A KISS FOR A LITTLE BEAR.

    "This picture makes me happy,"

    said Little Bear.

    "Hello, Hen.

    This picture is for Grandmother.

Will you take it to her, Hen?"

    "Yes, I will," said Hen.

    Grandmother was happy.

"This kiss is for Little Bear," she said.

"Will you take it to him, Hen?"

"I will be glad to," said Hen.

    Then Hen saw some friends.

    She stopped to chat.

    "Hello, Frog.

I have a kiss for Little Bear.

    It is from his grandmother.

Will you take it to him, Frog?"

    "OK," said Frog.

    But Frog saw a pond.

    He stopped to swim.

    "Hi, Cat.

I have a kiss for Little Bear.

    It  is from hisgrandmother.

Take it to him, will your?

    Cat-hi!

Here I am, in the pond.

    Come and get the kiss."

    "Oogh!" said Cat.

But he came and got the kiss.

Cat saw a nice spot to sleep.

    "Little Skunk,

I have a kiss for Little Bear.

    It is from his grandmother.

Take it to him like a good little skunk."

Little Skunk was glad to do that.

But then he saw another little skunk.

    She was very pretty.

He gave the kiss to her.

    And she gave it back.

    And he gave it back.

    And then Hen came along.

    "Too much kissing," she said.

"But this is Little Bear's kiss,

    from his grandmother,"

    said Little Skunk.

    "Indeed!" said Hen.

    "Who has it now?"

    Little Skunk had it.

    Hen got it back.

    She ran to Little Bear,

and she gave him the kiss.

    "It is from your grandmother,"

    she said.

"It is for the picture you sent her."

    "Take one back to her,"

    said Little Bear.

    "No," said Hen.

    "It gets all mixed up!"

The skunks decided to get married.

    They had a lovely wedding.

    Everyone came.

And Little Bear was best man.

Alexander and theTerrible,Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

I went to sleep with gum in my mouth and there's gum in my hear and when Igotout of bed this morning. I tripped on the skateboard and by mistake Idroppedmy sweater in the sink while the water was running and I could tell itwasgoing to be a Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.
At breakfast Anthony found a sting Ray car kit in his breakfast cereal boxandNick found a Junior Undercover Agent code ring in his breakfast cereal boxbutin my breakfast cereal box all I found was breakfast cereal. I think I'llmoveto Australia.
In the car pool Mrs. Gibson let Becky have a seat by the window, AudreyandElliott got seats by the window too. I said I was being scrunched, I said Iwasbeing smashed; I said if I don't get a seat by the window, I am going tobecarsick. No one even answered. I could tell it was going to be aTerrible,Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.
At school Mrs. Dickens liked Paul's picture of the sailboat better thanmypicture of the invisible castle. At singing time she said I sang too loud.Atcounting time she said I left out sixteen. Who needs sixteen? I could tellitwas going to be a Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.
I could tell because Paul said I wasn't his best friend anymore. He saidthatPhilip Parker was his best friend and that Abert Moyo was his next bestfriendand that I was only his third best friend. I hope you sit on a tack, Isaid toPaul. I hope the next time you get a double-decker strawberry ice-creamconethe ice cream part fall off the cone part and lands in Australia.
There were two cupcakes in Philip Parker's lunch bag and Albert got aHersheybar with almond and Paul's mother gave him a piece of jelly roll thathadlittle coconut sprinkles on the top. Guests whose mother forgot to putindessert? It was a Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.
On the way downstairs, the elevator door closed on my foot and while wewerewaiting for my mom to go get the car Anthony made me fall where it wasmuddyand then when I started crying because of the mud Nick said I was a crybabyand while I was punching Nick for saying cry baby my mom came back with thecarand scolded me for being muddy and fighting. I am having a Terrible,Horrible,No Good, Very Bad Day. No one even answered.
So then we went to the shoe store to but some sneakers. Anthony chose whiteoneswith blue stripes; Wick chose red ones with white stripes. I chose blueoneswith red stripes, but then the shoe man said, we're all sold out. Theymade mebuy plain old white ones, but they can't make me wear them.
When we picked up my dad at his office he said I couldn't play with hiscopingmachine, but I forgot. He also said to watch out for the books on hisdeck, andI was careful as could be except for my elbow. He also said don't foolaroundwith his phone, but I think I called Australia, my dad said please don'tpickhim up anymore. It was a Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.
There were lima beans for dinner and I hate limas. There was kissing on TV andIhate kissing.
My bath was too hot, I got soap in my eyes, my marble went clown the drain, andI had to wear my railroad-train pajamas. I hate my railroad-train pajamas.
When I went to bed Nick took back the pillow. He said I could keep andtheMickey Mouse night light burned out and I bit my tongue. The catwants tosleep with Anthony, not with me. It has been a Terrible, Horrible, NoGood, VeryBad Day.
My mom says some days are like that, Even in Australia.

    Amigo.

    Amigo.

    byByrd Baylor.

    Hismother said,

    "Come,Francisco, my son.

Tellme why your eyes are sad,

    Mylittle one."

    Hisfather said,

    "Howquiet you are.

    Letme play you a tune

    Onmy old guitar."

    Plink.

    Plink.

    Hestrums the guitar,

    Singing,

    "Troublesrun.

    Fastand far .

    Pastthe mountains

    Behinda star."

    Plink.

    Plink.

    A-plink.

    Franciscolistened to the song.

Thenhe told them what was wrong.

"Youknow, I want a dog. Any dog. A hound .

Adog I'll call Amigo and he'll follow me around

    WhereverI go. wherever I go

    He'llbe there.

    Somedays I'll follow him

    Justto make it fair."

    Francisco'smother turned with a sigh.

Francisco'shither looked off at the sky.

"No,Francisco. It's all we can do

Justtrying to feed  your brothers andyou."

    Franciscoseldom thought about

Thethings he had to do without

    Because

Hethought  about the things he had.

Inhis mind he tried to add them up .

    Somany brothers.

    Somany jokes.

Somany miles of desert all around.

    Somany cactuses. So many mountains.

Somany places where caves can be found.

    And

    Plentyof wishes

    Towish on a star.

    Plentyof songs

    Inthat guitar

    But

Notenough money in his father's pocket.

    That'sthe way things are.

    Fancisco'sfather mines for gold.

Heknows he'll find it before he's old,

    But

    Hehasn't found it yet

    Sohe has to say,

    "No,Francisco.

    Anothermouth to feed

    Isone more than I need.

    Youjust forget

    Abouta pet.

    Hismother asked,

    "What'ssmall and wild

    Andcan feed itself?

    We'llhave that, my child."

    "Butwhat?" Francisco frowned.

    Youcould tame a bird,

    Abright wild bird

    Withthe sweetest song

    Youever heard."

    "No.No. I can't fly.

    Hecould go much

    Higherthan I."

    "Upin the mountains

    Thereare wildcats.

Youcan catch one if you're bold.

    Herein the valley

Thereare tortoises one hundred years old."

"Atortoise is too slow for my fast feet,

Andwildcats won't play in the desert heat."

    "Howabout a lizard?

    Howabout a quail?

    Howabout a coyote

    Witha yellow tail?

    "No.No. And I don't want a frog."

    Franciscoshook his head,

    Hehad to have a dog.

    Suddenlyhis mother whirled around.

Hervoice came out with a laughing sound.

    "Ah,Francisco, my son!

    APRAIRIE DOG!

    Couldthat be the one?"

    Theyall laughed.

    "APRAIRIE DOG.

    Itseemed so funny.

    He'smore like a ground squirrel

    Or amouse or a bunny

    Thana dog.

    Astrange little creature

    Withfast little feet,

    Whodoesn't mind

    Thedesert heat.

"Aprairie dog would be easy to find.

Ofcourse, I had a real dog in my mind

    But

    If Itry

    Ithink that I

    Couldlove

    Aprairie dog.

