知名美国原住民诗人作家薛曼.亚历斯日前以《战舞》(War Dances)一书赢得价值一万五千美元的 PEN/福克纳小说奖。《战舞》是本短篇小说集,主要是描述关於面临改变边缘的一般人。从一个故事中知名小说家的父亲选择「自然印第安式死亡」用以远离酒精及糖尿病的纠缠,以及一个小男孩帮当地报纸写讣闻的故事。福克纳小说奖评审之一的加州桂冠诗人艾尔.杨(Al Young)认为:这是「一本集喧闹欢乐与悲喜交加的书。

薛曼.亚历斯(Sherman Alexie)(1966-)
美国著名原住民作家、诗人及导演。多数作品都以其原住民生活经验为主题。其中以《一个印第安少年的超真实日记》(The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian)最为人知的排行榜畅销青少年自传小说。并以此书获得2007年青少年文学类的国家图书奖。
PEN/福克纳文学奖
又称为国际笔会/福克纳文学奖,由美国国家图书奖得主Mary Lee Settle於1980年创立此文学奖基金会。创立宗旨在於设立一个可以鼓励文学小说的奖项,由作家组成评审以免去商业利益的问题,并以诺贝尔得主福克纳及国际笔会为名。这个奖於1981年首次在维吉尼亚大学举办。1983年华盛顿特区的福勒吉莎士比亚图书馆提供此文学奖基金会运作办公的房子,之後的福克纳奖都在此图书馆运作及宣布每年得主。1989开始驻校作家计画。
