The mitten
Adapted and illustrated by JAN BRETT
Once there was a boy named Nicki who wanted his new mittens made from wool as white as snow.
At first, his grandmother, Baba, did not want to knit white mittens.
"If you drop one in the snow," she warned," you'll never find it."
But Nicki wanted snow-white mittens, and finally Baba made them.
After she finished she said," When you come home, first I will look to see if you are safe and sound, but then I will look to see if you still have your snow-white mittens."
So off
Nicki went. And it wasn't long until one of his new mittens dropped in the snow and was left behind.
A mole, tired from tunneling along, discovered the mitten and burrowed inside. It was cozy and warm and just the right size, so he decided to stay.
A snowshoe rabbit came hopping by. He stopped for a moment to admire his winter coat. It was then that he saw the mitten, and he wiggled in, feet first. The mole didn't think there was room for both of them, but when he saw the rabbit's big kickers he moved over.
Next a hedgehog came snuffling along. Having spent the day looking under wet leaves for things to eat, he decided to move into the mitten and warm himself. The mole and the rabbit were bumped and jostled, but not being ones to argue with someone covered with prickles, they made room.
As soon as the hedgehog disappeared into the mitten, a big owl, attracted by the commotion, swooped down. When he decided to move in also, the mole, the rabbit, and the hedgehog grumbled. But when they saw the owl's glinty talons, they quickly let him in.
Up through the snow appeared a badger. He eyed the mitten and began to climb in. The mole, the rabbit, the hedgehog, and the owl were not pleased. There was no room left, but when they saw his diggers, they gave him the thumb.
It started snowing, but the animals were snug in the mitten. A waft of warm steam rose in the air, and a fox trotting by stopped to investigate. Just the sight of the
cozy mitten made him feel drowsy. The fox poked his muzzle in. When the mole, the rabbit, the hedgehog, the owl, and the badger saw his shiny teeth, they gave the fox lots of room.
A great bear lumbered by. He spied the mitten all plumped up. Not being one to be left out in the cold, he began to nose his way in. The animals were packed in as tightly as could be. But what animal would argue with a bear?
The mitten swelled and stretched. It was pulled and bulged to many times its size. But Baba's good knitting held fast.
Along came a meadow mouse, no bigger than an acorn. She wriggled into the one space left, and made herself comfortable on top of the great bear's nose.
The bear, tickled by the mouse's whiskers, gave an enormous sneeze.
Aaaaa-aaaaa-aaaaa-ca-chew!
The force of the sneeze shot the mitten up into the sky, and scattered the animals in all directions.
On his way home, Nicki saw a white shape in the distance. It was the lost mitten silhouetted against the blue sky.
As he ran to catch his snow-white mitten, he saw Baba's face in the window. First she looked to see if he was safe and sound, and then she saw that he still had his new mittens.

