Audiobook of the Year
The Chopin Manuscript: A Serial Thriller, by Various Authors (Jeffery Deaver, Lee Child, Joseph Finder, Lisa Scottoline, David Hewson, and more)
Narrated by Alfred Molina
(Audible, Inc.)

Former war crimes investigator Harold Middleton possesses a previously unknown score by Frederic Chopin. But he is unaware that locked within its handwritten notes lies a secret that now threatens the lives of thousands of Americans. As he races from Poland to America to uncover the mystery of the manuscript, Middleton will be accused of murder, pursued by federal agents, and targeted by assassins. But the greatest threat will come from a shadowy figure out of his past: the man known only as Faust.

The Chopin Manuscript is a unique collaboration by 15 of the world's greatest thriller writers. Jeffery Deaver conceived the characters and set the plot in motion; the other authors each wrote a chapter in turn. Deaver then completed what he started, bringing The Chopin Manuscript to its explosive conclusion.

During Word War II, a family finds life turned upside down when the government opens a Japanese internment camp in their small Colorado town. After a young girl is murdered, all eyes (and suspicions) turn to the newcomers, the interlopers, the strangers.
This is her town as Rennie Stroud has never seen it before. She has just turned thirteen and, until this time, life has pretty much been what her father told her it should be: predictable and fair. But now the winds of change are coming and, with them, a shift in her perspective. And Rennie will discover secrets that can destroy even the most sacred things.

This is the story of Skip Sands, a spy-in-training engaged in Psychological Operations against the Vietcong, and the disasters that befall him thanks to his famous uncle, a war hero known in intelligence circles simply as the Colonel. This is also the story of the Houston brothers, Bill and James, young men who drift out of the Arizona desert into a war in which the line between disinformation and delusion has blurred away. Judas Coyne was a collector of the bizarre, the uncanny, and the grotesque: a cookbook for cannibals, a used hangman's noose, a snuff film. Many of these objects were gifts from the fans who made his metal band legendary-but not all. When his personal assistant told him there was a ghost for sale on the Internet, Jude knew he had to have it for his private collection. He should have thought twice. Jude has spent a lifetime evading ghosts-of an abusive father, of the bandmates he betrayed, of Anna, the suicidal girl he loved and abandoned. But this spirit is different. This one means to chase him to the edge of sanity. His new acquisition, delivered to his doorstep in a black heart-shaped box, is the restless soul of Anna's vengeful stepdaddy. Dune, by Frank Herbert
Narrated by Brick, Simon Vance and a full cast

Here is the novel that will be forever considered a triumph of the imagination. Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Maud'dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family-and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream.\

A stunning blend of adventure and mysticism, environmentalism and politics, Dune won the first Nebula Award, shared the Hugo Award, and formed the basis of what is undoubtedly the grandest epic in science fiction. Frank Herbert's death in 1986 was a tragic loss, yet the astounding legacy of his visionary fiction will live forever.

Non-Fiction
Roots: The Saga of an American Family, by Alex Haley
Narrated by Avery Brooks
(BBC Audiobooks America)

When he was a boy, Alex Haley's grandmother used to tell him stories about their family-stories that went down through the generations all the way to a man she called "the African," who out in the forest one day chopping wood when he was set upon by four men, beaten, chained, and dragged aboard a slave ship bound for Colonial America.

Still vividly remembering the stories after he grew up and became a writer, Haley began an astonishing ten-year genealogical detective mission to authenticate the narrative. Now he has written the monumental two-century drama of "the African," Kunta Kinte, and the six generations who came after him: slaves and freedmen, farmers and blacksmiths, mill workers and porters, lawyers and architects-and one author. In tracing his own roots, Haley has rediscovered for an entire people a rich cultural heritage that slavery took away from them. Roots is an eloquent testimonial to the indomitability of the human spirit.

Biography Memoir
Einstein: His Life and Universe, by Walter Isaacson
Narrated by Edward Herrmann
(Simon & Schuster Audio)

How did Einstein's mind work? What made him a genius? Isaacson's biography shows how his scientific imagination sprang from the rebellious nature of his personality. His fascinating story is a testament to the connection between creativity and freedom.

Based on newly released personal letters of Einstein, this book explores how an imaginative, impertinent patent clerk, a struggling father in a difficult marriage who couldn't get a teaching job or a doctorate, became the mind reader of the creator of the cosmos, the locksmith of the mysteries of the atom and the universe. His success came from questioning conventional wisdom and marveling at mysteries that struck others as mundane. This led him to embrace a morality and a politics based on respect for free minds, free spirits, and free individuals.

