To glean means to gather tidbits left behind by others. To glean also means to take in someting bit by bit, such as information or knowledge.
eg: After the harvest, birds and animals quickly glean the leftovers.

In a story, the hints the author gives help you glean details about charaters and plot. This is especially true in a \"whodunnit\". Read a mystery story. Write a review of it. Describe some of the hints or cluse that helped you glean key information about the plot or characters.