    Atiny black-eyed, run-around

    Hole-in-the-ground

    Squeak-a-dry-sound

    Prairiedog,

    Avery

    Merry

    Prairie

    Dog."

    Francisco'sfather said,

    "You'dhave to win his love

    Beforeyou tame him."

    "Yes,I will win his love.

    ThenI will name him

    Amigo.

    That'sthe name I was saving

    Forsome big hound.

    ButI think it will do

    Fora little run-around."

    Hismother smiled.

"Howdo you tame a prairie dog,

    Athing that's wild?

Howdo you make him walk beside

    Ahuman child?"

    "I'llgive him presents

    Likewater and seeds

    Andtall sweet weeds.

    I'llgive him love

    Andwhatever he needs."

    Franciscohurried

    ToPrairie-Dog Town.

    Veryquietly

    Hesat down

    On arocky slope

    Towatch and wait

    Anddream and hope.

Prairie-DogTown is a town under ground,

Alltunnel and burrow and hilly mound .

    Thebusiest town for miles around.

Tenlittle heads popped out of the earth

    Andlooked around curiously

    Andjabbered furiously

Andfrowned at Francisco for all they were worth.

Hewanted them to know that he

    Wasa friend, a brother,

    Wantedthem to see him

    Simplyas another

    Desertcreature

    Whomeant no harm.

    Sohe lay down

    Withhis head on his arm.

    Thesun was warm.

    Henestled deep

    Intoclumps of grass.

    Timepassed. And then,

    Franciscofell asleep.

    Whenhe opened his eyes

    Therewasn't a sound.

    Hesat up

    Andlooked around

    Andfound

One prairiedog still sitting in his place.

Heseemed to be studying Francisco's face.

    "Canthat be Amigo?

    Doeshe read my mind?

    Doeshe know he's the one

    ThatI came to find?"

    Verygently he whispered,

    "Amigo."

    Theword

    Wasso soft

    Itcould only be heard

    Byone prairie dog

    Andone low-flying bird.

    "Amigo."

    Itwas half laugh, half song,

Thekind of word that floats along.

    Thatday wherever Francisco went

Hewent with his dreams and he went content.

Andhe went with a hop and he went with a hope

Andhe jumped over rocks like an antelope.

    Nowyou know Francisco

    Andthe way he planned

    Totame him a friend

    Inthat desert land.

    Butyou still don't know.

    Thoughyou very soon will.

    Whatcreature was hiding

    Behindthat hill. .

    Look

    Towardthe mountain,

    There

    Towardthe sun.

    Seethat brown speck

    Dartand run?

    Thatis Amigo.

    Thedesert is wide

    Andthe rocks are tall.

    Youmight not notice

    Acreature so small.

    Butthat is Amigo,

    Theprairie-dog child

    Whoruns with the wind

    Whenthe wind runs wild.

    Justone summer old,

    Adventurousand bold,

    He'ssmall enough to look

    Atortoise in the eye,

    Orexchange remarks

    Witha passing fly,

    Andbrave enough to jump

    Atstars in the sky.

    Henever really caught one

    Buthe likes to try.

    Yes,this is Amigo

    Alwaysfull of ideas,

    Sayingsummer is his.

    Andmaybe it is.

    Torun through.

    Butshould he be running

    Sofast and so far?

    Whyisn't he home

    Wherehis brothers are,

    Inthe dim burrows

    Whichwind far down

    Belowthe surface

    OfPrairie-Dog Town?

    There

Oldprairie dogs sit in the sun

    Keepingwatch through the summer day

Whilethe little ones dodge in and out

    Likechildren at play.

    ButAmigo isn't there.

    He'severywhere,

    Followingevery path he knows.

    Hedoesn't worry,

    Heonly goes.

    And  where is he going?

    Whatdoes he seek?

    Whydoes he gaze

    Atthe mountain peak?

    Amigoruns to a certain hill.

    Therehe stops and waits until

Hehears the sound of a boy's easy laughter.

    Thenhe knows he's found what he came after;

    Thatboy!

    Amigosits,

    Quietas a stone,

    Andsees the boy

    Walkingalone

    Andcarrying a heavy pail

    Ofwater down the rocky trail

    Andsinging.

    Ah,what a sound!

    Amigofound

    Itgoing round

    Hishead all day.

    Itwould not go away.

    Thatsound of singing,

    Ringing

    Inhis head.

    Hesaid,

"Iknow every sound for miles around,

    Everysmall and quiet sound.

    Likeearthworms walking underground

    Andthe whisper of quail

    Andthe wet creaking wail

    Ofbaby toads after a rain,

    Andthe rustle of grass

    Wherea deer has lain.

    Yes,

    Ithink there's many a sound

    Pleasantenough to have around.

    But

    Humanboys

    Makethe finest

    Kindof noise

    Iever heard.

    Betterthan water

    Orwind or bird,"

    Thisboy was a little thing.

    Onlyso high.

    Buthe seemed to Amigo

    Toreach the sky,

    Tallas a mountain,

    Brownand strong.

    Amigofollowed him

    Allday long.

    Heheard his whistle

    Andhe heard his song

    Carriedby the wind,

    Lightas a feather.

    Amigosaid,

    "Iwonder whether

    Heever saw me

    Peepingfrom under

    Thatmesquite tree

    Andpopping up

    Fromclumps of grass

    Alongthe way

    Tosee him pass."

    Buthis mother said.

    "Becareful, my child.

    Ahuman boy

    Isvery wild."

    Amigosaid,

"I'lltame him if it takes a year.

Thesound of the boy is all I want to hear!"

    "Youcan't mean that !

    Betterago play with the

    Olepack rat."

    Theprairie dogs listened

    Withgreat surprise

    Youcould tell what they thought

    Bythe look in their eyes.

Onefinally said, as he gazed at the sun,

"Betterlearn from those who are wise, little one.

    Mountainis your friend.

    Windis your toy.

    Let'sstop this talk about

    Ahuman boy.

Ahundred aunts, uncles and cousins agreed.

    "That'sright,"  they said,

    Andthey wiggled their whiskers

    Andnodded their heads.

    "Oh,yes, that's right,"

    ButAmigo told them,

    "Hedoesn't look wild,

    Iknow if I try

    Ican tame that child.

    "Howabout an ant?"

    "Anant?

    Ican't

    Lovean ant.

    I justcan't."

    "Howabout a be

    Witha lazy buzz?"

    "No,I don't like honey

    Andhe does."

    "Playwith a cricket.

    Playwith a quail.

    Tameyou a lizard

    Witha sandy tail."

    "They'reall good friends

    Butthey're just not boys

    Andthey can't make

    Thatfine boy-noise."

    Amigotried to make them understand.

"I'mas much a part of the desert land

Asany mountain or grain of sand,

    Orsoft quail cry

    Orsunset sky

    Ordust-devil blowing high

    As abird.

    Andthat boy

    Is apart of it too.

    Thesame as I.

He'sa desert thing like any other.

SometimesI think he is my brother."

    Amigo'smother nodded her head.

"Taminga boy seems odd," she said.

"It'snever been done, as far as I know,

Butno one ever loved one so.

    Andthat makes all the difference.

    Youmay be the one

    Whowill do it, my son."

    "Thething to do now

    Istame him.

    Buthow?

    Whatcan I give him?

    Iwish I knew.

    Ihave no treasures,

    Noteven a few."

    "Justgive him something

    Thatpleases you.

    "Likesilvery sand

    Tohold in his hand?

    Orthe blue jay feather

    Thatfloated down

    Straightfrom the sky

    ToPrairie-Dog Town?

    Orthat cool green shadowy grass

Whichgrows so tall at the mountain pass

    Andtastes of mountain water?"

    Hismother said, "These

    Wouldsurely please

    Aboy."