Clifford--My Best Friend
Cleo: Shiver me timbers and ahoy, mates. Pirates off the starboard bow.
T-bone: Pirates? Where?
Clifford: Don't worry T-bone. It’s just pretend.
T-bone: I knew that.
Cleo: Man the ears. Full speed ahead.
T-bone: Whoa! Whoa! I wish Clifford had seatbelts.
Cleo: Slow down, big guy.
Clifford: School's almost out, Cleo. I want to see Emily Elizabeth.
Miss Carrington: Now, remember, class. Monday, we'll have Show and Tell. You may each bring in something you'd like to share with the rest of the class.
Charley: I’m going to bring something from Jamaica.
Emily: Great idea, Charley.
Jetta: I’m going to bring something really amazing.
Miss Carrington: Good for you, Jetta. We're all looking forward to that. I’m sure.
Everyone: Here comes Clifford.
Miss Carrington: Well then, I guess it must be time to go home.
Everyone: Ha ha ha ha!
Miss Carrington: I know it must be time to go home.
Emily: Jetta's not the only one who's going to bring something special for Show and Tell. This metal detector is going to help us find something really cool. It beeps when it gets near something metal like buried gold or piles of silver.
Metal detector: Beep..beep..beep
Emily: Clifford. I found something. Something's buried here. Come on, let's dig.
Emily: Wow! Cool! An anchor. My class is going to love this.
Emily! Emily! Emily! Emily!
Emily: I can't wait till Monday. Yahoo!
Jetta: Hurry, Machiavelli, we're late. What is that?
Emily: Hey, Jetta! Look at this anchor we found. Isn't it cool?
Jetta: Looks just like the one I brought to Show and Tell last year.
Emily: You did?
Jetta: Oh, but I’m sure everyone will just love to see another one.
Emily: Oh.
Jetta: Well, we're off to meet the ferry. Mother found the most absolutely amazing thing on the main land for my Show and Tell project. Come on, Mac. Mac!
Clifford: Mac, Jetta's calling you.
Mac: Clifford, my friend, watch and learn.
Jetta: Mac! Machi!
Clifford: Why don't you go, Mac?
Jetta: Mac, get over here!
Mac: Wait for it.
Jetta: Oh, Mac, who wants a tummy yummy?
Mac: Ha, you see, the tummy yummy is mine.
Jetta: See you on Monday, Emily Elizabeth.
Emily: Come on, Clifford. We're going to find something absolutely amazing, too, aren't we? This island has lots of amazing things somewhere----but not up here.
Emily: Whoa, where are we going? Wow, an old bird's nest. This must be from last spring. There's even some feathers and old egg shells inside. This will be great for Show and Tell.
Emily: Clifford, no! Oh! Good boy! Now, let's get this nest home.
(Clifford sneezed) Oh, Clifford.
Emily: Maybe Mom has something in her shop I can use. You stay here, Clifford. Clifford?
Woman: That Clifford, what a dog!
Emily: Ha ha ha!
Emily: I’m going to go see what I can dig up inside. I’ll be right back.
Clifford: Hey, maybe I can dig up something for Emily, too. Digging's one of my best things.
Jetta: Is that a coral, Emily Elizabeth?
Emily: It sure is.
Jetta: What a coincidence! I have something made of coral, too. Wait till you see it! It’s a real treasure!
Jetta: Tada! It’s me! Isn't it absolutely amazing?
Emily: It certainly is.
Mac: Hmm, it certainly is.
Jetta: It’s perfect for Show and Tell, don't you think? What are you bringing?
Emily: Oh ah, I’m bringing a real treasure of my own.
Jetta: Is that your treasure, Emily Elizabeth?
Emily: Ah, yeah, sure.
Jetta: What is it? Let's see.
Jetta: Bones? Your treasure is a pile of bones?
Mac: Now, that's a real treasure!
Emily: Well, ah, yeah.
Jetta: Ha ha ha
Emily: You know, Jetta, a pile of bones is a real treasure to Clifford.
Jetta: Whatever! Come on, Mac. Let's go. I said, come on!
Emily: Clifford, you stay home now. Sorry but I have to find something for Show and Tell. Thanks but I need something amazing like Jetta's sculpture. I don't have time now, Clifford. Stay!
Clifford: Ooh!
Emily: Don't worry, boy, I’ll be right back.
Emily?
Clifford, did you see?
Oops!
Charley: Hey, Emily!
Emily: Hi, Charley! So, did you find something for Show and Tell?
Charley: Oh, yeah, I’m bringing my favorite steel jar from Jamaica.
Emily: Everyone's already seen that.
Charley: So, it's my best thing. What would you bring?
Emily: I don't know. Clifford and I went to look for something this morning.
Charley: Find anything?
Emily: No, not really, just this crummy old anchor. Clifford turned it into a swing, then we found this old nest, way up on rocky point.
Charley: Cool!
Emily: Then, we looked around town and Clifford tried on those silly glasses at Mr. Myori's shop.
Charley: Ha ha ha! It sounds fun.
Emily: Yeah, it was fun. I always have fun with Clifford.
Charley: He's a very cool dog. Emily: He sure is.
Charley: See you, Emily. Hope you figure out something for Show and Tell.
Emily: Thanks, Charley. I think I just did.
Emily: Clifford! Clifford! I know what I’m bringing for Show and Tell, Clifford. I know. It’s you, Clifford.
Jetta: I knew you're going to bring that big old dog for Show and Tell.
Emily: Of course, he's absolutely amazing. He's Clifford, my big red dog.
Clifford!
It’s story time.
You want to hear a Speckle story, don't you?
I thought so. He's your favorite.
Today's story is Speckle and the rainy day.
One day Speckle went walking in the rain.
He walked past Darnel trying to stay dry.
Speckle invited Darnel to join him under his umbrella.
Then Speckle saw Luna and he invited him to join her under the umbrella too.
As they walked by the brook, they spied Robbie and Riva.
But there was no more room under Speckle's umbrella.
So Speckle invited everyone to climb in and they all floated downstream in their umbrella boat, happy and laughing together.
The end
That was a great story. Isn't reading fun?

