Choosing Books for 0 to 2 Year Olds
Begin sharing books with babies as soon as you can safely hold the baby and the book at the same time. Although babies will not understand the words, your voice and your cuddling are exactly what s/he needs. Holding a baby while reading creates a loving bond. Your familiar voice has a calming effect and helps the baby associate reading with pleasure. It is one of the most important things you can do to help a child learn language.
    • Let babies explore soft cloth, vinyl or board books. Babies like to play with books, chewing on them, throwing them, and playing with them like a toy. If your baby just wants to play with a board book, that’s fine. Try reading it together later.
    • If your baby likes to be held, snuggle up and read a book together. If your baby likes to lie on a blanket, lie beside your baby and look at a book together.
    • Point to objects in the book and name them.
    • Ask babies questions about what's happening on the page, such as, "Where is the duck?" Pause, point and answer for baby, "Oh, look, there's the duck!" (You’re adding to your baby’s vocabulary and showing him the “conversation game” of back and forth.)
    • Change your voice as you read aloud and make the sounds of the animals baby sees.
    • Respond to babies’ interests. Imitate their responses.
    • Improvise! You don't need to read the words as they appear in the book. You can just talk about the pictures.
    • Relax and have fun! It's okay if the baby crawls or moves away - she will still hear and benefit from your voice.
    • Read every day, even if it’s just for a few minutes. Try to find some time every day to share books with your baby. For example, when you’re cooking, read the recipe. Keep a book in the diaper bag, too.
    What Babies Like in Books
    • Board books with photos of babies (Margaret Miller Baby Face books)
    • Books with bold, clear pictures of familiar items in baby's world
    • Black & White books (Tina Hoban)
    • Books with rhythm and repetition
    • Books with animal sounds
    • Lullaby books
    • Peek-a-Boo books
    • Touch and Feel Books (texture books)
    • Flap books
    What Toddlers like in Books
    • Small books to fit small hands
    • Books with simple rhymes
    • Books with familiar items (shoes, toys, pets)
    • Books with familiar routines (bedtime, bath time, meals)
    • Flap books
    • Books with few words or repeating words - books s/he can learn by heart
    • Goodnight books for bedtime

Choose Books for Your Baby and Toddler                                                Start your baby’s library off right.
Every parent knows that reading with children is crucial for their development, but how do you know which books are right for your child? Below are some age-based tips for selecting your baby's first books. As she grows, you can tailor your choices to match her interests. Aim to read at least a book a day.

For Newborns: Seeing Things in Black and White
If you are just starting your baby's bookshelf, it's important to remember that the act of reading is just as meaningful as whatever books you choose. Certain visuals and text will hold the attention of newborns:
    • High-Contrast Images
Newborns' eyesight is a work in progress. In fact, they see best from a distance of approximately one foot, so simple, bold images hold the most appeal.
    • Rhyming Text
Just by listening to your voice, newborns gain invaluable language lessons. When you read a book with basic rhymes, your infant will relish the soothing, reliable rhythm.
For Older Babies: Never Bored With Boards
By the second half of the first year, babies begin to participate actively in the reading process — first by chewing, later by pointing and babbling. Choose books to satisfy a seemingly endless amount of curiosity. Expose your child to the world through bright pictures of interesting objects.
    • Board Books
These short, simple books are made of laminated cardboard pages. They should be sturdy, with rounded edges, because your baby most likely will chew them, pull them, and toss them.
    • Activity Books
Play peek-a-boo. Search for hidden surprises. Touch something soft and furry. From pop-up to lift-the-flap to bath and more, activity books encourage exploration.
    For Toddlers: Picture This
Even though toddlers are frequently on the move, they need books as much as babies do. Resist the urge to quiz your child on letters, colors, or numbers. Instead, choose picture books that introduce basic themes and invite conversation.
    • Picture Books
From stunning Caldecott Medal winners to dime-store classics, picture books provide more elaborate plots and illustrations than board books do. Subjects range from ABCs to animals, feelings to favorite characters.
    • Bedtime Books
You have probably already added a few bedtime books to your library, but toddlers need these books more than ever. Reading a book with mom or dad before bed can serve as a great wind-down for active toddlers.

    这套估计比an i can read更加低幼简单一些。