    SoAmigo scampered

    Andran and hopped.

    Thesun was high

    Beforehe stopped.

    Atthe very top

    Ofthe mountain pass,

    Whereall the grass

    Wassweet as honey

    Andtall enough to hide in.

    Amigotook great pride in

    Hiswork that day.

Hesniffed a thousand blades of grass

    Beforehe found the one

Thatsmelled the most like mountain water.

    Andshone like mountain sun.

    Hetook the green blade

    Tenderlydown

    Intothe valley near

    Prairie-DogTown.

    Andbeside the path

    Wherethe boy often came,

Heplaced the grass on a small white stone.

    Whichhe always thought of

    As hisown.

Ashe waited he made a kind of game

Ofdreaming the boy was already tame

    Andknew his name.

    Andsaid,

    "Amigo."

    Butit was no game,

    Forthe boy came along

    Trailinghis song

    Inthe windy air.

    Andit was no dream,

    Forhe saw Amigo there.

    Hedid not speak.

    Heonly sat

    Veryquietly gazing at

    Theworld of sun and sand.

Andwhen he left, a blade of grass

    Wasclutched in his brown hand.

    AndAmigo ran home

    Boundingwith joy.

    Shouting,  "Listen,

    I'vejust about

    Tamedme a boy!"

    Atthe same time,

    Onthe same day.

    Yourcould hear

    Franciscosay,

    "Mama.I know that he's

    Justabout mine!

    Isn'tthat wonderful?

    Isn'tthat fine?"

    Franciscowent back to the stone

    Everyday.

    Hewas a friend

    Inevery way.

    Hebrought wild cherries

    Gatheredin the mountains

    Andfat dark berries

    Thatgrew on sandy banks.

    Tosee Amigo eat them

    Wasall the thanks

    Heneeded.

Whenthe summer sun beat fiercely down

Andthe heat lay heavy on Prairie-Dog Town,

Hefound a rock shaped like a cup

Andevery morning he filled it up

    Withwater.

Andhe kept one eye on the sky

Towarn Amigo when hawks flew by.

    Andevery day

    Amigocame closer

    Tothe place

    WhereFrancisco sat.

    Asnear as that.

    Theboy was taming Amigo.

    Oh,yes,

    That'sso.

    Andif you were watching Amigo

    You'dknow

    Thathe was taming Francisco.

    Andyou would think

    Theboy wished he were tame

    Theway he came

    Closer

    And

    Closer.

    Franciscotook the presents

    Amigoleft here and there.

    Heeven stuck that blue jay

    Featherin his hair.

    Manya time

    Theboy would lie down

    Inthe tall wispy grass

    NearPrairie-Dog Town,

Quietas a field mouse in its nest,

Likeany desert creature taking a rest.

Amigoliked knowing that he was near.

Helistened for his whistle in the summer air.

Andsure enough the whistle was there!

    Amigoran

    Closeto the sound.

    Franciscosmiled.

    Turnedaround

    Andmet Amigo.

    Thatwas the way

    Ithappened that day.

    Firstthey climbed a hill.

    Theyfollowed a bee.

    Thenthey stopped to rest

    By amesquite tree.

Theydidn't talk much for the wind was shrill.

Theysat there quietly, as good friends will,

Admiringthe view from that rocky hill.

Frog and toad are friends : Spring
    Spring

    - 1 -
Frog ran up the path to Toad’s house.
He knocked on the front door.
    There was no answer.
    “Toad, Toad,” shouted Frog,
    “wake up. It is spring!”
“Blah,” said a voice from inside the house.
    “Toad! Toad!” cried Frog.

    - 2 -
“The sun is shining! The snow is melting, Wake up!”
“I am not here,” said the voice.

    - 3 -
Frog walked into the house. It was dark.
    All the shutters were closed.
“Toad, where are you?” called Frog.
“Go away,” said the voice from a corner of the room.

    - 4 -
    Toad was lying in bed.
He had pulled all the covers over his head.
Frog pushed Toad out of bed.
He pushed him out of the house and onto the front porch.
Toad blinked in the bright sun.
    “Help!” said Toad.
    “I cannot see anything.”

    - 5 -
    “Don’t be silly,” said Frog.
“What you see is the clear warm light of April. And it means that we can begin a whole new year together, Toad. Think of it,” said Frog.
“We will skip through the meadows and run through the woods and swim in the river.
In the evenings we will sit right here on this front porch and count the stars.”

    - 6 -
“You can count them, Frog,” said Toad.
“I will be too tired. I am going back to bed.”

    - 7 -
Toad went back into the house.
He got into the bed and pulled the covers over his head again.
    “But, toad,” cried Frog,
“you will miss all the fun!”
    “Listen, Frog,” said Toad.
“How long have I been asleep?”

    - 8 -
“You have been asleep since November,” said Frog.
    “Well then,” said Toad,
“a little more sleep will not hurt me. Come back again and wake me up at about half past May. Good night, Frog.”

    - 9 -
    “But, Toad,” said Frog,
“I will be lonely until then.”
    Toad did not answer.
    He had fallen asleep.
    Frog looked at Toad’s calendar.
The November page was still on top.
Frog tore off the November page.

    - 10 -
He tore off the December page.
And the January page, the February page, and the March page.
He came to the April page.
Frog tore off the April page too.

    - 11 -
Then Frog ran back to Toad’s bed.
“Toad, Toad, wake up. It is May now.”
    “What?” said Toad.
“Can it be May so soon?”
    “Yes,” said Frog.
    “Look at your calendar.”
    Toad looked at the calendar.
The May page was on top.

    - 12 -
“Why, it is May!” said Toad as he climbed out of bed.
Then he and Frog ran outside to see how the world was looking in the spring.

青蛙和蟾蜍2 Frog and toad are friends : The Story

    3
One day in summer, Frog was not feeling well.
Toad said, “Frog, you are looking green.”
    “But I always look green,”
“Today you look very green even for a frog,” said Toad.
“Get into my bed and rest.”

    4
Toad made Frog a cup of hot tea.
Frog drank the tea, and then he said,
“Tell me a story while I am resting.”

    5
    “All right,” said Toad.
“Let me think of a story to tell you.”
    Toad thought and thought.
But he could not think of a story to tell Frog.

    6
“I will go out on the front porch and walk up and down,” said Toad.
“Perhaps that will help me to think of a story.”
Toad walked up and down on the porch for a long time.
But he could not think of a story to tell Frog.

    7
Then Toad went into the house and stood on his head.
“Why are you standing on your head?” asked Frog.
“I hope that if I stand on my head, it will help me to think of a story,” said Toad.

    8
Toad stood on his head for a long time.
But he could not think of a story to tell Frog.
Then Toad poured a glass of water over his head.

    9
“Why are you pouring water over your head?” asked Frog.
“I hope that if I pour water over my head, it will help me to think of a story,” said Toad.
Toad poured many glasses of water over his head.

    10
But he could not think of a story to tell Frog.
Then Toad began to bang his head against the wall.
“Why are you banging your head against the wall?” asked Frog.
“I hope that if I bang my head against the wall hard enough, it will help me to think of a story,” said Toad.

    11
“I am feeling much better now, Toad,” said Frog. “I do not think I need a story anymore.”
“Then you get out of bed and let me get into it,” said Toad,
“Because now I feel terrible.” Frog said, “Would you like me to tell you a story, Toad?”
“Yes,” said Toad, “if you know one.”

    12
“Once upon a time,” said Frog,
“There were two good friends, a Frog and a Toad. The frog was not feeling well. He asked his friend the Toad to tell him a story. The Toad could not think of a story. He walked up and down on the porch, but he could not think of a story. He stood on his head, but he could not think of a story. He poured water over his head, but

    13
he could not think of a story. He banged his head against the wall, but he still could not think of a story. Then the toad did not feel so well, and the frog was feeling better. So the toad went to bed and told him a story. The end. How was that, Toad?” said Frog.
But Toad did not answer. He had fallen asleep.

