After Napoleon's defeat, the French aristocracy tried to reassert its power in a government known as the Restoration. Venal and corrupt, the Restoration fell in 1830. But when the rich and powerful he so admires align against him, his downfall becomes unavoidable.

本名马利-亨利·贝尔，生于法国格勒诺布尔一个律师家庭。7岁丧母，13岁进入格勒诺布尔中央学校。17岁，随法军远征意大利，期间与当地一名女孩产生一段浪漫而离奇的恋情。
19岁，他厌倦了军旅生涯，辞职返回巴黎。23岁重返军队，因战功卓著，获得拿破仑的表彰。29岁，作为拿破仑的信使，随军远征俄国，目睹了莫斯科的惊天大火和法军的一败涂地，开始怀疑自己对拿破仑的狂热。
