【美】欧・亨利（O.Henry） (1862—1910)
美国短篇小说之父，其作品因包罗人间万象且饱含细腻的温情，被评论家誉为“20世纪普通人的心灵之书”。
1862年9月，欧・亨利生于美国北卡罗莱纳州，曾当过银行出纳、地图绘图员、药剂师等。1902年他移居纽约并开始专职写作，其间连续创作381篇短篇小说。他的作品多以20世纪初生活在纽约市的形形色色的普通人——警察、艺术家、股票债券人、服务员、医生等的市井生活为蓝本，以漫画般的幽默笔触勾勒出他们的悲喜日常，读起来让人回味深思，笑中带泪。
1918年，美国艺术科学协会设立了欧・亨利纪念奖，用以奖励世界上极为杰出的短篇故事写作者。