    A Lost Button

    1
Toad and Frog went for a long walk.
They walked across a large meadow.
    They walked in the woods.
    They walked along the river.
At last they went back home to toad’s house.
    “Oh, that,” said toad.

    2
“Not only do my feet hurt, but I have lost one of the buttons on my jacket.”

    3
    “Don’t worry,” said Frog.
“We will go back to all the places where we walked. We will soon find your button.”
They began to look for the button in the tall grass.

    4
“Here is your button!” cried Frog.
“That button is black, My button was white.”
Toad put the black button in his pocket.

    5
A sparrow flew down. “Excuse me,” said the sparrow.
“Did you lose a button? I found one.”
“That is not my button,” said toad.
“That button has two holes. My button had four holes.”
Toad put the button with two holes in his pocket.

    6
They went back to the woods and looked on the dark paths.
“Here is your button,” said Frog.
“That is not my button,” cried Toad.
“That button is small. My button wasbig.” Toad put the small button in his pocket.

    7
A raccoon came out from behind a tree.
“I heard that you were looking fo a button,” he said.
“Here is one that I just found.”
“That is not my button!” wailed Toad.
“That button is square. My button was round.”
Toad put the square button in his pocket.

    8
Frog and Toad went back to the river.
They looked for the button in the mud.
“Here is your button,” said Frog.
“That is not my button!” shouted toad.
“That button is thin. My button was thick.”

    9
Toad put the thin button in his pocket.
    He was very angry.
He jumped up and down and screamed,
“The whole world is covered with buttons, and not one of them is mine!”

    10
Toad ran home and slammed the door.
There, on the floor, he saw his white, four-holed, big, round, thick button.
    “Oh,” said Toad.
“It was here all the time. What a lot of trouble I have made for Frog. ”

    11
Toad took all of the buttons out of his pocket.
He took his sewing box down from the shelf.
Toad sewed the buttons all over his jacket.

    12
The next day Toad gave his jacket to Frog.
Frog thought that it was beautiful.
He put it on and jumped for joy.
None of the buttons fell off.
Toad had sewed them on very well.

Frog and toad are friends: A Swim

    1
Toad and Frog went down to the river.
“What a day for a swim,” said Frog.
    “Yes,” said Toad.
“I will go behind these rocks and put on my bathing suit.”
“I don’t wear a bathing suit,” said Frog.
    “Well, I do,” said Toad.

    2
“After I put on my bathing suit, you must not look at me until I get into the water.”

    3
    “Why not?” asked Frog.
“Because I look funny in my bathing suit. That is why,” said Toad.
Frog closed his eyes when Toad came out from behind the rocks.
Toad was wearing his bathing suit.
    “Don’t peek,” he said.

    4
Frog and Toad jumped into the water. They swam all afternoon.
Frog swam fast and made big splashes.
Toad swam slowly and made smaller splashes.

    5
A turtle came along the riverbank.
“Frog, tell that turtle to go away,” said Toad.
“I do not want him to see me in my bathing suit when I come out of the river.”
Frog swam over to the turtle.

    6
“Turtle,” said Frog, “you will have to go away.”
“Why should I?” asked the turtle.
“Because Toad thinks that he looks funny in his bathing suit, and he does not want you to see him,” said Frog.

    7
    Some lizards were sitting nearby.
“Does Toad really look funny in his bathing suit?” they asked.
A snake crawled out of the grass. “If Toad looks funny in his bathing

    8
suit,” said the snake, “then I, for one, want to see him.”
“We want to see him too,” said two dragonflies.
“Me too,” said a field mouse.

    9
“I have not seen anything funny in a long time.” Frog swam back to Toad.
“I am sorry, Toad,” he said.
“Everyone wants to see how you will look.”
“Then I will stay right here until they go away,” said Toad.

    10
The turtle and the lizards and the snake and the dragonflies and the field mouse all sat on the riverbank. They waited for Toad to come out of the water.
“Please,” cried Frog, “please go away!” But no one went away.

    11
Toad was getting colder and colder.
He was beginning to shiver and sneeze.

    12
“I will have to come out of the water,” said Toad.
    “I am catching a cold.”
Toad climbed out of the river.

    13
The water dripped out of his bathing suit and down onto his feet.
    The turtle laughed.
    The lizards laughed.

    14
    The snake laughed.
    The field mouse laughed,
    and Frog laughed.
“What are you laughing at, Frog?” said Toad.
“I am laughing at you, Toad,” said Frog, “because you do look funny in your bathing suit.”
“Of course I do,” said Toad.
Then he picked up his clothes and went home.

FREDERICK by Leo Lionni Pantheon Books,
1.All along the meadow where the cows grazed and the horses ran, there was an old stone wall.
    2. In the wall, not far from the barn and the granary, a chatty family of field mice had their home.
    3. But the farmers had moved away, the barn was abandoned, and the granary stood empty. And since winter was not far off, the little mice began to gather corn and nuts and wheat and straw. They all worked day and night. All, except Frederick.
4.“Frederick, why don’t you work?” They asked.
      “I do work” said Frederick.
“I gather sun rays for cold dark winter days”
    5. And when they saw Frederick sitting there, staring at the meadow, they said, “ And now, Frederick?” “ I gather colours,” answered Frederick  simply. “ For winter is grey.”
    6. And once Frederick seemed half asleep. “ Are you dreaming?, Frederick?” They asked reproachfully. But Frederick said, “ Oh no,  I am  gathering words. For The winter days are long an many, an well run out of things to say.”
    7. The winter days came, and when the first snow fell the five little field mice took to their hideout in the stones.
    8. In the beginning there was lots to eat, and the mice told stories of foolish foxes and silly cats. They were a happy family.
    9. But little by little they had nibbled up most of the nuts an berries, the straw was gone, and the corn was only a memory. It was cold in the wall and no one felt like chatting.

    10. Then they remembered what Frederick has said about sun rays and colours and words.
“What about your supplies, Frederick” they asked.
    11. “Close your eyes, “ said Frederick , as he climbed on a big stone.
“ Now I send you the rays of the sun. Do you feel how their golden glow...”
And as Frederick  spoke of the sun the four little mice began to feel warmer.
Was it Frederick’s voice? Was it magic?
    12. “And how about colours, Frederick?” they asked anxiously.

“Close your eyes again, “ Frederick said. And when he told them of the blue periwinkles, the red poppies in the yellow wheat, and the green leaves of the berry bush, they saw the colours as clearly as if they had been painted in their minds.
    13. “And the words, Frederick?”
Frederick, cleared his throat, waited a moment, and then, as if from a stage, he said:    “Who scatters snowflakes? Who melts the ice?
Who spoils the weather? Who makes it nice?
Who grows the four-leaf clovers in June?
Who climes the daylight? Who lights the moon?
    14. Four little field mice who live in the sky.     Four little field mice....like you and I. ;

    15. One in the Sping mouse who turns on the showers.
Then comes the Summer who paints in the flowers.
The Fall mouse is next with walnuts and wheat.
And  Winter is last, with cold little feet.

    16. Aren't  we lucky the seasons are four?
Think of a year with one less or one more!”
    17. When  Frederick has finished, they all applauded, "But Frederick,"they said, "you are a poet." 18. Frederick blushed, took a bow, and said shyly, “ I know it.”