Long Live Princess Smartypants 顽皮公主万万岁
Long Live Princess Smartypants
Smartypants , Princess of Totaloonia, loved playing with baby dragons.
It would be nice to have a baby of my own, she thought…
As long as I don’t have to marry some dumb prince!
She asked her parents if it was possible to have a baby without being married.
“Certainly Not!” said her mother, the queen, who was busy knitting for her forthcoming art exhibition.
“And,”, She added, “I’m putting you in charge of the banquet for the Grand Opening of my show. Make sure there’s plenty of Royal Brown Gravy. The guest will love it!”
Princess Smartypants hated cooking, so she phoned the royal grocer for a packet of ready-mix brown gravy.
But the line was a bit crackly…
Yes, your totalooniness, One packet of ready-mix Brown baby on the way! Said the grocer.
Princess Smartypants was in a hurry. She didn’t read the label; she just followed the instructions on the back.
1. Mix contents with half a litre of milk.
2. Stir violently over a red-hot heat.
3. Add plenty of pepper.
4. Leave to “rise” under a damp cloth.
The result was incredible!
Princess Smartypants forgot about the gravy!
She was delighted with her new baby..althouth he did seem unusually strong for his age.
The baby wrecked the exhibition. The royal dignitaries all fled in terror- except for her wicked uncle…
The eveil Count Rottenghut!
He snatched the baby…
And made off for Castle creep, home of the despicable Prince Swashbuckle.
The prince had never forgiven Smartypants for refusing to marry him and turing him into a toad!
With Rottengut;s help, he had been plotting to take over Totaloonia ever since.
They thought the baby would be just the secret weapon they needed!
“What a delightful child,” drooled Prince Swashbuckle.”You have done well, my friend.”
Princess Smartypants summoned her mighty dragons.” We must rescue my baby!” she commanded. “He is dangerous in the wrong hands!”.”I know what a responsibility babies are,” said Amazonia Sizzleflame, “I’ve had 3000!”
So , with Amazonia in the lead, the squadron of dragons zoomed off.
The dragons breathed their fiery breath upon the castle until it glowed red hot! Its evil occupants ran out and were captured at once.
Smartypants and Amazonia flew in through one window and out of another, grabbing the baby on the way.
“There you are,” said Smartypants to her parents, “I hae saved Totaloonia from deadly peril!”
“Oh good, ” said her mother. “I’m glad you’re so brave, because you can rule…”
While we take my exhibition on a world tour. And don’t let that dreadful child destroy the kingdom while we’ve away!”
Princess Smartypants soon found out that it was much easier to rule the kingdom that the baby…
Now that he knew his own strength, he was rapidly becoming the palace pest!
“Perhaps some people are just not cut out to have babies,” she sighed.
Then Princess Smartypants had a brilliant idea! She asked Amazonia Sizzleflame if she could have one of her eggs.
“Of course,” said Amazonia. “I’ve got far too many. Don’t forget. You must sleep on it for a week.”
Poor Princess Smartypants didn’t sleep a wink for a week!
But it was worth it!
The baby was very respectful of his new brothers, Pongo and Bongo, and he never misbehaved again!
So when her parents rang to ask how the ruling was going, Princess Smartypants could honestly say, “I’ve got every little thing under control!”

Frog and toad 6- Down the Hill
6- Down the Hill
Frog knocked at Toad’s door.
“Toad, wake up.” he cried.
“Come out and see how wonderful the winter is!”
“I will not,” said Toad.
“I am in my warm bed.”
“Winter is beautiful,” said Frog.
“Come out and have fun.”
“Blah,” said Toad.
“I do not have any winter clothes.”
Frog came into the house.
“I have brought you some things to wear,” he said.
Frog pushed a coat down over the top of Toad.
Frog pulled snow pants up over the bottom of Toad.
He put a hat and scarf on Toad’s head.
“Help!” cried Toad.
“My best friend is trying to kill me!”
“I am only getting you ready for winter.” Said Frog.
Forg and Toad went outside.
They tramped through the snow.
“We will ride down this big hill on my sled,” said Frog.
“Not me.” said Toad.
“Do not be afraid.” Said Frog.
“I will be with you on the sled.
It will be a fine, fast ride. Toad, you sit in front.
I will sir right behind you.”
The sled began to move down the hill.
“Here we go!” said Frog.
There was a bump.
Frog fell off the sled.
Toad rushed past trees and rocks.
“Forg, I am glad that you are here.” said Toad.
Toad leaped over a snowbank.
“I could not steer the sled without you, Forg.” He said.
“You are right. Winter is fun!”
A crow flew nearby.
“Hello Crow.” Shouted Toad.
“Look at Forg and me.
We can ride a sled better than anybody in the world!”
“But Toad,” said the crow,
“You are alone on the sled.”
Toad looked around. He saw that Frog was not there.
“IAMALLALONE!” screamed Toad.
Bang! The sled hit a tree. Thud! The sled hit a rock. Plop!
The sled dived into the snow.
Frog came running down the hill.
He pulled Toad out of the snow.
“I saw everything.” Said Frog.
“You did very well by yourself.”
“I did not,” said Toad.
“But there is one thing that I can do all by myself.”
“What is that:” asked Forg.
“I can go home.” said Toad.
“Winter may be beautiful, but bed is much better.”

