BEN: Wait for us!
Ben and Holly’s little kingdom.
Today’s adventure starts in the little forest.
“The lost egg”
(CHIRP) (BIRD CHIRPS)
(WHOOSHING WIND)
(BIRD CHIRPS)
(BOTH GIGGLE)
HOLLY: Ben, let’s play catch.
BEN: But, Holly, we haven’t got a ball.
HOLLY: That’s easy. I can magic one up. Abracadabra, abracadoo. Magic a ball and make it blue! Hmm. Maybe not blue, red. It’s a bit small. Shall I make it bigger?
BEN: It’s fine. Come on, let’s play.
HOLLY: Hee, hee! To you, Ben.
BEN: Ha, ha, ha! To you, Gaston.
Gaston: Woof, woof!
HOLLY: (Giggles) To you, Ben. Oh, sorry.
BEN: Ohh! Holly, have you magiced the ball into this?
HOLLY: No, that’s not our ball. Look! (Whistles)
BEN: So what’s this, then?
HOLLY: It looks like an egg.
BEN: I wonder where it came from.
HOLLY: There’s no tree here. Maybe it flew.
BEN: Eggs don’t fly, Holly!
HOLLY: Magic eggs might fly.
BEN: Hmm. Maybe it’s a dragon’s egg.
HOLLY: Hmm. Gaston, do you know what kind of egg it is?
Gaston: Arf, arf!
BEN: I think that means no.
HOLLY: Oh… I know! We can ask Nanny Plum.
BEN: Good idea!
Nanny Plum: # Dad a dum dad a dee da…# Dad a dum dad a dee da…# Dad a dum dad a dee da…
HOLLY: Nanny Plum, quick!
NANNY PLUM: Oh, goodness me! What is it?
HOLLY: We found a magic egg.
BEN: Or a dragon’s egg.
HOLLY: Come on, we’ll show you.
WISE OLD ELF: Most interesting! An egg. Hmm.
HOLLY: Here’s the magic egg, Nanny.
NANNY PLUM: That’s not a magic egg.
BEN: Is it a dragon’s egg?
NANNY PLUM: No, it’s some sort of bird’s egg.
HOLLY: Hello, what sort of bird’s egg are you?
WISE OLD ELF: A blackbird.
HOLLY: It’s a talking egg.
WISE OLD ELF: No, it’s me, the Wise Old Elf.
NANNY PLUM: Oh, hello.
WISE OLD ELF: Good day, Mistress Plum. As I was saying, it is a blackbird’s egg. And there’s a baby chick inside.
BEN: How do you know?
WISE OLD ELF: You can hear it tapping. Listen.
(TAPS)
HOLLY: Ooh! Exciting! Nanny, can we look after it?
NANNY PLUM: You must never collect the eggs of wild birds. The place for an egg is with their mummy bird.
WISE OLD ELF: Wise words, Mistress Plum.
BEN: But the mummy bird’s not here.
NANNY PLUM: Then we must find her.
Gaston: Arf, arf, arf!
BEN: I know, Gaston can follow the egg’s trial and find the mummy.
(SNIFFS)
HOLLY: Clever Gaston! (GIGGLES)
BEN: Gaston’s good at smelling things.
(HOWLS)
(BOTH: OH!)
NANNY PLUM: I don’t think the Ladybird can follow the trial through water.
BEN: Now we can’t find the egg’s mummy.
HOLLY: So what can we do, Nanny?
NANNY PLUM: If the mummy were here, she would build a nest and sit on the egg to keep it warm.
HOLLY: Hee, hee. Please, can I sit on it?
NANNY PLUM: Your bottom is too small.
WISE OLD ELF: We need a bigger bottom.
KING THISTLE: Hello, everybody.
NANNY PLUM: Hello, King Thistle.
HOLLY: Daddy, can you help us?
KING THISTLE: Help you with what?
NANNY PLUM: Your Majesty, if you could sit on this egg until we build a nest, that would be most kind.
KING THISTLE: Very well.
HOLLY: Daddy looks a bit silly.