    Father Cat's Busy Day(《猫爸爸忙碌的一天》斯凯瑞故事书)
It is early morning.Father cat awakes as the sun comes up.
He looks out of the window."What a perfect day to put the boat in the water!"he says.
He goes downstairs to the kitchen and prepares breakfast for the family.
He brings Mother Cat a cup of coffee in bed.
Father Cat runs outside to his sailboat, parked beside the garage.
He pulls off the canvas cover, and tries to push the boat trailer into the driveway. But the trailer won't move.It has a flat tire.Ungh!
From the garage, Father Cat gets an air pump.Just then, Mother Cat comes up on her bicycle, holding a shopping list."I have to go the the

hairdresser,"she says."Could you please do the food shopping for me this morning?"
Then Huckle arrives with his bicycle, Sally with her tricycle, and Lowly with his scooter.Everyone needs air in the tires!
Finally,Father Cat can pump up the trailer tire.
Then he pulls the boat into the driveway.
But it's time to do the shopping.
The boat trailer is blocking the driveway!
Father Cat drives the Cat family car around the boat, onto the lawn, crushing a few bushes.Sorry, bushes! He also knocks over the mailbox.
At the supermarket, Father Cat realizes he has forgotten Mother Cat's shopping list.
He asks the children to each choose three items from each shopping aisle. That should please Mother Cat.
After the supermarket, the car needs some gas.Father Cat drives into Scotty's gas station.
While he fills up the car,Scotty takes a look at the car moter. He pulls out a few pieces and shows them to Father Cat.
"It's time to replace some parts!"Scotty tells Father Cat."Don't worry, it won't take long."
While Father Cat waits for his car to be repaired, he invites the children across the street for milkshakes.
Meanwhile, back at the Cat family house, the boat trailer has begun to roll down the driveway, and into the street.
Oh,no!Here comes Mr. Frumble in his picklecar!
"Who would sail a boat into the middle of the street!"Mr. Frumble says.
    Crash!!!!
Luckily,Mr. Fixit soon arrives on the scene.
With his crane,he removes Father Cat's boat out of harm's way. Then he tows away Mr. Frumble's broken picklecar.
"A good thing that you brought along a trailer, Mr.Frumble!"Mr. Fixit says.
Soon, the Cat family car is ready again. It looks like the ice-cream somebody chose at the supermaket has melted.
Now the car needs to go through the car wash.
At last, they are ready to drive home.Mother Cat must be wondering what has happened to them!
But instead, Mother Cat is wondering what has happened to her poor bushes and the mailbox.
Father Cat looks with surprise at the driveway.
"What has happened to my boat?"he asks.
"I know I left the boat in the driveway,"Father Cat tells Mother Cat."It has to be around here somewhere!"
"Well, before you begin to look,"says Mother Cat,"perhaps you first want to change out of your pyjamas!"

    kitten's first moon《小猫咪追月亮》

It was kitten’s first full moon.
    When she saw it,
    she thought,
There’s a little bowl of milk in the sky.
    And she wanted it.

    So she closed her eyes
    and stretched her neck
and opened her mouth and licked.

    But Kitten only ended up
with a bug on her tongue.
    Poor Kitten!

Still, there was the little bowl of milk, just waiting.

    So she pulled herself together
    and wiggled her bottom
and sprang from the top step
    of the porch.

    But Kitten only tumbled –
    bumping her nose
    and banging her ear
    and pinching her tail.

Still, there was the little bowl of milk, just waiting.

    So she chased it –
    down the sidewalk,
    through the garden,
    past the field,
    and by the pond.
    But Kitten never seemed
    to get closer.
    Poor Kitten!

Still, there was the little bowl of milk, just waiting.

    So she ran
    To the tallest tree
    She could find,
    and she climbed
    and climbed
    and climbed
    to the very top.

    But Kitten
    still couldn’t reach
    the bowl of milk,
    and now she was
    scared.
    Poor Kitten!
    What could she do!

Then, in the pond, Kitten saw
    Another bowl of milk.
    And it was bigger.
    What a night!

So she raced down the tree
    and raced through the grass

and raced to the edge of the pond.
She leaped with all her might –

    Poor Kitten!
    She was wet and sad
    and tired
    and hungry.

So she went back home –

and there was a great big bowl of milk on the porch,

    just waiting for her.

    Lucky Kitten!

    树非常好  A TREE IS NICE

Trees are very nice. They fill up the sky.

They go beside the rivers and down the valleys. They live up on the hills.

Trees make the woods. They make everything beautiful.

Even if you have just one tree,it is nice too.
A tree is nice beacuse it has leaves.
The leaves whisper in the breeze all summer long.

In the fall, the leaves come down and we play in them.We walk in the leaves
    and roll in the leaves.
We build playhouses out of the leaves. Then we pile them up with our rakes and have a bonfire.

A tree is nice because it has a trunk and limbs.
We can climb the tree and see over all the yards.
We can sit on a limb and think about things.
Or play pirate ship up in the tree.

If it is an apple tree we can climb it to pick the apples.

Cats get away from dogs by going up the tree.
Birds build nests in trees and live there.
Sticks come off the trees too.
We draw in the sand with the sticks.

A tree is nice to hang a swing in.
    Or a basket of flowers.
It is a good place to lean your hoe while you rest.

A tree is nice because it makes shade.
The cows lie down in the shade when it is hot.

    People have picnics there too.
And the baby takes his nap in his buggy in the shade.

A tree is nice for a house to be near.
The tree shades the house and keeps it cool.

The tree holds off the wind and keeps the wind from blowing the roof off the house sometimes.

A tree is nice to plant. You dig the biggest hole you can and put the little tree in.Then you pour in lots of water and then the dirt. You hang the shovel back in the garage.
Every day for years and YEARS you watch the little tree grow. You say to people,"I planted that tree."

They wish they had one so they go home and plant a tree too.

A chair for my mother 妈妈的红沙发

    《妈妈的红沙发》A chair for my mother
My mother works as a waitress in the Blue Tile Diner. After school sometimes I go to meet her there. Then her boss Josephine gives me a job too.

I wash the salts and peppers and fill the ketchups. One time I peeled all the onions for the onion soup. When I finish, Josephine says, "Good work, honey, " and pays me. And every time, I put half of my money into the jar.

I takes a long time to fill a jar this big. Every day when my mother comes home from work, I take down the jar. My mama empties all her change from tips out of her purse for me to count. Then we push all of the coins into the jar.

Sometimes my mama is laughing when she comes home from work. Sometimes she's so tired she falls asleep while I count the money out into piles. Some days she has lots of tips. Some days she has only a little. Then she looks worried. But each evening every single shiny coin goes into the jar.

We sit in the kitchen to count the tips. Usually Grandma sits with us too. While we count, she likes to hum. Often she has money in her old leather wallet for us. Whenever she gets a good bargain on tomatoes or bananas or something she buys, she puts by the savings and they go into the jar.
When we can't get a single other coin into the jar, we are going to take out all the money and go and buy a chair.

Yes, a chair. A wonderful, beautiful, fat, soft armchair. We will get one covered in velvet with roses all over it. We are going to get the best chair in the whole world.

That is because our old chairs burned up. There was a big fire in our other house. All our chairs burned. So did our sofa and so did everything else. That wasn't such a long time ago.

My mother and I were coming home from buying new shoes. I had new sandals. She had new pumps. We were walking to our house from the bus. We were looking at everyone's tulips. She was saying she liked red tulips and I was saying I liked yellow ones. Then we came to our block.

Right outside our house stood two big fire engines. I could see lots of smoke. Tall orange flames came out of the roof. All the neighbors stood in a bunch across the street. Mama grabbed my hand and we ran. My uncle Sandy saw us and ran to us. Mama yelled, "Where's Mother?" I yelled, "Where's my grandma?" My aunt Ida waved and shouted , "She's here, she's here. She's O.K. Don't worry."

Grandma was all right. Our cat was safe too, though it took a while to find her. But everything else in our whole house was spoiled.

What was left of the house was turned to charcoal and ashes.

