Chapter 3 the Hunting

The next morning, the three woke up to find that they had passed out on a heap of wooden planks. At first, they were surprised at this sudden appearance of the wooden planks and the equally surprising thing about the disappearance of the hut. Then the memory of the hurricane, the blow down, and the blankness of the life ahead struck them all at once. If that could be described as a punch or a hit, one would say it was too hard. Martha actually feinted. The two others quickly caught her and after pouring cold sea water on her head, she was revived. Then, the three discussed what was to happen next. They were in the hot of an argument when a chorus of growling noises issued from who knew where.

It was when the noise came for a few times that they realized the noise was coming from their empty stomachs. It was then that they really noticed that they were starving. So they had another argument and came out with an even hungrier stomach and an idea that they should hunt for wild animals. So, in order not to lose anything, they raped up their stuff in three table clothes and each carried one bag rolling and heaving anything that can’t fit.

They each had a pocket knife and Samantha had this idea that if they tie the knife to a long stick they could make a weapon with a long reach. They ran around looking for food, and as luck would had it, they saw a flock of deer about ten minutes after they were roaming around. Martha, the most athletic of the three, climbed up a tree with a long branch that extended over the deer group, and jumped off the branch with hardly a sound, and plunged her spear right into the side of the deer, as the animal stumbled about, Samantha sank the “spear” as they call it, into the deer’s neck while at the same time, Christina threw the spear deep into the left side of the deer’s chest, right into the heart.

The deer dropped dead instantly, and they were pleased to find that the deer was a rather plump one and that it would provide enough meat for the next few days. But when they looked around, they realized that they were in completely new territory, and when they tried the “turn around” technique, they found that with all the hunting, they were completely turned around all over the place. With the deer in a kind of coop, to keep away some other scavengers, the three had the third argument of the day, which ended in trying to find a nice clearing where they could make some shelter. They roamed about for fifteen minutes until they found the perfect spot.

It was a large clearing the size of a basketball court, with a circle of trees with branches that reached over the clearing while interlocking with each other, forming a large hood, or canopy, which stretches over the clearing, keeping out the glare of the sun in the summer, and the cold drafts and snow in the winter. All of them had read a book about camping in the forest, and decided to make a kind of tent made of cloth propped up by sticks.

The three each made a tent, and decided to get breakfast ready. They each picked half a leg, so there were one and a half legs to eat. Samantha cut out the legs and the other two went to collect firewood. When they returned, they were surprised to see that Samantha had made a kind of stove of rock, with a big flat rock at the top. They lit a

fire at the bottom, and placed the legs on the top. They had to trust luck on this meal for they had not the slightest idea when the leg would be roast. But they smelled the wonderful smell a few minutes later and knew the meat would not be long now. Samantha wanted to take precautions, so the meat ended up a little bit burnt. Martha grumbled and complained, but Christina sat meekly down on her tent, and ate her share of the meat.