Frog and toad 7- The Corner
7- The Corner
Frog and Toad were caught in the rain.
They ran to Frog’s house.
“I am all wet,” said Toad.
“The day is spoiled.”
“Have some tea and cake.” said Frog.
“The rain will stop. If you stand near the stove,
Your clothes will soon be dry.
I will tell you a story while we are waiting,” said Frog.
“Oh, good,” said Toad.
“When I was small, not much bigger than a pollywog,” said Frog,
“My father said to me, “Son, this is a cold, gray day , but spring is just around the corner.”
I wanted spring to come,
I went out to find that corner.
I walked down a path in the woods until I came to a corner.
I went around the corner to see if spring was on the other side.”
“And was it?” asked Toad.
“No,” said Frog.
“There was only a pine tree, three pebbles and some dry grass.
I walked in the meadow.
Soon I came to another corner,
I went around the corner to see if spring was there.”
“Did you find it?” asked Toad.
“No,” said Frog.
“There was only an old worm asleep on a tree stump.”
“I walked along the river until I came to another corner.
I went around the corner to look for spring.”
“Was it there?” asked Toad.
“No,” said Frog.
“There was only some wet mud and a lizard who was chasing his tail.’
“You must have been tired,” said Toad.
“I was tired,” said Frog,“and it started to rain.”
“I went back home. When I got there,” said Frog,
“I found another corner.
It was the corner of my house.”
“Did you go around it?” asked Toad.
“I went around that corner, too.” said Frog.
“What did you see?” asked Toad.
“I saw the sun coming out,” said Frog.
“I saw birds sitting and singing in a tree.
I saw my mother and father working in their garden.
I saw flowers in the garden.”
“You found it!” cried Toad.
“Yes,” said Frog. “I was very happy,
I had found the corner that spring was just around.”
“Look, Frog.” said Toad.
“You were right, the rain has stopped.”
Frog and Toad hurried outside.
They ran around the corner of Frog’s house to make sure that spring had come again.

Frog and toad 8-Ice Cream
8-Ice Cream
One hot summer day Frog and Toad sat by the pond.
“I wish we had some sweet, cold ice cream,” said Frog.
“What a good idea,” said Toad.
“Wait right here, Frog. I will be back soon.”
Toad went to the store.
He bought two big ice-cream cones.
Toad licked one of the cones.
“Frog likes chocolate best,” said Toad,
“and so do I.”
Toad walked along the path.
A large, soft drop of chocolate ice cream slipped down his arm.
“This ice cream is melting in the sun,” said Toad.
Toad walked faster.
Many drops of melting ice cream flew through the air.
They fell down on Toad’s head.
“I must hurry back to Frog!” he cried.
“I must hurry back to Frog!” he cried.
More and more of the ice cream was melting.
It dripped down on Toad’s jacket.
It splattered on his pant and on his feet.
“Where is the path?” cried Toad.
“I cannot see!”
Frog sat by the pond waiting for Toad.
A Mouse ran by.
“I just saw something awful!” cried the mouse.
“It was big and brown!”
“Something covered with sticks and leaves is moving this way!” cried a squirrel.
“Here comes a thing with horns!” shouted a rabbit.
“Run for your life!”
“What can it be?” asked Frog.
Frog hid behind a rock.
He saw the thing coming.
It was big and brown.
It was covered with sticks and leaves.
It had two horns.
“Forg,” cried the thing.
“Where are you?”
“Good heavens!” said Frog.
“That thing is Toad!”
Toad fell into the pond.
He sank to the bottom and came up again.
“Drat,” said Toad.
“All of our sweet, cold ice cream has washed away.”
“Never mind,” said Frog.
“I know what we can do.”
Frog and Toad quickly ran back to the store.
Then they sat in the shade of a large tree and ate their chocolate ice-cream cones together

It was October.
The leaves had falled off the trees, They were lying on the ground.
“I will go to Toad’s house,” said Frog.
“I will go to Toad’s house,” said Frog.
“I will rake all of the leaves that have fallen on his lawn. Toad will be surprised.”
Frog took a rake out of the garden shed.
Toad looked out of his window.
“These messy leaves have covered everything,” said Toad.
He took a rake out of the closet.
“I will run to Frog’s house, Frog will be very pleased.”
Frog ran through the woods so that Toad would not see him.
Toad ran through the high grass so that Frog would not see him.
Frog came to Toad’s house.
He looked in the window.
“Good,” said Frog.
“Toad is out, He will never know who raked his leaves.”
Toad got to Frog’s house.
He looked in the window.
“Good,” said Toad.
“Forg is not home, He will never guess who raked his leaves.”
Frog worked hard.
He raked the leaves into a pile.
Soon Toad’s lawn was clean.
Frog picked up his rake and started home.
Toad pushed and pulled on the rake.
He raked the leaves into a pile. Soon there was not a single leaf in Frog’s front yard.
Toad took his rake and started home.
A wind came, it blew across the land.
The pile of leaves that Forg had raked for Toad blew everywhere.
The pile of leaves that Toad had raked for Forg blew everywhere.
When Frog got home, he said,
“Tomorrow I will clean up the leaves that are all over my own lawn.
How surprised Toad must be!”
When Toad got home,

“I will hit that big animal with this,” said Toad.
“All of his teech will fall out.Frog, do not worry,” cried Toad.
“I am coming to help you!”
Toad ran out of his house.
There was Frog.
“Hello,Toad,” he said.
“I am very sorry to be late. I was wrapping your present.”
“You are not at the bottom of a hole?” asked Toad.“No,” said Frog.
“You are not loast in the woods?” asked Toad.“No,” said Frog.
“you are not being eaten by a big animal?’ asked Toad.
“No, ” said Frog. “Not at all.”
“Oh, Frog,” said Toad,
“I am so glad to be spending Christmas with you.”
Toad opened his present from Frog.
It was a beautful new clock.
The two friends sat by the fire.
The hands of the clock moved to show the hours of a merry Christmas Eve.