We went to stay with my mother's sister Aunt Ida and Uncle Sandy. Then we were able to move into the apartment downstairs. We painted the walls yellow. The floors were all shiny. But the rooms were very empty.

The first day we moved in, the neighbors brought pizza and cake and ice cream. And they brought a lot of other things too.

The family across the street brought a table and three kitchen chairs. The very old man next door gave us a bed from when his children were little.

My other grandpa brought us his beautiful rug. My mother's other sister, Sally, had made us red and white curtains. Mama's boss, Josephine, brought pots and pans, silverware and dishes. My cousin brought me her own stuffed bear.

Everyone clapped when my grandma made a speech. "You are all the kindest people," she said, "and we thank you very, very much. It's lucky we're young and can start all over."

That was last year, but we still have no sofa and no big chairs. When Mama comes home, her feet hurt. "There's no good place for me to take a load off my feet," she says. When Grandma wants to sit back and hum and cut up potatoes, she has to get as comfortable as she can on a hard kitchen chair.

So that is how come Mama brought home the biggest jar she could find at the diner and all the coins started to go into the jar.

Now the jar is too heavy for me to lift down. Uncle Sandy gave me a quarter. He had to boost me up so I could put it in.

After supper Mama and Grandma and I stood in front of the jar. "Well, I never would have believed it, but I guess it's full," Mama said.

My mother brought home little paper wrappers for the nickels and the dimes and the quarters. I counted them all out and wrapped them all up.

On my mother's day off, we took all the coins to the bank. The bank exchanged them for ten-dollar bills. Then we took the bus downtown to shop for our chair.

We shopped through four furniture stores. We tried out big chairs and smaller ones, high chairs and low chairs, soft chairs and harder ones. Grandma said she felt like Goldilocks in "The Three Bears" trying out all the chairs.

Finally we found the chair we were all dreaming of. And the money in the jar was enough to pay for it. We called Aunt Ida and Uncle Sandy. They came right down in their pickup truck to drive the chair home for us. They knew we couldn't wait for it to be delivered.

I tried out our chair in the back of the truck. Mama wouldn't let me sit there while we drove. But they let me sit in it while they carried it up to the door.

We set the chair right beside the window with the red and white curtains. Grandma and Mama and I all sat in it while Aunt Ida took our picture.

Now Grandma sits in it and talks with people going by in the daytime. Mama sits down and watches the news on TV when she comes home from her job. After supper, I sit with her and she can reach right up and turn out the light if I fall asleep in her lap.

There once was a duck who had the bad luck to live with a lazy old farmer. The duck did the work.
The farmer stayed all day in bed .The duck fetched the cow from the field.
“How goes the work?” called the farmer. The duck answered,“Quack!”The duck brought thd sheep from the hill.“How goes the work?” called the farmer. The duck answered,“Quack!”The duck put the hens in their house.“How goes the work?” called the farmer. The duck answered,“Quack!”
The farmer got fat through staying in bed and the poor duck got fed up with working all day .“How goes the work?”“Quack!”“How goes the work?”“Quack!”“How goes the work?”“Quack!”“How goes the work?”“Quack!”“How goes the work?”“Quack!”“How goes the work?”“Quack!”
The poor duck was sleepy and weepy and tired. The hens and the cow and the sheep got very upset. They loved the duck. So they held a meeting under the moon and they made a plan for the moring .“Moo!”Said the cow.“Baa!”Said the sheep.“Cluck!”Said the hens. And that was the plan!It was just before dawn and the farmyard was still.Through the back door and into the house crept the cow and the sheep and the hens.
They stole down the hall. They creaked up the stairs. They squeezes under the bed of the farmer and wriggled about .
The bed started to rock and the farmer woke up ,And he calles,“How goes the work?”and… “Moo!” “Baa!”“Cluck!”
They lifted his bed and he started to shout, and they banged and they bounced the old farmer about and about and about, right out of the bed…And he fled with the cow and the sheep and the hensMooing and baaing and clucking around him.Down the lane…“Moo!”through the fields…“Baa!”over the hill…“Cluck!”and he never came back. The duck awoke and waddled wearily into the yard expecting to hear, “How goes the work?”But nobody spoke!
Then mooing and baaing and clucking and quacking they all set to work on their farm.

    DUCK ON A BIKE 鸭子骑自行车

DUCK ON A BIKE by David Shannon
One day down on the farm, Duck got a wild idea, "I bet I could ride a bike!" he thought, He waddled over to where the boy parked his bike, climbed on, and began to ride. At first he rode very slowly, and he wobbled a lot, but it was fun!
Duck rode past Cow and waved to her.
    "Hello, Cow!" said Duck.
"M-o-o-o," said Cow. But what she thought was,
"A duck on a bike? That's the silliest thing I've ever seen!"

    Then Duck rode past Sheep.
    "Hello, Sheep!" said Duck.
"B-a-a-a," said Sheep. But what she thought was,
"He's going to hurt himself if he's not careful!"

    Duck was riding better now.
    He rode past Dog,
    "Hello, Dog!" said Duck.
"Woof!"said Dog. But what he thought was,
"That is a mighty neat trick!"

    Then Duck rode past Cat.
    "Hello, Cat!" said Duck.
"Meow," said Cat. But what she thought was,
"I wouldn't waste my time riding a bike!"

    Duck pedaled a little faster.
    He rode past Horse.
    "Hello, Horse!" said Duck.
    "Ne-e-e-igh!" said Horse.
But what he thought was ,
"You're still not as fast as me, Duck!"

Duck rang his bell as he rode toward Chicken.
    "Hello, Chicken!" said Duck.
"Cluck! Cluck!"said Chicken. But what she thought was,
"Watch where you're going , Duck!"
    Then Duck rode past Goat.
    "Hello, Goat!" said Duck.
"M-a-a-a" said Goat. But what he thought was,
"I'd like to eat that bike!"

Duck stood on the seat and rode past Pig and Pig.
    "Hello, Pigs!" said Duck.
    "Oink," said Pig and Pig.
    But what they thought was,
    "Duck is such a show-off!"

Then Duck rode no-hands past Mouse.
    "Hello, Mouse!" said Duck.
"Squeak," said Mouse. But what he thought was,
"I wish I could ride a bike just like Duck."

Suddenly, a whole bunch of kids came down the road on bikes. They were in such a hurry that they didn't see Duck.
They parked their bikes by the house and went inside.

Now all the animals had bikes! They rode around and around the barnyard.
"This is fun!" they all said.
    "Good  idea, Duck!"

Then they put the bikes back by the house.
And no one knew that on that afternoon, there had been a cow,
    a sheep, a dog, a cat, a horse, a chicken, a goat, two pigs, a mouse, and a duck on a bike.
    -----The End---

爱是一捧浓浓的蜂蜜love is a handful of honey   by Giles Andreae

Love is that high-flying feeling that makes you leap out of your bed.

Love is what makes you throw open the curtains and somersault 'round on your head.

Love is that warm cozy feeling, a cuddle that tells you you're sweet.

And love is that feeling of laughing out loud when somebody tickles your feet.

Love is skipping out in the morning and hoping the day never ends.

And love's what you feel when you all get together and go on adventures with friends.

Love's when you hide in the forest in places that nobody knows.

Love is that fluttery feeling you feel when a butterfly flies on your toes.

Love is a handful of honey and love's making friends with the bees,

even the flowers are bursting with love, when they're dancing about in the breeze.

And then when your stomachs are grumbly, love is unwrapping your treats,

and love's stuffing everything all in at once, leaving masses of mess on your cheeks.

Love is splish-splashing through puddles and love's getting soaked in the rain.

Love is a rainbow that bursts through the sky when the sun begins shining again.

Love's when you can't stop describing just what you've been doing all day,

and love is when somebody quietly listens to everything you've got to say.

Love is a great bedtime story that takes you to faraway lands,

and love's when you want to show someone you care so you snuggle up and hold hands.

