The Mysterious assassinationof Detective Zhen
Recently, the TVshow “Mingxingdazhentan” is becoming more and more popular. I decided to seefor myself on how “interesting” it is, indeed, I was attracted to it the minuteI start watching it. I had always been a fan of detective riddles, andconsidering my experience on reading Sherlock Holmes, I suppose this TV showwould be my cup of tea. However, I have to admit the show is a little creepyand scary, but not that scary as I had expected.
The first case waswhen an old man and two of his grandsons named Sa and Pu came to a hotel called“XiaoYun” big hotel. The minute they entered, two doormen came, one namedWhite, the other Rong. Zhen said, “Thisyoung lady looks so familiar,” he then turned to White and said again, “Why areyou wearing red socks when you are wearing green pants?” After an overlyembarrassing meeting, they led the three guests to meet the co-manager of thehotel He. Oh hearing the strange request of detective Zhen who demanded to liveon negative first floor, He asked his little brother who is the manager of thehotel Liu to deal with the problem. Liu was puzzled at first, but at lastagreed. Liu also warned the three guests that there are strange sounds duringthe evenings, so there will be a lockdown from 0:00 to 6:00 in the morning. To make sure that theguests sleep well, the managers gave them some ear plugs to block off thesound. Just as the doormen were about to lead the three guests to their rooms,the big boss of the hotel, Yun, stopped them. He took a close look at Zhen, heimmediately asked in disbelief; “Why are you here?!” Zhen calmly replied back, “Havewe met before?” Yun immediately backed off and muttered, “Sorry, I must havemistaken you for someone else,” then he awkwardly left the scene. Zhen cackled witha smile, and then they were led away by the two doormen.
The clock strikesat 0:00, and the lockdown starts. After everybody returned to their rooms, theysuddenly heard a mysterious song coming, “Little rabbit little rabbit; bringyour candy to me; come here quickly; I’m waiting for you…” or, in Chinese：“小兔子乖乖，把糖儿拿来，快点过来，我在等你……”Itcertainly sounds super creepy.
In the morning,when the lockdown is over, everybody is still sleeping soundly in their beds.At 7:00, He and Liu went to Zhen’s room, they knocked on the door. But nobodyanswered. The pushed the door open, and to their horror, they found the deadbody of Zhen. They screamed out loud for the others to come. When everybodyarrived, they were shocked, especially Sa and Pu, seeing their grandfather’sdead body right in front of their own eyes. Now the case is on.

After gatheringall the evidence, they all started the first round of searching for evidence.They all took a phone with them to record the evidence.
After searching,they all gathered in a room where they began to put all the pieces of evidencetogether.
In Zhang’s roomthey found a box with the note “Why?” on it. When they opened it, a sailor’suniform was put inside a transparent plastic bag, while another sailor’suniform was put on the outside but still in the box. The one inside the bag hadblood marks on it and it was clear that the sign on the shirt had been cut off,including the name of the owner. The other sailor’s uniform was the exact sameas the one in the bag, it only had a tag on it. Zhang’s name was written on it.During the search, they also found a box, in it was Zhang’s phone. It finallybecame clear that it was Zhang’s dream of becoming a sailor. However, due topoor eyesight, he was rejected. So he fooled his older brother Liu that he hadbeen a sailor his whole life. To live on his own, he needed money. So he fakedsome pictures of exotic fish and sent them to his brother. He told his brotherthe price and Liu bought it without thinking twice. With the money, Zhang wasable to lure some girls into his possession. He dumped them all in the end. Oneof them called HuaHua was so attracted to the handsome appearance of Zhang,that she gave birth to a baby. This is also Zhang’s baby. After Liu knew all ofthis, he was furious. He could forgive the fact that Zhang was a scumbag. Butif he was scumbag enough to include his own brother in it, then it was too muchto bear. So Liu started to seek revenge.