Frog and toad 11-A list
11-A list
One morning Toad sat in bed.
“I have many things to do,” he said.
“L will write them, All down on a list, so that l can remember them.”
Toad wrote on a piece of paper:
A List of things to do today
Then he wrote: Wake up
“l have done that,” said Toad,
And he crossed out:
Woke up
Then Toad wrote other things on the paper.
A List of things to do today
Woke up
Eat Breakfast
Get Dressed
Go to Frogs House
Take walkwith Frog
Eat lunch
Take nap
Play games with Frog
Eat supper
Go To sleep
“There,” said Toad.
“Now my day
Is all written down?
He got out of bed
and had something to eat.
Then Toad crossed out:
Eat breakfast
Toad took his clothes
Out of the closet
And put them on.
Then he crossed out:
Get dressed
Toad put the list in his pocket.
He opened the door
and walked out into the morning.
Soon Toad was at Frogs front door.
He took the list from his pocket
And crossed out:
Go to frog’s house
Toad knocked at the door.
“Hello,” said Frog.
“Look at my listof things to do,”
Said Toad.
“Oh,” said Frog.
“That is very nice,”
Toad said, “ My list tell me that we will go for a walk.”
“All right,” said Frog.
“I am ready.”
Frog and Toad went on a long walk.
Then Toad took the list from his pocket again.
He crossed out: Take walk with frog
Just then there was a strong wind.
It blew the list out of Toad’s hand.
The list blew high up into the air.
“Help!” cried Toad.
“My list is blowing away.
What will I do without my list?”
“Hurry!” said Frog.
“We will run and catch it.”
“No!” shouted Toad.
“I cannot do that.”
“Why not?” asked Frog.
“Because,” wailed Toad.
“Running after my list is not one of the things
that I wrote on my list of things to do!”
Frog ran after the list.
He ran over hills and swamps.
But the list blew on and on.
At last Frog came back to Toad.
“I am sorry,” gasped Frog.
“But I could not catch your list.”
“Blah.” said Toad.
“I cannot remember any of the things
that were on my list of things to do.
I will just have to sit here and do nothing,” said Toad.
Toad sat and did nothing.
Frog sat with him.
After a long time Frog said.
“Toad ,it is getting dark.
We should be going to sleep now.”
“Go to sleep!” shouted Toad.
“That was the last thing on my list!”
Toad wrote on the ground
With a stick: Go to sleep
Then he crossed out:
Go to sleep
“There,” said Toad.
“Now my day is all crossed out!”
“I am glad,” said Frog.
Then Frog and Toad went right to sleep.

Frog and toad 12-The Garden
12-The Garden
Frog was in his garden.
Toad came walking by.
“What a fine garden you have, Frog,” he said.
“Yes,” said Frog. “It is very nice, but it was hard work.”
“I wish I had a garden,” said Toad.
“Here are some flower seeds. Plant them in the ground,” said Frog.
“And soon you will have a garden.”
“How soon?” asked Toad.
“Quit soon.” Said Frog.
Toad ran home. He planted the flower seeds.
“Now seeds,” said Toad, “Start growing,”
Toad walked up and down a few times.
The seeds did not start to grow.
Toad put his head close to the ground and said loudly,
“Now seeds, start growing!”
Toad looked at the ground again.
The seeds did not start to grow.
Toad put his head very close to the ground and shouted,
“NOW SEEDS, START GROWING!”
Frog came running up the path.
“What is all this noise?” he asked.
“My seeds will not grow,” said Toad.
“You are shouting too much,” said Frog.
“These poor seeds are afraid to grow.”
“My seeds are afraid to grow?” asked Toad.
“Of course.” said Frog.
“Leave them alone for a few days, let the sun shine on them, let the rain fall on them.
Soon your seeds will start to grow.”
That night Toad looked out of his window.
“Drat!” said Toad.
“My seeds have not started to grow. They must be afraid of the dark.”
Toad went out to his garden with some candles.
“I will read the seeds a story.” said Toad.
“Then they will not be afraid.”
Toad read a long story to his seeds.
All the next day Toad sang songs to his seeds.
And all the next day Toad read poems to his seeds.
And all the next day Toad played music for his seeds.
Toad looked at the ground.
The seeds still did not start to grow.
“What shall I do?” cried Toad.
“These must be the most frightened seeds in the whole world!”
Then Toad felt very tired, and he fell asleep.
“Toad, Toad, wake up,” said Frog.
“Look at your garden!”
Toad looked at his garden.
Little green plants were coming up out of the ground.
“At last,” shouted Toad,
“My seeds have stopped being afraid to grow!”
“And now you will have a nice garden too,” said Frog.
“Yes,” said Toad,
“But you were right, Frog. It was very hard work.”