Love's looking out of the window to wave at the man in the moon,

and love's when you whisper goodnight to the stars who'll be watching you dream very soon.

And then when you're tired and sleepy, and you're cozily tucked up all tight,

Love is that last little cuddle and kiss that helps you sleep safe through the night.

    Good night.

    the dot  点

Art class was over, but vashti glued to her chair.
    Her paper was empty.

Vashti’s teacher leaned over the blank paper.
‘ah.’ A polar bear in a snow storm,’ she said.
‘very funny!” said vashti. I just can’t draw!”
her teacher smiled. “ Just make a mark and see where it takes you.”
Vashti grabbed a marker and gave the paper a good, strong jab.
    “there!”
her teacher picked up the paper and studied it carefully.
    “Hmmmmm.”
She pushed the paper toward vashti and quietly said,
    “Now sign it.”
    Vashti thought for a moment.
“well, maybe I can’t draw, but I CAN sign my name.”
The next week, when vashti walked into art class,
she was surprised to see what was hanging above her teacher’s desk.
It was the little dot she had drawn – HER DOT!
    All framed in swirly gold!
“Hmmph! I can make a better dot than THAT!”
She opened her never-before-used set of watercolors and set to work.
Vashti painted and painted. A red dot. A purple dot. A yellow dot. A blue dot.
The blue mixed with the yellow. She discovered that she could make a GREEN dot.
Vashti kept experimenting. Lots of little dots in many colors.
“If I can make little dots, I can make BIG dots, too.”
Vashti splashed her colors with a bigger brush on bigger paper to make bigger dots.
Vashti even made a dot by NOT painting a dot.
At the school art show a few weeks later, vashti’s many dots made quite a splash.
Vashti noticed a little boy gazing up at her.
“you’re a really great artist. I wish I could draw.” he said.
“I bet you can,’ said vashti.
“ME? No, not me. I can’t draw a straight line a ruler.”
Vashti smiled. She handed the boy a blank sheet of paper. “show me.”
The boy’s pencil shook as he drew his line.
Vashti stared at the boy’s squiggle.
    And then she said…
    “sign it.”

WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE 野兽出没的地方

    Where the Wild Things Are
The night Max wore his wolf suit and made mischief
of one kind and another, his mother called him “wild thing!” and Max said “I’ll eat you up!”
so he was sent to bed without eating anything.
That very night in Max’s room a forest grew
    and grew and grew
until his ceiling hung with vines and the walls became the world all around,
and an ocean tumbled by with a private boat for Max,
and he sailed off through night and day and in and out of weeks,
and almost over a year to where the wild things are.
And when he came to the place where the wild things are,
they roared their terrible roars and
gnashed their terrible teeth and rolled their terrible eyes
    and showed their terrible claws
till Max said, “Be still!” and tamed them with the magic trick of -
staring into all their yellow eyes without blinking once and
they were frightened and called him the most wild thing of all
and made him King of All Wild Things.
“And now,” cried Max, “Let the wild rumpus start!”
“Now stop!” Max said and sent the wild things off to bed without their supper. And Max, the King of All Wild Things, was lonely and wanted to be where someone loved him best of all.
Then all around, from far away across the world, he smelled good things to eat, so he gave up being king of where the wild things are.
But the wild things cried, “Oh, please don’t go! We’ll eat you up, we love you so!” And Max said, “No.”
The wild things roared their terrible roars and gnashed their terrible teeth and
rolled their terrible eyes and showed their terrible claws, but Max stepped into
his private boat and waved goodbye and sailed back,
over a year and in and out of weeks and through a day
and into the night of his very own room,
where he found his supper waiting for him
    and it was still hot.

    my friend rabbit 我的兔子朋友

    My friend rabbit means well.
    But what ever he does,
    Wherever he goes,
    trouble follows.
    “not to worry, mouse.
    I’ve got an idea!”
The plane was just out of reach.
Rabbit said, “not to worry, Mouse,
    I’ve got an idea.”
    So rabbit held squirrel
    and squirrel held me
    but then…
    the animals were not happy.
    But rabbit means well.
    And he is my friend.
    And he is my friend.
Even if, what ever he does,

    布朗家的天才宝宝Baby Brains

    布朗家的天才宝宝Baby Brains
    by Simon James

In the months before Baby Brains was born Mrs Brains was very busy.
She read out loud every night to the baby inside her tummy.

she played music and languages on headphones to her baby during the day.
Mr and Mrs Brains wanted to make sure their baby was going to be very clever.
They even turned up the television when the news came on.

Mr and Mrs Brains were very excited when their baby was born. It was a boy.
"Our very own Baby Brains," said Mr Brains proudly.
When they brought him home from hospital Mrs Brains laid him down in the brand-new cot.
"Sleep tight, Baby Brains," she whispered.

The next morning, Mrs Brains was on her way to get breakfast when she heard some strange noises in the living-room.

Mrs Brains opened the door to see her baby sitting on the sofa, reading the morning paper.

By the afternoon Baby Brains was helping mend the car. "We've certainly got a bright one here!" said Mr Brains.
That evening, Baby Brains spoke his first words... "I'd like to go to school tomorrow," he said.

The next day Baby Brains visited the local school. He sat down with the children and answered all the questions. The children were amazed.

At the end of the afternoon the teacher thanked Baby Brains. "I don't think I've ever learnt so much in one day," she said.
On the way home Baby Brains said he wanted to go to university and study medicine.

After just two weeks Baby Brains began working as a doctor at the local hospital. He was very popular with all the staff and patients.

Word soon spread about the extraordinary Baby Brains. Everyone wanted to meet him.
One night some space scientists phoned. They asked if Baby Brains would like to help with their next space mission.

The following day Mr and Mrs Brains and baby travelled out to the space centre. After training hard over the weekend...

Baby Brains waved goodbye to Mr and Mrs Brains and blasted off into outer space.

Everyone in the world held their breath as they watched Baby Brains take his first space walk.
"Tell us how you feel on this special occasion," radioed Ground Control.

Baby Brains looked up at the vast starlit sky above him.
He looked down at the vast starlit sky below him.
He looked at the whole world in front of him and mumbled something.
"We can't quite hear you," radioed Ground control. "Could you repeat that?"

"I want my mummy!" wailed Baby Brains.

"That's enough!" Mrs Brains yelled to the space controller.
"Bring my baby home right now!"

Baby Brains was flown home as quickly as possible.
He felt very embarrassed as he stepped down from the hatch.

But, through the crowd of photographers and cameramen, Mrs Brains came running.

"Our beautiful little baby," signed Mrs Brains, as she lifted him high into the air.
"Our brave little baby," said Mr Brains.
"Can we go home?" said Baby Brains.

At home Mrs Brains gave Baby Brains a warm bath, which made him feel a lot better.
Mr Brains tickled him, which made him laugh.

And Mrs Brains sang Baby Brains to sleep.
Then they gently laid him down in the brand-new cot.
It was good to have their baby home again.
"Our very own Baby Brains," whispered Mrs Brains.

From that day on, Baby Brains spent most of his time at home doing the things that most babies do.
    Except, that is, at weekends...

when he still liked to help out at the local hospital.

    Little Snowflake's Big Adventure
    ---by Steve Metzger

It was winter once again. The Little Snowflake and his friends were sitting in a big, gray cloud. They were getting ready to fall to the ground.

"I hope I land in a big skating rink," said Susie Snowflake.

    "Me, too," said Frozen Freddie.

"Why?" asked the Little Snowflake. " What's so special about a skating rink?"

"That's where people go slipping and sliding on a circle of ice," replied Susie Snowflake." I want to do that, too."

"That sounds like fun!" the Little Snowflake said.