On the first floorin Yun’s private office, Rong found his dead body. Everybody was shocked tohere the death of their big boss. Rong explained that there was blood on thehead of Yun, and also blood on the edge of the table. It seemed like the causeof death was a bang on the table. But was it really that simple? On talkingabout the death of Yun, let’s head back to the topic of Zhen. By closerinspecting the cause of death for Zhen, they found eight marks on the back. AsZhen’s grandson Pu recalled, a couple of years ago Zhen was harmed and hurt bya peculiar animal, and it caused the same injury. He even offered to show thereport from the hospital. However, something wasn’t right. It was said to bethe cause of an animal called Eight Clawed Rabbit. However, when Zhen was inhospital, he only had seven marks on his back. Which means that although thecreature’s name was called Eight Clawed Rabbit, it indeed only had seven claws.Which means that the murderer in Zhen’s case was trying to make it seem likeZhen was attacked by the animal again. But they didn’t know that the creatureonly had seven claws. In addition to all of this, only one particular cut inthe middle of the eight was about 3-4 inches deep. And perhaps only this onecut could cause death. But searching around the dead body lead nowhere, becausethey couldn’t find any object with blood, or in short, find the lethal weaponfor this case. Now, back to Yun’s case. Rong claimed that she found a digitalcamera on the table. However, it was missing a card that had the recordings init.
Just at thispoint, He said that he had the card. While he was searching in Zhang’s room, hefound the card along with the sailor’s uniform. When they plugged the card backin the camera, they found the video footage of Liu pushing Yun to the ground.At this point, Yun hit his head on the edge of the table and passed out. “Butwhy were you wearing the same uniform as Zhang’s.” Liu had to explain thereason, he admitted that he wanted to shift the blame to Zhang. In fact Liufound out that Zhang was cheating on him. With grief and rage, he thought thathis brother had gone through enough. He decided to wear the same uniform asZhang. After he killed Yun, he found that his uniform had blood on it. He cutoff the tag that had his name written on it. Liu knew his little brother well,Zhang would always drink in the evenings. At that particular night, Zhang dranka little too much and fell asleep on the sofa. Liu changed Zhang’s sailor’suniform and let him wear the uniform he had worn minutes ago. He then threwZhang’s uniform away.
Now White stood upto present his evidence. White found another camera at the private room of Yun.It shot at a different angle. In it, when Liu pushed Yun, he lay on the floorfor about five minutes. Then he woke up and sat slowly on a sofa. Liu wasshocked as this means Yun hadn’t been killed by him. He gave Yun some tea, andjust as Yun finished drinking, he lay down on the floor dead. He admitted thathe did pour poison into the tea. But He never thought that the poison wouldreact so quickly to Yun’s body. He thought that it wasn’t the poison in the teathat killed Yun. Next, White said that he went into Liu’s room and found a babyin it. On the baby there was a tag saying, “HuaHua’s baby is crying”. Onhearing this, Liu immediately said, “Listen up, don’t you think that the name ‘HuaHua’sounds familiar?” Everybody nodded because this was the girl that gave birth toZhang’s baby. Liu claimed that Zhang doesn’t spend his days in the hotel verymuch and he likes to wander about. HuaHua can’t find Zhang anywhere. HuaHuafound Liu and gave Liu the baby. On seeing his niece, Liu had no option. It washis brother’s baby after all, so he had to keep it. Liu preyed every day forZhang’s return. When Zhang finally returned, he immediately admitted that itwas his baby. He asked another amount of money from his brother Liu to findHuaHua. At that point, Rong gasped saying, “Zhang really is a scumbag!”