Frog and toad 13- Cookies
13- Cookies
Toad baked some cookies.
“These cookie所 smell very good,” said Toad.
He ate one.
“And they taste even better,” he said.
Toad ran to Frog’s house.
“Frog, Frog,” cried Toad,
“Taste these coolies that I have made.”
Frog ate one of the cookies.
“These are the best cookies I have ever eaten!” said Frog.
Frog and Toad ate many cookies, one after another.
“You know, Toad,” said Frog, with his mouth full,
“I think we should stop eating. We will soon be sick.”
“You are right,’ said Toad.
“Let us eat one last cookie, and then we will stop.”
Frog and Toad ate one last cookie.
There were many cookies left in the bowl.
“Frog,” said Toad,
“Let us eat one very last cookie, and then we will stop.”
Frog and Toad ate one very last cookie.
“We must stop eating!” cried Toad as he ate another.
“Yes,” said Frog.
Reaching for a cookie.
“We need will power.”
“What is will power?” asked Toad.
“Will power is trying hard not to do something that you really want to do.” said Frog.
“You mean like trying not to eat all of these coolies?” asked Toad.
“Right,” said Frog.
Frog put the cookies in a box.
“There,” he said.
“Now we will not eat any more cookies.”
“But we can open the box,” said Toad.
“That is true,” said Frog.
Frog tied some string around the box.
“There,” he said.
“Now we will not eat any more cookies.”
“But we can cut the string and open the box,” said Toad.
“That is true,” said Frog.
Frog got a ladder.
He put the box up on a high shelf.
“There,” said Frog.
“Now we will not eat any more cookies.”
“But we can climb the ladder and take the box down from the shelf and cut the string and open the box,” said Toad.
“That is true,” said Frog.
Frog climbed the ladder and took the box down from the shelf.
He cut the string and opened the box.
Frog took the box outside.
He shouted in a loud voice, “HEY BIRDS, HERE ARE COOKIES!”
Birds came from everywhere.
They picked up all the cookies in their beaks and flew away.
“Now we have no more cookies to eat,” said Toad sadly.
“Not even one.”
“Yes,” said Frog,
“But we have lots and lots of will power.”
“You may keep it all, Frog,” said Toad.
“I am going home now to bake a cake.”

Frog and toad 16-Tomorrow
16-Tomorrow
Toad woke up.
“Drat!” he said.
“This house is a mess. I have so much work to do.”
Frog looked through the window.
“Toad, you are right,” said Frog. “It is a mess.”
Toad pulled the covers over his head.
“I will do it tomorrow.” said Toad.
“Today I will take life easy.”
Frog came into the house.
“Toad,” said Frog,
“Your pants and jacket are lying on the floor.”
“Tomorrow,” said Toad from under the covers.
“Your kitchen sink is filled with dirty dishes.” said Frog.
“Tomorrow,” said Toad.
“There is dust on your chairs.”
“Tomorrow,” said Toad.
“Your windows need scrubbing.” said Forg.
“Your plants need watering.”
“Tomorrow!” cried Toad.
“I will do it all tomorrow!”
Toad sat on the edge of his bed.
“Blah,” said Toad.
“ I feel down in the dumps.”
“Why?” asked Frog.
“I am thinking about tomorrow.” said Toad.
“I am thinking about all of the many things that I will have to do.”
“Yes,” said Frog.
“Tomorrow will be a very hard day for you.”
“But Frog,” said Toad.
“If I pick up my pants and jacked right now,
Then I will not have to pick them up tomorrow, will I?”
“No,” said Frog.
“You will not have to.”
Toad picked up his clothes.
He put them in the closet.
“Frog,” said Toad.
“If I wash my dishes right now, then I will not have to wash them tomorrow, will I?”
“No,” said Frog.
“You will not have to.”
Toad washed and dried his dishes.
He put them in the cupboard.
“Frog,” said Toad,
“If I dust my chairs and scrub my windows and water my plants right now, then I will not have to do it tomorrow, will I?”
“No,” said Frog.
“You will not have to do any of it.”
Toad dusted his chairs
He scrubbed his windows.
He watered his plants.
“There,” said Toad.
“Now I feel better. I am not in the dumps anymore.”
“Why?” asked Frog.
“Because I have done all that work.” said Toad.
“Now I can save tomorrow for something that I really want to do.”
“What is that?” asked Frog.
“Tomorrow.” said Toad.
“I can just take life easy.”
Toad went back to bed.
He pulled the covers over his head and fell asleep.

