Prologue
It all started at Halloween.
That night, my friend Kat and I went trick or treating on the main street. Time went by, and it was already 9:30. Kat wanted to go home, but I would like to go to a few more houses and get some chocolate bars. And, I know a short cut though the graveyard.
"Come on, please, please, please!" I begged her. And not waiting for her answer. I grabbed her hand and dragged her toward the graveyard.
Kat sighed and went after me. We wondered off in the graveyard. The fog was so thick. I couldn't even see within 20 feet. Ten minutes later, Kat gasped and pointed at a tombstone, a funny look on her face.
"What?" I asked her, "Saw your own grave?"
"No, I saw that tombstone about five
minutes ago. I think we've been going around in a circle!" She said
wearily.
I was dumbfounded.
"OMG! I'm sooo sorry Kat! I thought I knew the way! Which, apparently I don't. I didn't mean to go around in circles! I didn't mean to drag you to the graveyard, I didn't mean —"
"It's Ok, just calm down. Look, there's another path, we can go and try that one." Kat cut me short.
So we went on, about 20 minutes later, a house rose in front of us. Yes, it literally rose from the ground and it was just hanging there. More a castle than a house, but there was a tablet dangling above the gate – Vampy Hotel. Weird.
Not thinking with my head, I began to go for the door. But Kat grabbed my sleeve.
"What's wrong?" I asked her.
"Don't you think it's weird? A house rising in the graveyard like that? I don't know about going in." She said hesitantly.
"Then what do you think we're supposed to do, wandering around the graveyard, and starving to death? I'm sorry, I'm going in." Looking at her surprised face, I realized I was too mean for a girl like her. I It was me that dragged her to the graveyard in the first place. "Kat, I'm--" I tried to tell her I was sorry, but what had been said could not be taken back.
She cut me short again, "Save your apologies, I'm going home!" Then she ran away.
Looking at her back, I thought about the rumors about the graveyard. And a horrible thought came to me: What if I'm not only losing her as a friend, but I'm losing her as a person? What if she dies out here?
How could I have thought that? I slapped my forehead and ran after her. “Kat, come back! It’s dangerous walking alone out here. Let’s go home together!”
No answer.
“Kat! Where are you?”
Everything was like a blur to me after Kat ran away. I remembered that I somehow opened the door and got in the house,. I was wondering in some kind of guest room. There was a grand-father clock, a big sofa, and then there's nothing, I was looking at the clock when I heard a thump and the floor creaked, something snarled. I was fully awoke then, and I was scared. I soft footed up the hall, coming toward the sound, and found a slightly opened door. I peeked inside, it was dark, but I saw two shadowy figures, one hitting the other. I was startled, I gasped, and the hitting person stopped hitting, turned and glared at me. He had blood red eyes. He started toward the door. I was frozen, just standing there, watching him walking toward me. Then I was pulled back by a strong force, and fell into another room.
I turned and hit whoever it was that had pulled me, hard on the face. It was a boy, about one or two years older than me, maybe 13 or 14. He had spicy and fluffy red hair, handsome features and red eyes. They bore in to me. I whimpered, and crawled under a desk in the room. Then I stared at him, except the place I slapped him.
The boy looked amused, "You hit me!" Like he couldn't believe a girl would hit him. Then he asked "What are you doing at the hotel? You're not our kind."
"Your kind?" I asked, confused.
He said nothing, then the strangest thing happened, the red fingerprints on his face slowly began to disappear.
Then the truth dawned on me.
"You're a… You’re a, a vamp…" It seemed I couldn't say the word.
"Vampire. Cold-one."
"Vampires. Vampires?" I looked at the boy like he was mad.
"Yeah, I can drink your blood if I want to." He said half heartily as I whimpered. "But that, I don't."
"Gee, thanks. What's going on in there?" I cocked my head at the direction of the room I just peeked in.
"New born. Gone mad." He said carelessly. "So how did you get here, usually no one can go in and out easily through the hotel."
"I don't know, I was crossing the graveyard with my friend, and the house, or as you said, the hotel rose in front of us. And I just opened the door and walked in." I told him the truth.
There are still amusement in his blood red eyes, "And where is your little friend, may I ask?"
"We got into a fight, and she ran off, saying she's going home. I wish she's ok."
"Nah, I bet she is dead." He said.
"And that would be my fault." We felt in silence.
After a while, I broke the silence. And asked, "So, now I know your little secret, will you kill me?"
"I told you, I don't kill human when it isn't necessary." He said exasperated.
I was relieved. "All right. Since you're not going to kill me, then let's be friends." And I gave him a grin.
He was speechless, I think. Then, with a shake of his hand, he said with amusement, "I'm James."
"Mackenzie. Mackenzie Carter."
That night he told me a lot about his life. How his life was before, how had he turned into a vampire. Everything.
Just when he was telling me a story. The old grand-father clock in the guest room chimed. I counted, one, two… seven, eight… ten, eleven, twelve.
"God, it's already twelve! I have to go, I'm so sorry." I said.
"No, don't be." He gave me the very rare smile of his. "I don't like what I'm going to do, but do you trust me enough to let me do this?"
I don't know why, but I nodded firmly and said "Yes."
I remember the last thing I saw was his blood red eyes, his soft voice saying go to sleep, and then, I saw nothing.
