Today, we’re wishing the legendary children’s book author Lois Lowry a very happy 75th birthday! One of our all-time favorite authors of children’s literature, Lowry published her first kids book in 1977, and has since penned over 30 more. To celebrate Lowry’s birthday, we’ve put together a list of the all-time best authors of children’s literature written in English, from the contemporary to the classic, from the wildly magical to the wittily familiar. Here, we’re defining “children’s literature” as being novels aimed at the 9 to 13 set, a little bit young for YA proper, but well into the chapter book stage and getting ready for more meaty fare. After all, there’s no better way to prepare a child for a life of creativity and curiosity than to give them a bunch of great books during their formative years. Or at least we think so. Click through to read our list — and since we wanted to make this list three times over (but you’ve gotta stop somewhere), be sure to chime in with your own favorites in the comments!

Lois Lowry
Lois Lowry, whose novels consistently blow us away, is one of only five authors who have been awarded the Newbery Medal twice — once for Number the Stars in 1990, and again for The Giver in 1993 (two more of her doubly awarded peers are also on our list!). Lowry does not shy away from disturbing or difficult topics — the Holocaust, dystopian futures, terminal illness — but instead addresses them head on with grace and captivating ability. Two decades later, we’re still arguing with our friends over whether Jonas dies or finds salvation at the end of The Giver. The question, like the book, still feels urgent, which is how we know she’s one of the best.

E.L. Konigsburg
Another two-time Newbery Medal winner, E.L. Konigsburg is also the only person to have won both a Newbery Medal and a Newbery Honor (which is basically the award’s honorable mention) in the same year — for the first two books she ever wrote, no less: From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler and Jennifer, Hecate, Macbeth, William McKinley, and Me, Elizabeth, both submitted at once to her no-doubt thrilled publisher. A full 29 years later, in 1997, she won the medal again for The View from Saturday, another classic. Her work effortlessly describes the interior lives of children trying to discover their own personalities, perhaps because she has based many of her characters on her own children and students, who were, she says, “softly comfortable on the outside and solidly uncomfortable on the inside.” Perhaps one of the reasons that her work is so enduring is that that quality never quite completely goes away.

C.S. Lewis
Probably the most popular classic fantasy series in children’s literature, C.S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia has sold over 100 million copies and been published in 47 languages. The magical world of Narnia captivated children so intensely that one reader we know tells of crying uncontrollably at the end of the last book, desperate to be able to get to the fictional realm, certain that she believed enough. The now-obvious Christian allegory aside, these books are wonders of imagination that cement Lewis’s place among the best children’s lit authors of all time.

Philip Pullman
Speaking of C.S. Lewis — Philip Pullman is considered by some to be the “Anti-Lewis,” and His Dark Materials to be a direct rebuttal to The Chronicles of Narnia. We have found it in our hearts to love both (though we admit, we love Pullman best), and we think his books — captivating works of imagination filled with intelligent, passionate characters — are destined to go down in history as classics.

J.K. Rowling
Sure, it may be derivative, and it may not, as her detractors cry, be the most elevated of literature, but there’s no denying that J.K. Rowling has inspired millions of kids and adults alike with her Harry Potter series. Plus, we’re sorry, the stories, rife with wordplay and creative worldmaking, are just undeniably good — and they were especially wonderful for kids who got to grow up alongside Harry as his adventures got darker, weirder, and more dangerous, just like their own imaginations.

Lewis Carroll
Of course we couldn’t forget the author of what might be the most well-known work of children’s literature across the globe, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Obsessed with wordplay and weird to the bone, Carroll was an odd egg, but we wouldn’t have it any other way — his innovative brand of literary nonsense became a phenomenon that has inspired countless reinterpretations, and his 1865 novel (1865!) is still a modern-sounding, popular work today. Can’t beat that.

Madeleine L’Engle
We won’t list the many awards and lifetime achievement recognitions of the much-lauded Madeleine L’Engle here, and if you’re reading this list, you’ve probably read something by her and don’t need any extra encouragement from us, but suffice it to say that A Wrinkle in Time and its sequels are some of the best things to happen to children’s literature in the history of time. 50 years later, they’re still essential, inspiring, and completely strange. We love it.
Denny )

Katherine Paterson
Paterson, author of classics like The Great Gilly Hopkins (which won the National Book Award), Bridge to Terabithia (which won the Newbery Medal), can also boast of winning the prestigious Hans Christian Andersen Award, sometimes called the “Nobel Prize for children’s literature.” The eighth most frequently challenged book of the nineties, Bridge to Terabithia is a difficult but essential part of the modern canon of children’s literature, and should not be missed.