Then, everybodywent back to look for evidence. They first went into White’s room and found apicture of White throwing a bottle. In it there are lots of chemicals that arevisible to the naked eye. Then they found a type of medicine called “Superior white crystal sugar”. They also found a report.It says that Yun has a type of disease, which means that he can’t have anythingwith superior white crystal sugar, or special sugar. If Yun had been givenspecial sugar, it would take about 1 hour to have an affect. If he was givensuperior white crystal sugar, it would only take 1 minute to have an affect. Itseems that White put the sugar in the tea He gave Yun. White wanted to shiftthe blame to He. But He didn’t understand why. He had been good to his littlebrother White ever since they were kids. He always looked after White like anangel. But White said that he wanted to get out of He’s care, he didn’t want tobe controlled anymore. White claimed that He had been too hard on him. Eversince they were kids, He had already limited White’s food intake. He also toldWhite what to do at what time, making White look like a bird in a cage. Inorder to get out of the cage, he wanted to shift the blame to his older brotherHe. He confessed that he was really strict with White. He claimed that Whitehad a really good appearance, so he wanted his little brother to stay that way.He secretly changed all of White’s milk tea, juice, ice-cream into the tea hepersonally made. He also bought White comfortable pants to wear. He evenarranged a meeting for White to see a beautiful girl. But White was not at allinterested. In White’s room, Liu found another picture of himself and Rong’scommunication on the internet. It seems that Rong likes the kind of guy whosays “Welcome!” all the time and who never has secrets with her. In fact, shewas talking about White. White also likes Rong very much; he wanted to betogether with Rong. But Rong refused, not because she didn’t like White. Butbecause she thinks it is not time yet. He thinks that White’s actions were toomuch. He also admitted that he might have gone too far with the caring, butbetraying him like that was way too much. Now it’s time to come clean with thecase. In Rong’s room, they found some medicine saying superior white crystalsugar. Rong claimed that she wanted to poison Yun. She gave him the medicine at9:20p.m. He said that he gave Yun the medicine at 10:00, there Yun died. At10:10, Liu came to check on Yun, and was sure that he was really dead thattime. This means that Rong’s medicine hadn’t worked by the time Yun had died. However,this time, Sa spoke up, “What if the murderer lied?” because in this game, onlythe murderer could tell lies. “What if Rong was the murderer, but she gave thesugar to Yun at 9:00p.m. This means, Rong could have higher chances of lying.White’s time is completely controlled by He, because it is He that is giving Yunthe medicine, this lowers the possibility of White being the actual murderer.”
Now, back to thecase of Zhen. Sa and Pu said that in order to let in fresh air, they openedtheir doors at around 6:50p.m. At that point, he saw Rong and Zhang headingtowards Zhen’s room. At 7:00p.m., Pu checked the clock; he then saw He and Liuheading towards Zhen’s room. According to Rong, she and Zhang both received anote saying to meet Zhen at 6:55p.m. At the same time He and Liu received anote saying to meet Zhen at 7:00p.m. This means the only person that hasn’t receiveda note is White. White said that he had been out of the hotel to deal with somepersonal things. Rong and Zhang claimed that when they knocked at Zhen’s doorat 6:55p.m., Zhen said that he wanted to rest and sleep and told them to comeback later. Rong said that this was very suspicious, because it is veryunlikely that somebody would invite them to meet them at an exact time, butthen reject the person to come into the room. However, if the words were reallyspoken by Zhen, this means that at 6:55p.m. Zhen was alive. This means, if Zhenwas alive at that point, the only person that could have murdered him would beWhite, because Sa and Pu saw Rong and Zhang heading back from Zhen’s room, andHe and Liu heading towards Zhen’s room at 6:55p.m. to 7:00p.m. Suddenly, Saspoke up, he remembered that when he and Pu sent their grandfather to his ownroom, they heard him say the exact words as Rong and Zhang heard. This meansthat somebody could have recorded the voice and then played it. Then, theyfound a picture of White standing in front of many bush trees. Behind this,they found something that looks kind of like a secret door that leads to asecret path. So they went to investigate the case. They soon found the bushtrees that White was standing in front of. It was indeed a secret path. Theywent through the secret path and soon found themselves right across Sa and Pu’sroom. Which means that this pathway could 100% avoid being seen by Sa and Pu.This makes the time of the murder even more hard to guess. Now White has thebiggest possibility. But White thinks that there must be other possibilities.He suggests that they go to look at Zhen’s room again. When they first got toZhen’s room, they found that it was very clean. White said that there might besome other door or something leading to another dimension. White and He touchedthe walls outside of Zhen’s room. White suddenly shouted, “The wall is empty!”everybody gasped as they saw white push the wall with minimal effort. Thismeans that there must be a switch that triggers the wall to move. They pushedthe door again and they saw the door move. They all got outside. Everybody wasamazed to see another door of the exact same design; size and logo appear infront of their own eyes. They opened the door; inside it was an even cleanerroom. Inside there was no body, this means that they have entered a new room.They started to search evidence. While searching, Liu found another secretpath. He pushed the mirror and it turned out to be another secret path, everybodywent into the secret path, but it wasn’t the one they entered just now. It wasa completely new path because the path was filled with vines and bushes, whilstthe other one they entered earlier was filled with cloth and curtains. Theywent through the path and found themselves in the middle of the hallway,surrounded by Rong, He’s rooms. They now knew that there are two paths. Duringthe tour, Zhang found a goat’s horn in the second path, it had blood on it.This means that the goat’s horn must be the lethal weapon in the case. The hornis just thick enough to cause the really deep wound in Zhen’s back. This means,that whoever knows the second path must be the murderer, because the lethalweapon is in the second path. This lowers the possibility of White because heonly knew the first path.