Frog and toad 17-The Kite
17-The Kite
Frog and Toad went out to fly a kite.
They went to a large meadow where the wind was strong.
“Our kite will fly up and up,” said Frog.
“It will fly all the way up to the top of the sky.”
“Toad,” said Frog,
“I will hold the ball of string. You hold the kite and run.”
Toad ran across the meadow.
He ran as fast as his short legs could carry him.
The kite went up in the air.
It fell to the ground with a bump.
Toad heard laughter.
Three robins were sitting in a bush.
“That kite will not fly,” said the robins.
“You may as well give up.”
Toad ran back to Frog.
“Frog.” said Toad,
“This kite will not fly. I give up.”
“We must make a second try.” said Frog.
“Wave the kit over your head, Perhaps that will make it fly.”
Toad ran back across the meadow.
He waved the kite over his head.
The kite went up in the air and then fell down with a thud,
“What a joke!” said the robins.
“That kite will never get off the ground.”
“We have to make a third try,” said Frog.
“Wave the kite over your head and jump up and down.
Perhaps that will make it fly.”
Toad ran across the meadow again.
He waved the kite over his head.
He jumped up and down.
The kite went up in the air and crashed down into the grass.
“That kite is junk,” said the robins.
“Throw it away and go home.’
Toad ran back to Frog.
“This is junk,” he said.
“I think we should throw it away and go home.”
“Toad,” said Frog,
“We need one more try.
Wave the kite over your head.
Jump up and down and shout UP KITE UP.”
Toad ran across the meadow.
He waved the kite over his head.
He jumped up and down.
He shouted, “UP KITE UP!”
The kite flew into the air.
It climbed higher and higher.
“We did it!” cried Toad.
“Yes.” said Frog.
“if a running try did not work, and a running and waving try did not work, and a running, waving, and jumping try did not work, I knew that a running, waving, jumping, and shouting try just had to work.”
The robins flew out of the bush.
But they could not fly as high as the kite.
Frog and Toad sat and watched their kite.
It seemed to be flying way up at the top of the

18-Shivers
The night was cold and dark.
“Listen to the wind howling in the trees,” said Frog.
“What a fine time for a ghost story.”
Toad moved deeper into his chair.
“Toad,” asked Frog,
“Don’t you like to be scared? Don’t you like to feel the shivers?”
“I am not too sure.” said Toad.
Frog made a fresh pot of tea.
He sat down and began a story.
“When I was small,” said Frog,
“My mother and father and I went out for a picnic.
On the way home we lost our way.
My mother was worried.
“We must get home,” she said.
“We do not want to meet the Old Dark Frog.”
“Who is that?” I asked.
“A terrible ghost.” said my father.
“He comes out at night and eats little frog children for supper.”
Toad sipped his tea,
“Frog,” he asked,
“Are you making this up?”
“Maybe yes and maybe no,’ said Frog.
“My mother and father went to search for a path.’ said Frog.
“They told me to wait until they came back. I sat under a tree and waited.
The woods became dark, I was afraid.
Then I saw two huge eyes, It was the Old Dark Frog.
He was standing near me.’
“Frog,” asked Toad,
“Did this really happen?”
“Maybe it did and maybe it didn’t,” said Frog.
Frog went on with the story.
“The Dark Frog pulled a jump rope out of his pocket.”
“I am not hungry now.” said the Dark Frog.
“I have eaten too many tasty frog chilren.
But after I jump rope one hundred times, I will be hungry again. Then I will eat YOU!”
“The Dark Frog tied one end of the rope to tree, “Turn for me!” he shouted.
I turned the rope for the Dark Frog.
He jumped twenty times.
“I am beginning to get hungry.” said the Dark Frog.
He jumped fifty times, “I am getting hungrier,” said the Dark Frog.
He jumped ninety times, “I am very hungry now!” said the Dark Frog.
“What happened then?” asked Toad.
“I had to save my life.” said Frog.
“I ran around and around the tree with the rope, I tied up the Old Dark Frog.
He roared and screamed.
I ran away fast.”
“I found my mother and father.” said Frog.
“We came safely home.”
“Frog,” asked Toad. “Was that a true story?”
“Maybe it was and maybe it wasn’t.” said Frog.
Frog and Toad sat close by the fire.
They were scared.
The teacups shook in their hands.
They were having the shivers.
It was a good, warm feeling.

19-The Hat
On Toad’s birthday Frog gave him a hat.
Toad was delighted, “Happy birthday,” said Frog.
Toad put on the hat.
It fell down over his eyes.
“I am sorry,” said Frog.
“That hat is much too big for you, I will give you something else.”
“No,” said Toad.
“This hat is your present to me, I like it, I will wear it the way it is.”
Frog and Toad went for a walk.
Toad tripped over a rock.
He bumped into a tree,
He fell in a hole.
“Frog,’ said toad,
“I can’t see anything, I will not be able to wear your beautiful present.
This is a sad birthday for me.’
Frog and Toad were sad for a while.
Then Frog said,
“Toad, here is what you must do. Tonight when you go to bed you must think some very big thoughts. Those big thoughts will make your head grow larger.
In the morning your new hat may fit.’
“What a good idea.’ said Toad.
That night when Toad went to bed he thought the biggest thoughts that he could think.
Toad thought about giant sunflowers.
He thought about tall oak trees, he thought about high mountains covered with snow.
Then Toad fell asleep.
Frog came into Toad’s house.
He came in quietly.
Frog found the hat and took it to his house.
Frog poured some water on the hat
He put the hat in a warm place to dry.
It began to shrink.
That hat grew smaller and smaller.
Frog went back to Toad’s house.
Toad was still fast asleep.
Frog put the hat back on the hook where he found it.
When Toad woke up in the morning, he put the hat on his head.
It was just the right size.
Toad ran to Frog’s house.
“Frog, Frog!” he cried.
“All those big thoughts have made my head much larger.
Now I can wear your present!”
Frog and Toad went for a walk.
Toad did not trip over a rock.
He did not bump into a tree.
He did not fall in a hole.
It turned out to be a very pleasant day after Toad’s birthday.

