CBeebies, which is aimed at babies to six-year-olds and is often watched by families together, will hope that the
new show will lend some variation to its programming: the channel was criticised on Mumsnet earlier this year for
gangsta slang in Rastamouse. Baby Jake, by contrast, has not a hint of urban tension. Its opening scene, a direct
and deliberate homage to Teletubbies, has the baby's face filling the screen.
"It's just beautiful," said Benbow. "I think we are looking at a programme that can move (after its current
screening) into the (most popular) bedtime hour, where established favourites including Waybuloo also are played.
Being admitted to this hour is only offered to the most loved and soothing of programmes, and small children
resent most changes to schedules, unless the new shows are loved."