Now there are acouple of possibilities. White says that he wanted to meet Zhen in personduring the night, so he took the first path and went to Zhen’s room. However,he found that the room was empty, and nobody was there. This was the dimensionthat they entered after they triggered the switch. He then heard footsteps ofRong and Zhang at 6:55p.m. White claimed that when he moved the visitor’ssuitcases down to their rooms, he accidentally hit the record button on hisphone. It recorded the voice of Zhen saying, “I want to sleep, please don’tbother me,” When he heard Rong and Zhang’s footsteps, he panicked and playedthe recording. When White heard Rong and Zhang leave, he went out of the doorand went back to his room through the first secret path. This all makes senseif White’s time line was correct, this means that White hasn’t lied about histime line. This lowers White’s possibility even more. At this point, Sa pointedout that whoever goes the second path is the murderer. Also, whoever slippedthe note into everybody’s doors must be the murderer, this way they can buy himor herself some time because they can control their time lines. Now there areseveral possibilities.
If Zhang was themurderer, then he leaves his room at around 6:55, then he and Rong both wentthe normal way to Zhen’s room. During this time, when they got to Zhen’s room,the room had only the recording in it. As White said, the room had no body;this means that the door was the new dimension that they had discoveredearlier. When they returned, Zhang and Rong met He and Liu on the way. SinceZhang was the murderer, and He and Liu found the body, he would have to run allthe way through the second path and change the door, this would be too risky.
If He was themurderer, he could wait at the end of the second path. When Rong and Zhang leftZhen’s room, and White came out as well, He could change the door and then rushback the other way to meet Rong and Zhang and Liu on the other side.
If Liu was themurderer, then he would have to run an even longer distance. Because Liu metHe, Rong and Zhang in front of He’s room, he would have to rush back to hisroom, then walk out of his room again. It is really difficult to complete thistask in such a short amount of time.
White only knewthe first path, so he couldn’t have used the lethal weapon in the case.
If Rong was themurderer, she would have to murder Zhen before they went to Zhen’s room,otherwise there would be much of a struggle. She would first move the door soas to show the dimensional door. When she met He and Liu on the way, and asZhang vanished around the corner, she would immediately run through the secondpath and change the door, just in a nick of time.
Now it’s time tovote.
In Yun’s case,Rong had the bigger possibility of lying, because she could obviously move hertime line forward. In Zhen’s case, He and Rong have the possibility of completingthe task of murdering Zhen, and change the door just before He and Liu came.
Now it is time toannounce the final results.

Both murders wereaccomplished by Rong. However, during the search, everybody did miss somecrucial evidence. For Yun’s case, it is the screen shot in Rong’s phone of thetime of the murder. It turned out Rong did lie about her time, she in fact gaveYun the medicine at 9:00p.m. In Zhen’s case, she indeed used the goat’s horn tomurder Zhen. So now, the case is closed.
