“the reader of the text is far from the meaning. Great distance. Maybe he secretly thinks the text is absurd/ridiculous. Poetry seems completely unnatural to the people nowadays. So usually the readers do not havegood understanding of poetry. And
in many cases the readers treat the poetry asprose.; they are embarrassed by it, try to make it sound more like prose. But actually poetry is very different from prose. It has rhyme and metre (to mention only the most simple things). In the series of BBC productions on TV of Shakespeare from around the 90s, the distinction between the parts of the playsthat are in verse/poetry and the parts in prose was very often blurred; but this distinction was very deliberate and very important. In the last half-century or so, English people seem to be even worse than Americans, even further from understanding their own literature. Of film productions, in the last 25 or 30 years, all the film productions of Shakespeare I have seen werequite bad (there are of course a few older films that are considerably better);the only film of/about a Shakespearian play that I saw that seemed to have some real understanding and power is Looking for Richard, directed by the American actor Al Pacino (who also plays Richard III in the scenes from King Richard IIIin the film). That is
perhaps the only recent thing that I could recommend,though with reservations.