Achievement In Production
Sweeney Todd and the String of Pearls, by Yuri Rasovsky
Narrated by Phil Proctor, Simon Templeman, Moira Quirk, Martin Jarvis, Rosalind Ayres, Robertson Dean, and W. Morgan Sheppard

The insidious Fleet Street barber slit his first throat in an 1846 "penny dreadful," one of those gaudy serialized novels that gleefully offered thrills and gore to sensation-hungry Victorians. Titled The String of Pearls, it told of Sweeney Todd whose shop stood next to St. Dunstan's Church, just a few blocks from the Royal Courts of Justice. Here he robbed and murdered hundreds of customers. To dispose of their remains, he carried them to a nearby bakery where the cadavers became the stuffing for meat pies, the favorite mid-day repast of the lawyers who worked nearby and who got their shaves from Sweeney Todd. The man you lunched with yesterday could be your lunch today!

Blackstone Audio has commissioned this first audio version of the tale from the Audie® award-winning Hollywood Theater of the Ear. Words That Work: It's Not What You Say, It's What People Hear, by Dr. Frank Luntz
Narrated by Dr. Frank Luntz and L.J. Ganser
(Hyperion Audiobooks)

The nation's premier communications expert shares his wisdom on how the words we choose can change the course of business, politics, and life in this country. Luntz offers a behind-the-scenes look at how the tactical use of words and phrases affects what we buy, who we vote for, and even what we believe in. Nobody is in a better position to explain than Frank Luntz: He has used his knowledge of words to help more than two dozen Fortune 500 companies grow. He'll tell us why Rupert Murdoch's six-billion-dollar decision to buy DirectTV was smart because satellite was more cutting edge than "digital cable," and why pharmaceutical companies transitioned their message from "treatment" to "prevention" and "wellness." If you ever wanted to learn how to talk your way out of a traffic ticket or talk your way into a raise, this book's for you.

Dictated directly into a microcassette recorder over a three-day weekend, this book contains Stephen's most deeply held knee-jerk beliefs on The American Family, Race, Religion, Sex, Sports, and many more topics, conveniently arranged in chapter form. Always controversial and outspoken, Stephen addresses why Hollywood is destroying America by inches, why evolution is a fraud, and why the elderly should be harnessed to millstones. You may not agree with everything Stephen says, but at the very least, you'll understand that your differing opinion is wrong.

Solo Narration - Male
Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows, by J.K. Rowling
Narrated by Jim Dale
(Random House Audio Listening Library)

"There's only one word to describe Jim Dale's work on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows-magical. Few audiobook narrators can stretch the medium like Dale as he interprets more than 200 characters, giving each a distinctive voice. Giants, wizards, elves, centaurs, and muggles have singular voices that are easily recognizable. It's hard to imagine anyone else doing justice to J.K. Rowling's brilliant finale to the story of the boy wizard as he conquers fear and turns into a man. Dale has raised the bar on audiobook interpretation so high it's hard to imagine any narrator vaulting over it. If anyone were going to make a case that listening to an audiobook is superior to reading it, this book would be the best evidence. Bravo."-AudioFile

Part thriller, part historical novel, Tallgrass is a riveting exploration of the darkest-and best-parts of the human heart.

Pontoon: A Novel of Lake Wobegon, by Garrison Keillor
Narrated by Garrison Keillor
(HighBridge)

In Lake Wobegon lives a good Lutheran lady who is quite prepared to die and wishes to be cremated and her ashes placed inside a bowling ball and dropped into the lake, no prayers, no hymns, thank you very much. Meanwhile, the Detmer girl returns from California, where she has made a killing in veterinary aromatherapy, to marry her boyfriend Brent aboard Wally's pontoon boat. On Saturday, a delegation of renegade Lutheran pastors from Denmark come to town on their tour of America, their punishment for having denied the divinity of Jesus. And then there is Raoul of the cigars and tinted shades and rainbow sportscoat and his long phone message ("Hey, Precious") after the angel of death has already come and gone. All is in readiness for the wedding-and then something else happens. It is Lake Wobegon as you've imagined it: good loving people who drive each other slightly crazy.

Sweeney Todd and the String of Pearls, by Yuri Rasovsky
Narrated by Phil Proctor, Simon Templeman, Moira Quirk, Martin Jarvis, Rosalind Ayres, Robertson Dean, and W. Morgan Sheppard
(Blackstone Audio Inc.)

With tongue in cheek, writer/producer/director Yuri Rasovsky has gone back to the original penny dreadful to imbue an old string of pearls with new luster-and fresh blood.
