余国藩（Anthony C. Yu），美国芝加哥大学巴克人文学讲座教授，并为该校唯一由神学院、比较文学系、英文系、东亚系及社会思想委员近四十年，现为该校巴克人文学讲座荣退教授。余国藩也是台湾中央研究院及美国国家人文科学的院士，并荣任中央研究院中国文哲研究所通信研究员。余国藩向以英译《西游记》（Journey to the West，四册）饮誉学界，在《重读石头记》及各类论文之外，他另有《重访巴拿撒斯山》（Parnassus Revisited： Modern Critical Essays on the Epic Tradition）及《信仰的语形学》（Morphologies of Faith： Essays in Religion and Culture in Honor of Nathan A. Scott， Jr.）、《余国藩西游记论集》、《重读石头记：里的情欲与虚构》、《从历史与文本的角度看中国的政教问题》等著作及若干论文。




余国藩以精确翻译和深入研究，将《西游记》《红楼梦》等古典名著介绍到西方，让西方对中国文化有更深层的了解。
余国藩1938年生于香港，父亲余伯泉毕业于英国剑桥大学。余国藩从小使用中、英两种语言，并随祖父习中国传统诗词，
童年便熟读《西游记》，扎下中西文学良好基础。


余国藩18岁赴美留学，获芝加哥大学宗教与文学双博士。台湾“中央研究院”文哲所研究员李奭学认为，这段经历让余国藩得以融合宗教与文学，从宗教角度看文学、以文学思维研究宗教。


1983年，余国藩发表四巨册英译《西游记》，这是西方世界首部《西游记》全套英译本，轰动一时。


李奭学指出，余国藩为西方提供《西游记》精确的翻译和完整注释，让西方得以进入深邃的中国哲学世界。
迄今西方多次将《西游记》搬上舞台，皆根据余版《西游记》。2000年，余国藩获选美国艺术与科学院院士。


余国藩深具批判性思考，总是不断挑战、颠覆自己，晚年常说“过去的文章皆可作废”，2005年自芝加哥大学退休后，他仍致力于《西游记》译注本的修订。




Overview: Anthony C. Yu’s translation of The Journey to the West, initially published in 1983, introduced English-speaking audiences to the classic Chinese novel in its entirety for the first time. Written in the sixteenth century, The Journey to the West tells the story of the fourteen-year pilgrimage of the monk Xuanzang, one of China’s most famous religious heroes, and his three supernatural disciples, in search of Buddhist scriptures. Throughout his journey, Xuanzang fights demons who wish to eat him, communes with spirits, and traverses a land riddled with a multitude of obstacles, both real and fantastical. An adventure rich with danger and excitement, this seminal work of the Chinese literary canonis by turns allegory, satire, and fantasy.

With over a hundred chapters written in both prose and poetry, The Journey to the West has always been a complicated and difficult text to render in English while preserving the lyricism of its language and the content of its plot. But Yu has successfully taken on the task, and in this new edition he has made his translations even more accurate and accessible. The explanatory notes are updated and augmented, and Yu has added new material to his introduction, based on his original research as well as on the newest literary criticism and scholarship on Chinese religious traditions. He has also modernized the transliterations included in each volume, using the now-standard Hanyu Pinyin romanization system. Perhaps most important, Yu has made changes to the translation itself in order to make it as precise as possible.

One of the great works of Chinese literature, The Journey to the West is not only invaluable to scholars of Eastern religion and literature, but, in Yu’s elegant rendering, also a delight for any reader.

About the Author
Timothy Richard traveled to China in 1868 as a Baptist missionary. When other missionaries were attempting to stamp out the popular local tales of gods and heroes such as "Journey to the West," Richard championed them for the universal messages of spiritual challenge and growth they contain.