Suddenly, the north wind blew all the snowflakes out of the big, gray cloud. At first, the Little Snowflake, Frozen Freddie, and Susie Snowflake were stuck together as they fell.

"Hey, this is great!" the Little Snowflake said. Gliding from side to side, they giggled as they drifted toward the ground.

All at once, another gust of wind blew the snowflakes apart and sent them in different directions.

"Good-bye,"the Little Snowflake called out. I hope I see them later, he thought.

The Little Snowflake began doing somersaults in the air. " Thirteen, fourteen, fifteen," he counted as hefell.

A moment later, he felt something sharp.

"Ouch!" the Little Snowflake shouted as he landed on top of a pine tree.

Then he heard," Hi, who are you?" It was the friendly voice of another snowflake.

"I'm the Little Snowflake," he said. " What's your name?"

"I'm Patty," she said. " I lost one of my points when I landed on this tree."

"That's all right, "the Little Snowflake said. " You look fine to me."

" She doesn't have six points," another snowflake said in a loud voice.

    " She's not a real snowflake."

    Patty began to cry.

"She is too a real snowflake," the Little Snowflake said, " just like you and me."

"NO, she isn't!" the mean snowflake said. Just then, a cardinal landed on a branch, shaking it up and down.

The mean snowflake lost his balance and slipped off.

"Hey!" he said, falling toward the ground. "I liked sitting on that tree."

"I won't miss that guy," the Little Snowflake said.

"He wasn't very nice," said Patty. " Am I really still a snowflake?" she asked as she stopped crying.

"Absolutely!" the Little Snowflake smiled at each other.

"Look! There's the ice-skating rink!" the Little Snowflake said." Do you want to go skating?" We can slip and slide and have lots of fun!"

"Sure," Patty said. " Let's go!"

The Little Snowflake and Patty jumped off the pine tree together.

    "Whee!"

A gust of wind blew them onto something that was hard and smooth and very cold.

    "What's this?" Patty asked.

The Little Snowflake looked down and saw his reflection.

"We've landed on the ice!" he said to Patty. "Now we can play!"

The Little Snowflake and Patty laughed as they slid together.

Suddenly, they heard a scraping sound coming closer and closer to them. It was an ice-skater with red mittens. Her skates were just about to crash into the Little Snowflake and Patty! At the last possible moment, the two snowflakes jumped up and landed on the tip of one of her skates.
"Whew," the Little Snowflake said. " That was close."

"Hold on tight," Patty said as the ice-skater went faster and faster.

The Little Snowflake and Patty enjoyed watched the other skaters go by. Sometimes they saw skaters slip and fall down.

"Oops, there goes another one," Patty said.

All of a sudden, the skater with red mittens swerved to avoid a little boy. She struggled to keep her balance, but she couldn't. The Little Snowflake and Patty went zooming through the air. They flew out of the ice-skating rink and landed, WHAM, right on a frozen puddle.

"All you all right?" Patty asked the Little Snowflake.

"I'm fine," he answered. Then the Little Snowflake looked around and saw SUSIE Snowflake and Frozen Freddie. "Hey! It's my old friends."

Patty was happy to meet Susie and Freddy.

"Look where we are!" the Little Snowflake said.

"What's so special about a frozen puddle?" Susie Snowflake asked.

"It can be our very own ice-skating rink," the Little Snowflake replied.

"Now skaters can't crash into us."

"Watch me!" Patty said as she did figure eights on the frozen puddle.

"Now it's my turn,"Frozen Freddie said as he began to skate backward. He was doing fine until he bumped into a stick.

Susie Snowflake did ballerina spins and the Little Snowflake leaped through the air.

"I'm having so much fun!" Frozen Freddie said. "But I'm getting tired."

"Let's do one big trick," the Little Snowflake said, "before we stop."

They decided to climb on top of one another until they were four snowflakes high. With the Little Snowflake on the bottom and Patty on top, they wibbled and wobbled across the frozen puddle. After a few minutes, they lost their balance and fell all over the ice. "The snowflake friends laughed and laughed.

"This is the best day I've ever had!" the Little Snowflake said with his biggest smile. "What a great adventure!"

    The Story of Babar

In the great forest a little elephant is born.
His name is Babar. His mother loves him very much.
She rocks him to sleep with her trunk while singing softly to him.

    Babar has grown bigger.
He now plays with the other little elephants.

He is a very good little elephant. See him digging in the sand with his shell .

Babar is riding happily on his mother’s back when a wicked hunter behind some bushes, shoots at them.

The hunter has killed Babar’s mother! The monkey hides, the birds fly away, Babar cries. The hunter runs up to catch poor Babar.

So many things are new to him! The broad streets! The automobiles and buses! However, he is especially interested in two gentlemen he notices on the street.

He says to himself: “Really, they are very well dressed. I would like to have some fine clothes, too! I wonder how I can get them?”

Luckily, a very rich Old Lady who has always been fond of little elephants understands right away that he is longing for a fine suit. As she likes to make people happy, she gives him her purse. Babar says to her politely: “Thank you, Madam.”

Without wasting any time, Babar goes into a big store. He enters the elevator. It is such fun to ride up and down in this funny box, that he rides all the way up ten times and all the way down ten times. He did not want to stop but the elevator boy finally said to him: “This is not a toy, Mr. Elephant. You must get out and do your shopping. Look, here is the floorwalker.”

    Babar then

    buys himself:
And here is his photograph .

Babar dines with his friend the Old Lady.
She thinks he looks very smart in his new clothes.
After dinner, because he is tired, he goes to bed and falls asleep very quickly.
Babar now lives at the Old Lady’s house. In the morning, he does setting-up exercises with her, and then he takes a bath. He goes out for an automobile ride every day.

A learned professor gives him lessons. Babar pays attention and does well in his work. He is a good pupil and makes rapid progress.

In the evening, after dinner, he tells the Old Lady’s friends all about his life in the great forest.
However, Babar is not quite happy, for he misses playing in the great forest with his little cousins and his friends, the monkeys.
He often stands at the window, thinking sadly of his childhood, and cries when he remembers his mother.

Two years have passed. One day during his walk he sees two little elephants coming toward him. They have do clothes on. “Why,” he says in astonishment to the Old Lady,”It’s Arthur and Celeste, my little cousins!”

The mothers of Arthur and Celeste have come to the town to fetch them. They are very happy to have them back, but they scold them just the same because they ran away.

It poisoned him and he became ill, so ill that he died. This was a great calamity.

After the funeral the three oldest elephants were holding a meeting to choose a new King.

Then Cornelius, the oldest of all the elephants, spoke in his quavering voice: “My good friends, we are seeking a King. Why not choose Babar? He has just returned from the big city, he has learned so much living among men, let us crown him King.”
All the other elephants thought that Cornelius had spoken wisely and eagerly they await Babar’s reply.
“I want to thank you one and all,” said Babar, “but before accepting your proposal, I must explain to you that, while we were traveling in the car, Celeste and I became engaged. If I become your King, she will be your Queen.”
    “Long live Queen Celeste!
Long live King Babar!” cry all the elephants without a moment’s hesitation. And thus it was that Babar became King.

“You have good ideas,” said Babar to Cornelius. “I will therefore make you a general, and when I get my crown, I will give you my hat. In a week I shall marry Celeste. We will then have a splendid party in honor of our marriage and our coronation.” Then, turning to the birds, Babar asks them to go and invite all the animals to the festivities, and he tells the dromedary to go to the town and buy some beautiful wedding clothes.

The wedding guests begin to arrive.
The dromedary returns with the bridal costumes just in the nick of time for the ceremony.

After the wedding and the coronation

    everybody dances merrily.

The festivities are over, night has fallen, the stars have risen in the sky.
King Babar and Queen Celeste are indeed very happy.

Now the world is asleep. The guests have gone home, happy, though tired from too much dancing. They will long remember this great celebration.
