在绘本Olivia里有一段,是Olivia站在美术馆一张画前,这句话是这样的:
But there is one painting Olivia just doesn't get."I could do that in about five minutes." she says to her mother.
这儿的get可以联系上下文来理解.
看画展的时候, 不仅仅是看画是否漂亮, 更多地是理解画所表达的含义.
Olivia先是看见一幅自己喜欢的画, 然后再盯了很长时间, 有一句What could she be thinking? 说明她确实在思考.
But there is one painting Olivia just doesn't get.
这句画的配图是一幅很抽象的画, 有点信手涂鸦的味道, 也难怪Olivia想不明白了.
所以get在这儿相当于catch或者understand
After下面是个时钟, 圆点在竖线右边表示"在...之后", 圆点在竖线左边则表示"在...之前"
breakfast: 早餐, 这个图片孩子应该比较容易看懂.
he: 他, 当然之文中的Peter了
called: 打电话
to: 给...
his friend: 他的朋友
from: 从.../来自...
across: 在...对面
the hall: hall在这儿指过道, 走廊, 即Peter与他朋友家之间的走廊或者过道.
his friend from across the hall: 我们可以理解为他的朋友住在peter家的对门儿/对面,
they went out together: 这个很容易理解, 他们一起到屋外,
the deep, deep snow: 说明雪下得很大, 积雪很厚, 就象绘本前面说的那样his feet sank into the snow, 脚踩上去会深深地陷进雪地里.
went out into = went out (出去, 出去玩儿)+ went into(进入). 先到屋外, 然后再进入到..., 比如说:
1. go out into the rain: 冲进雨中
2. go out into the square: 来到广场上(详见安徒生童话的the snow queen - http://wlxt.whut.edu.cn/nenglish/read.asp?id=1657)
因此, 这儿they went out together into the deep, deep snow即为"他们冲进厚厚的雪地里(玩儿)".
连在一起:
After breakfast, he called to his friend from across the hall, and they went out together into the deep, deep snow.
早餐后, 他打电话给住在对门儿的朋友, 然后俩人一起冲进厚厚的雪地里(玩儿).