Lloyd Alexander
The author of more than forty books (and one of the founders of kids magazine Cricket), Alexander is best known for his spectacular five book series The Chronicles of Prydain, whose final installment, The High King, won the Newbery Medal in 1969. Drawing on Welsh mythology, overflowing with wit and charm, these books were some of our favorites, and inspired countless other children as well. After all, what Assistant Pig-Keeper (or nerdy 10 year old, which is basically the equivalent) doesn’t wish to grow up to be a hero?

Judy Blume
Judy Blume, it seems, got us through just about everything. From Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing to Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great to Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret (which is probably technically a YA novel — Blume excels at both), she always manages to capture the trauma and joy and utter ridiculousness of being a kid like no one else.

errr, one massive and obvious omission Roald Dahl! Wrote more well known & loved books than any in your list, and certainly ‘better’ than JK Rowling (unless this list is by an eight year old who has never read any Roald Dahl), that’s for sure!

Where is A. A. Milne, with Winnie the Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner?! Before Disney got to them, these books were filled with joy, magic, poignancy, and adventure – true timeless classics.

Seriously, Astrid Lindgren and Tove Jansson !?

I like this list. I know how hard it is to encompass something like ALL of children’s literature into a list of 10.
This is a pretty good start and I think you could add Robert Cormier, who wrote The Chocolate War and I am the Cheese.
Kerishma - Tuesday Mar 20, 2012 at 11:37 am
Again, it’s hard to include everyone in a list of 10, but Roald Dahl seems like a glaring omission! And when I was a kid I loved LOVED the Junie B. Jones books by Barbara Park, as well as the books by Gail Carson Levine (who I guess would be better classified as YA…but still)

Nicely done list — I mean, with the inclusion of Madeline L’Engle, Philip Pullman, and E. L. Koingsburg, it’s difficult to complain. Except of course with the exclusion of Norton Juster. Get rid of C. S. Lewis and include Juster.
Also, I’m glad to see J. K. Rowling included on here. Missing Roald Dahl is a bit of a disappointment, but I consider Rowling, particularly toward the end of the series (whether she needed a stronger editor or not) to be a much stronger writer than Dahl.

Lets get one thing straight, CS Lewis towers above Pullman, there no comparison. Also, There are about 4 selections that could have been replaced with Kenneth Grahame.

A quick shout out to some of my favorite children’s authors of color–Rita Williams-Garcia, Grace Lin, Monica Brown, Jacqueline Woodson, Allen Say….I could go on and on.
Philip Nel - Tuesday Mar 20, 2012 at 3:18 pm
Restricting myself to the 9-13 age range, some prominent missing authors: Christopher Paul Curtis, Roald Dahl, Jacqueline Woodson, Shaun Tan, Tove Jansson. I realize that it’s hard to include all in a top 10, so here are two you could cut: Lewis, & L’Engle. Both wrote for young readers, but how many of their books are great? Lion, the Witch, & the Wardrobe (for Lewis), and A Wrinkle in Time (L’Engle). But The Magician’s Nephew? Not so much.

I read THE GIVER in elementary school and loved it. I read it in high school and thought I understood all the symbolism. I read it again in college and discovered so much more. Now I read it to my kids and fell in love all over again. Thank you Lois Lowry for writing books that matter.
Jessica Leader - Tuesday Mar 20, 2012 at 7:10 pm
Hats off for naming Lowry as one of the Top 10! I’m rooting for her as a future ambassador of children’s literature. Among other things, she’s enormously versatile: realistic fiction, sci-fi, historical fiction; humor and tragedy; chapter books through middle-grade. In addition, while the above description celebrates her bravery in taking on complex topics, let’s also mention her humor! ANASTASIA AT THIS ADDRESS still makes me laugh harder than just about any book, and books like THE GIVER include funny moments as well. Happy birthday to one of my enduringly favorite writers, and thanks to her for working so hard to grace our shelves.
One peeve, though: No Walter Dean Myers??
Anne - Tuesday Mar 20, 2012 at 8:24 pm
Well isn’t Hans Christian Andersen missing!? I mean he is the man giving name to the award you call “The Nobel Prize for children’s literature”… Well I have to admit I’m European so I don’t know a few of these authors and therefore I don’t want to choose who goes – Just saying that H. C. Andersen should definitely be on the list (and Astrid Lindgren too).