(BOTH GIGGLE)
KING THISTLE: I don’t look silly, do I?
HOLLY: No, Daddy.
(BOTH GIGGLE)
KING THISTLE: I say, this is jolly uncomfortable. You won’t be long, will you?
WISE OLD ELF: We’ll be as quick as we can. We just need to build a nest.
HOLLY: I know, elves can pick up sticks, Fairies can pick up soft things.
BEN: OK.
WISE OLD ELF: We’ll collect these sticks.
NANNY PLUM: We’ll collect thistledown.
HOLLY: Thistledown is very soft. There.
NANNY PLUM: And now, the magic words.
Sticks, moss and thistledown, make me a nest all cosy and round. Lovely.
KING THISTLE: Can I get off now?
NANNY PLUM: Of course, your majesty.
(CRACK)
BEN: Look, there’s a crack.
HOLLY: Oh, Daddy! You’ve broken the egg! (SFX:CRACK)
WISE OLD ELF: No, the egg is cracking on its own.
(CRACK)
BEN: The egg is hatching.
ALL: Ooh!
(BIRD CHIRPS)
HOLLY: Oh, it’s a little chick!
(BIRD CHIRPS)
ALL: Aw…
NANNY PLUM: Good. Now the mummy will hear chick call and come to collect it. And I can get back to my work.
(BIRD CHIRPS)
HOLLY: Look, the chick’s following Nanny Plum.
WISE OLD ELF: Usually, the first thing the chick sees is its mummy.
BEN: And this chick saw Nanny first.
HOLLY: So it thinks Nanny is its mummy.
(ALL LAUGH)
(BIRD CHIRPS)
NANNY PLUM: I’m not a mummy bird.
WISE OLD ELF: The chick is hungry. Mummy bird must give it food.
NANNY PLUM: I haven’t got any food.
HOLLY: What do birds eat?
WISE OLD ELF: Worms and insects.
BEN: Uh. Gaston is an insect.
HOLLY: Gaston, maybe you should stand back a bit.
Gaston: Arf, arf!
(BIRD CHIRPS)
WISE OLD ELF: We need to find some worms.
BEN: How?
WISE OLD ELF: With worm charming. Like this.
(THUMP, THUMP, THUMP!)
The worms think it is raining and come up to breathe.
ALL: Ooh…
(ALL THUMP)
BEN: Look, a worm! It got away!
ALL: Ooh!
WISE OLD ELF: Come on, everyone! Try again.
(ALL THUMP)
HOLLY: There is another one.
ALL: Ooh!
KING THISTLE: (PUFFS) I give up. They’re too hard to catch.
(BIRD CHIRPS)
HOLLY: The baby bird is very hungry.
BEN: We really need to find its mummy.
WISE OLD ELF: Usually, the mummy bird comes when her baby calls.
KING THISTLE: But it’s not chirping louder enough. (BIRD CHIRPS)
KING THISTLE: Nanny, do a spell to make the chick chirp louder.
NANNY PLUM: Of course. Zick zag zig, make it big.
BEN: Oh, no, Nanny. I think you’ve got the spell wrong.
HOLLY: The chick is getting bigger.
NANNY PLUM: I haven’t got the spell wrong. I made it bigger to make it louder.
(BIRD CHIRPS)
ALL: Ooh.
NANNY PLUM: Don’t worry. The spell won’t last long.
KING THISTLE: How long, Nanny Plum?
NANNY PLUM: Uh, It could last a minute, or a week, or…
(BIRD CHIRPS)
(CHIRP)
(BIRD CHIRPS)
BEN: The spell is wearing off.
HOLLY: And the mummy bird is here.
ALL: Hurray!
(BIRD CHIRPS)
BEN: What’s it saying?
NANNY PLUM: Chick says ‘Thank you very much, bye-bye.’
ALL: Bye-bye.
(TUMMY RUMBLE)
HOLLY: Nanny, I’m hungry.
NANNY PLUM: Me too.
KING THISTLE: And me.
BEN: (THUMPS) How about some juicy worms?
ALL: Ew!
(CHILDREN LAUGH)
(THE END)
