Ant MacPherson writes notes in her journal to her real mom and tells people at school that she's adopted. But when a concerned teacher sees the truth about Ant and her lies, it seems that Ant may be in for a big change. A School Library Journal Best Book of the Year.

For Antonia MacPherson, lying is a way of life. It's what works best when you are a weed in a family of roses. No matter what she does, her mother thinks she's wrong. Her older sister, Your Highness Elizabeth, (as Ant calls her) says Ant's best friend, Harrison, stinks, and her younger sister, Katherine the Great, takes notes on Ant's bad behavior to report back to their mother. The only family member to whom Ant admits to being related is Pistachio, her dog. A clever, resourceful and very funny liar, Ant sticks to her own moral code that gives Pistachio and Harrison precedence over all other living creatures. But when a concerned teacher sees the truth behind Ant's humor and lies, it seems Ant and her mother may be in for a showdown.

From AudioFile
Perfect pitch! As in music, in audiobook narration it is much to be desired. And Ariadne Meyers possesses it here. She delivers the first-person narration of the gloomy, garrulous, gutsy Ant (Antonia) McPhereson as it must be read--with a sneer and a heavy dollop of (at times, well-deserved) self-pity. Certain she must have been adopted, Ant struggles to find love and acceptance beyond her relationship with her aging dog, Pistachio, and her unkempt best friend, Harrison. Meyers's impeccable character voicings of the spectacular cast of characters in this first novel will have listeners longing for an uninterrupted afternoon of listening. She brings them all to life: the too sweet and supercilious sisters, Your Highness Elizabeth and Katherine the Great; Ant's long suffering dad and testy mother; her earnest art teacher, Just Carol; and the cantankerous assistant principal. This one's a gem! T.B. Winner of AudioFile Earphones Award. ? AudioFile 2001, Portland, Maine-- Copyright ? AudioFile, Portland, Maine

Living in a family with two perfect sisters and parents who just don't get her, Ant MacPherson finds it easier to lie. After all, the only one who appreciates her is her dog, Pistachio. But when a concerned teacher sees the truth behind Ant's lies, it seems as though she might be in for a change . . .

Editorial Reviews
From Publishers Weekly
The confident and youthful sounding Meyers is a solid choice as Antonia "Ant" McPherson, an embittered, smart-mouthed 12-year-old girl who hides her pain behind a constantly growing web of bold-faced lies. Ant, the middle McPherson child, is a challenge, nothing like her agreeable, perfect sisters "Your Highness Elizabeth" and "Katherine the Great." As such, Ant's exasperated parents treat her differently. The result is a sense of alienation so strong that Ant takes comfort in the fantasy that she is adopted and that her real parents will soon show up and take her to her real home. While she's waiting, she relates only to her best friend Harrison, a budding artist, and her beloved, aging dog Pistachio, instead of wasting her time, or the truth about her feelings, on "people who don't understand." But Ant and Harrison's young new art teacher at school, "Just Carol," sees beyond Ant's lies and reaches out to the fragile girl beneath the bravado. Carol's efforts help Ant and her family begin to work things out. Meyers nails Ant's blend of pain and posturing but is less successful taking on the supporting roles, which are exaggerated and not nearly as convincing. Ages 10-14.

From School Library Journal
Gr 6-8-This funny, touching story of 12-year-old Antonia MacPherson heralds the arrival of a fresh new voice in literature for young people. Ant has an unenviable position in her family, falling between two perfect sisters, Katherine the Great and Your Highness Elizabeth. She has a penchant for getting into trouble and driving her bewildered parents crazy. She copes by pretending that she is adopted and by lying. While she is starved for affirmation and aches for attention, her defensiveness and lack of trust often leave her misunderstood and sad. Then an interested art teacher takes her under her wing and insists on honesty and the truth. She introduces Ant and her friend Harrison to volunteering at the zoo, where the girl's lying gets her into some dangerous situations. In the novel's resolution, Ant and her mother finally talk, and they acknowledge that they share the blame for their difficulties. Her mother admits that she prefers the sisters who are less puzzling and less apt to be in trouble. In the end, Ant realizes that her mother loves her, that this is her real family. Choldenko has a wonderfully witty way with words. Her first-person narrative is humorous, tongue-in-cheek, and as irreverent as her independent heroine. For any kid who is a middle child, for kids who have trouble getting along with their parents, for kids who are sure that their parents prefer their siblings, this book will bring delight and understanding.-Connie Tyrrell Burns, Mahoney Middle School, South Portland, ME

From Booklist
Gr. 5-8. Ant, short for Antonia, is keenly aware that her mother finds her deeply annoying and uncomfortable to be around. She is so different from her sisters, "Her Highness Elizabeth" and Katy, that she becomes convinced that she's adopted. The saving graces in her life are her Chihuahua, Pistachio, her friend Harrison (with whom she swaps her great grades for his terrible ones), and a teacher, who goes by Carol ("Just Carol," as Ant always calls her). Just Carol gets work in a zoo for Harrison and Ant, but when Ant smuggles Pistachio into the zoo, endangering herself and the animals, she almost loses Just Carol's support. Choldenko catches the prickliness of adolescence, making Ant fearful and vulnerable as well as a sharp observer, particularly of adult frailties. As Ant eventually realizes, although Mother prefers the reflection of herself that she sees in her other two daughters, Ant is just as clearly her mother's offspring. Funny, moving, and completely believable, this is a fine first novel. Susan Dove Lempke