Who is Lois Lowery? Never heard of her! And where is Astrid Lindgren with Pippi Lonckstocking, Emil of Lonneberga, Karlsson on the Roof, The Borthers Lionheart and Ronja the Robbers Daughter? Shouldn’t you have a wider bibliography to show from?

Yes, but, where is Susan Cooper and The Dark is Rising series? Surely should be on this list!

donna - Wednesday Mar 21, 2012 at 8:44 am
Whoops! and Roald Dahl and John Bellairs and Daniel Pinkwater…? OK, so this is a hard list to make. Perhaps you should have gone with fifteen…

Roald Dahl. Obviously.
eden - Wednesday Mar 21, 2012 at 10:20 am
No love for Louisa May Alcott or L. M. Montgomery? Jo March and Anne of Green Gables are the best heroines a little girl (or boy!) could ever have!

Some great choices here but I think you are missing Louis Sachar – Sideways Stories from Wayside School and Theres a Boy in the Girls Bathroom were my absolute favorite books / series when I was a kid.

I strongly second Susan Cooper and the Dark is Rising series. So so so good and original. I read this series at least 5 times growing up.

So many good authors for children! My favorite is Natalie Babbitt. Tuck Everlasting is a classic. Also Louise Fitzhugh.

Kathleen - Wednesday Mar 21, 2012 at 1:51 pm
Louise Fitzhugh should be included for Harriet the Spy and The Long Secret, as should L.M Montgomery for the Anne of Green Gables series. And where is Enid Blyton? Kenneth Grahame?
David - Wednesday Mar 21, 2012 at 2:00 pm
Not only can I not believe you left out L. Frank Baum (only the greatest children’s author ever), I can’t believe none of the other comments has suggested him. Frankie was awesome; don’t let him be forgotten!

Yes, to Andersen, Dahl, Milne and Sendak of those your list does lack.
But the hippest cat that I would choose, My most favorite doctor, Theodor Seuss Geisel (Dr. Seuss)

It is intensely satisfying that so many people have called for Roald Dahl’s inclusion, and equally satisfying that not a one has mentioned Suzanne Collins. I’d like to see Diana Wynne Jones on a list like this, and maybe William Steig, but there’s only so much room, and Pullman is the only author on it I could bring myself to argue about.

Q. Porter - Wednesday Mar 21, 2012 at 3:44 pm
Oh, what a challenging list to make! So many great authors. I read voraciously as a child and Enid Blyton was my favorite. I would also add Dahl to the list. I can see why Dr. Seuss is left off, since I would guess Seuss books are targeted to a slightly younger demographic. Thanks for this; it is fun to see what others have suggested…I will look into several of those suggested to read to my young nieces!
Gaby - Wednesday Mar 21, 2012 at 4:43 pm
I would have dropped JK Rowling for some of the classics mentioned above – sure, she’s been a craze for the past decade, but I don’t know if she has the continued staying power of the others on the list. As for other additions, Tamora Pierce and Diana Wynn Jones would be some good ones. I think a second list is in order.
fringearte - Wednesday Mar 21, 2012 at 5:24 pm
E.B. White of course, of course – for creating not just one popular series but several wholly imagined books and their worlds of characters – Stuart Little, Charlotte’s Web, Trumpet of the Swan – since you have mentioned several authors who have withstood the test of time, I think there should be two categories one contemporary/poplular, and another to make room for those who are proven undoubtedly timeless.
Laura - Wednesday Mar 21, 2012 at 5:24 pm
I’d have to agree with most people and say where is Roald Dahl and Enid Blyton?? It is because of these two writers that I began my love of literature and haven’t looked back since. I still enjoy grabbing one of their books and diving into it every now and again.

Where’s JRR Tolkien? I agree about Christopher Paul Curtis and many others that could have been included.
Tom Parrett - Wednesday Mar 21, 2012 at 5:57 pm
Arthur Ransome is a terrible omission. The Swallows and Amazons series, because it involves boats, is timeless. The rural Lake District world Ransome uses, unlike many on this list, is no adult-spun fantasy—it resembles ours.
And Robert Louis Stevenson? Hard to beat Kidnapped or Treasure Island or Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde for drama.
I read a lot of Dickens before I was 12. Many of his characters are children or young adults (Great Expectations, David Copperfield, Oliver Twist).
Compared to these three, all but a few on the list seem about as richly imagined and well-written as video games.

