Looking at words and Letters
1. Ask your child how many words are in the first line of the poem. How about the second line?
2. Ask your child to find and circle the upper case T's. Repeat with the lowercase t's.
3. Show your child the word little in the title. Say, Look for this word in the poem and underline it. How many can you find?
Playing with Sounds
1. Say, Let's clap the syllables or beats as we read the poem.
2. Say, How many syllables or beats do you hear in these words? this(1), little(2), piggy(2), market(2)
3. Say, I'll say a word. You stretch it out:
Market(mmm…ar…ket)
Home(hh…oh…m)
Little(l…itt…ell)
Way(w…a…y)
Beginning to Read
1. Ask your child to find the words with two syllables, or beats, and to draw boxes around them. (little, piggy, market)
2. Ask your child to circle the words that are places.
3. Ask your child to underline the words in the poem with long vowel sounds. (stayed, home, roast, beef, cried, wee, way)
4. Ask your child to find these words and put a box around them: this, piggy, market, way.
5. Together, choose two or three words from the poem. Add them to your word wall and practice these words daily. Or add them to your child's word bank (a collection of words on cards, one word per card).
