Now that Laura is 12 years old, she realizes that everything about her mother is totally embarrassing. Like the way she yodels at the top of her lungs while she works (okay, she calls it singing). And plays really old music so loud the neighbors can hear (can’t she listen to normal music?). And walks around in clay-covered pajamas (yes, she is a sculptor, but still . . . ).
But things are about to get much, much worse. Laura has noticed that her mother is getting a little bit, well, fat. Then one night over dinner (at a restaurant, since she almost burned down the house trying to cook), her mother announces that she’s going to have a baby. Now all the neighbors, including the gorgeous boy Laura has a crush on, will know her parents have been doing it. Maybe even in the house! There must be some way Laura can change her mother before her own life is completely, utterly ruined!

"She embarrasses me more than should be allowed," says the 12-year-old narrator of this chirpy, occasionally cloying novel. "She" is Laura's impulsive mother, a model turned sculptor who makes up words to songs and belts them out for neighbors to hear as she works in her studio. Perplexed that her parent has gone "from cool to geek" seemingly overnight, Laura begins yet another of her beloved lists: "Things to change about MY MOTHER." The list quickly grows as her mother almost burns the house down trying to toast bread and then announces that she is pregnant. Laura is mortified: "Pretty soon everyone at church and in the neighborhood will know that she and Dad were active. You'd think there would be a law about people as old as they are doing... well, you know." Many middle-grade girls will nod in recognition as Laura describes her mother's (and a few of her father's) gaffes, but the heroine's grumbling is not enough to sustain the novel. Ages 8-12.

Grades 6-8--For only child Laura Stephan, everything about her mother is an embarrassment-her loud singing while she sculpts (dressed in pajamas), the "old-timey music" she listens to (the Beatles), her inability to cook, and, most embarrassing of all, her pregnancy. The 12-year-old knows her parents always wanted more children, but now everyone will know they have been "doing it," a fact she cannot contemplate-aren't they a little old? This amusing novel follows events in Laura's life and her up-and-down relationship with her mother in the months before the baby's birth. Williams brings a gentle and humorous touch to the age-old issues of adolescence. Readers will sympathize with the protagonist but at the same time celebrate the closeness that returns between her and her mother with the birth of Laura's sister. She is still embarrassed by her mother sometimes, but what 12-year-old isn't? Those who like Phyllis Reynolds Naylor's "Alice" books (Atheneum) will enjoy this one.