The problem with lists like this is that educators, librarians, and critics are far more fond of these books than children! As a former fourth grade teacher (and mother of two grown children), I can assure you that these books were usually read only when required by the curriculum. Was a rare child who eagerly plucked them off a book shelf for their reading pleasure!
Reda Rountree - Thursday Mar 22, 2012 at 4:47 pm
A wonderful list, for sure, but you left off the most gifted children’s writer of the last century, J.M. Barrie. No children’s author has encompassed a kid’s wonderment and excitement and experience the way he did in “Peter Pan.” And no other author has done so much to help children with the writing of one book, leaving it to the Children’s Hospital in London. What an amazing man.

I agree that I wished that Natalie Babbit was included in the list, perhaps instead of Philip Pullman and also Frances Hodgson Burnett or Louisa May Alcott instead of Lewis Carroll….. All and all it was a surprisingly good list…

Good list of authors ~ Couldn’t believe you left out Roald Dahl, among some others that I think should have been included:

So many books to love—lots of “stand-alones” as well as the Meg Murry (A Wrinkle in Time, etc.) books and the Vicky Austin books (especially A Ring of Endless Light). Had to read down, down, down the list to thank David for L. Frank Baum, on more for fringeart’s E.B. White, on and on for Susan’s JRR Tolkien, thanks to Reda for J.M. Barrie and to Karen for (hooray) T.H. White, but am I the only one to have read and re-read Thornton W. Burgess? Sitting at the library, reading all of the “West Wind” and “When” stories was such a fond memory that I searched out a copy for my own.

Carol, I guess I was that rare child. I read all these books voluntarily, and I’m guessing I’m not alone, judging by all the comments here.
The Chronicles of Narnia were life-changing for me (not so much Phillip Pullman, although he is a great writer and you were right to include him). Obviously, this is a short list, but I agree Roald Dahl, LM Montgomery (also life-changing for me), Astrid Lindgren and Enid Blyton needed to be included. Louisa Mae Alcott and Beverly Cleary and whoever wrote Ramona the Spy were all highly influential, too.
And I love Suzanne Collins (to address the comment above) and I think she is an excellent writer, but she’s not Top 10. That’s a very tough list to make.
Sweet sweet little Ramona,I think I\'ll try and phone her I let her in if you\'re wondering why Cause she\'s a spy for the BBI。

It’s very difficult to choose just ten authors as the very best, but I encourage all of you pushing for authors like Astrid Lindgren and Dr. Seuss to go back and re-read the opening bit of this article. The selected authors had to have written books in English for the 9-12 age set. I agree that many more authors deserve to be named as “the best”, but I commend this article for taking a shot at the top 10.
Antoinette - Saturday Mar 24, 2012 at 3:46 pm
Just when I was feeling sad about some of the missing authors on your list, I read the comments and everyone began to mentioned them. I was bummed about Roald Dahl, too. I’m wondering if you limited your list to the authors of chapter books, and not picture books. Lastly, there was no mention of any authors of color. Why not?

Going through my old books tonight, I found some more gems that I loved when I was younger:
~ Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm by Kate Douglas Wiggin
~ Goodnight Mister Tom by Michelle Magorian
~ Babe the Gallant Pig by Dick-King Smith (and The Water Horse)
~ Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls
~ Lassie Come Home by Eric Knight
~ Mrs. Frisby & The Rats of NIMH by Robert C. O’Brien
The authors that wrote these books wrote wonderful stories that transported the reader into another time and place ~
I know for me with my bad legs (and when I was young a stuttering problem) reading these timeless books helped ease the loneliness of my childhood ~

What about Gail Carson Levine? She wrote Neverland Fairies books (yes, like Tinker Bell and her friends), Dave At Night, and Ella Enchanted!

I miss Neil Gaiman from this list.

I like all of them but Philip Pullman Dark Materials books were epic until someone decided to make a movie. And the outcome was rubbish. Also get rid of C.S.Lewis(read his books but dunno why they\'re so special) and put in Roald Dahl.