Frog and toad 20-Alone
20-Alone
Toad went to Frog’s house.
He found a note on the door.
The note said,
“Dear Toad, I am not at home. I went out, I want to be alone.”
“Alone?” said Toad.
“Frog has me for a friend. Why does he want to be alone?’
Toad looked through the windows,
He looked in the garden,
He did not see Frog.
Toad went to the woods, Frog was not there.
He went to the meadow, Frog was not there.
Toad went down to the river, There was Frog.
He was sitting on an island by himself.
“Poor Frog,” said Toad.
“He must be very sad, I will cheer him up.’
Toad ran home.
He made sandwiches,
He made a pitcher of iced tea.
He put everything in a basket.
Toad hurried back to the river.
“Frog,” he shouted,
“It’s me, It's your best friend, Toad!”
Frog was too far away to hear.
Toad took off his jacket and waved it like a flag.
Frog was too far away to see.
Toad shouted and waved, but it was no use.
Frog sat on the island,
He did not see or hear Toad.
A turtle swam by.
Toad climbed on the turtle’s back.
“Turtle,” said Toad,
“Carry me to the island, Frog is here. He wants to be alone. ”
“If Frog wants to be alone,’ said the turtle.
“Why don’t you leave him alone?”
“Maybe you are right,” said Toad.
“Maybe he does not want me to be his friend anymore.’
“Yes, maybe.’ said the turtle as he swam to the island.
“Frog!” cried Toad.
“I am sorry for all the dumb things I do.
I am sorry for all the silly things I say.
Please be my friend again!”
Toad slipped off the turtle.
With a splash, he fell in the river.
Frog pulled Toad up onto the island.
Toad looked in the basket.
The sandwiches were wet.
The pitcher of iced tea was empty.
‘Our lunch is spoiled.” said Toad.
“I made it for you, Frog, so that you would be happy.
“But Toad,” said Frog.
“I am happy, I am very happy.
This morning when I woke up I felt good because the sun was shining.
I felt good because I was a frog.
And I felt good because I have you for a friend.
I wanted to be alone.
I wanted to think about how fine everything is.
“Oh,” said Toad.
“I guess that is a very good reason for wanting to be alone.”
“Now,” said Frog.
“I will be glad not to be alone. Let’s eat lunch.”
Frog and Toad stayed on the island all afternoon.
They ate wet sandwiches without iced tea.
They were two close friends sitting alone together.

Winnie the witch 女巫温妮
Winnie the witch
Winnie the Witch lived in a black house in the forest. The house was black on the outside and black on the inside. The carpets were black. The chairs were black . The bed was black and it had black sheets and black blankets. Even the bath was black.
Winnie lived in her black house with her cat, Wilbur. He was black too. And that the trouble began.
When Wibur sat on a chair with his eyes open Winnie could see him. She could see his eyes, anyway.
But when Wilbur closed his eyes and went to sleep,Winnie couldn’t see him at all.So she sat on him.
When Wilbur sat on the carpet with his eyes open, Winnie could see him.She could see his eyes anyway.
But when Wilbur closed his eyes and went to sleep, Winnie couldn’t see him at all.So she tripped over him.
One day, after a nasty fall, Winnie decided something had to be done. She picked up her magic wand, waved it once and ABRACADABRA!Wilbur was a black cat no longer. He was bright green!
Now, when Wilbur slept on a chair, Winnie could see him.
When Wilbur slept on the floor, Winnie could see him.
And she could see him when he slept on the bed.
But, Wilbur was no allowed to sleep on the bed.
So Winnie put him outside. Outside in the grass.
When Wilbur sat outside in the grass, Winnie couldn’t see him, even when his eyes were wide open. Winnie came hurrying outside, tripped over Wilbur, turned three somersaults, and fell into a rose bush. This time, Winnie was furious. She picked up her magic wand, waved it five times and…
ABRACADABRA! Wilbur had a red head, a yellow body, a pink tail, blue whiskers, and four purple legs. But his eyes were still green. Now, Winnie could see Wilbur when he sat on a chair, when he lay on the carpet, when he crawled into the grass.
And even when he climbed to the top of the tallest tree.
Wilbur climbed to the top of the tallest tree to hide. He looked ridiculous and he knew it. . Even the birds laughed at him. Wilbur was miserable. He stayed at the top of the tree all day and all night.
Next morning Wilbur was still up the tree. Winnie was worried. She loved Wilbur and hated him to be miserable.
Then Winnie had an idea. She waved her magic wand and ABRACADABRA! Wilbur was a black cat once more. He came down from the tree, purring.
Then Winnie waved her wand again, and again, and again.
Now instead of a black house, she had a yellow house with a red roof and a red door. The chairs were white with red and white cushions. The carpet was green with pink roses. The bed was blue, with pink and white sheets and pink blankets. The bath was a gleaming white. And now, Winnie can see Wilbur no matter where he sits.

winnie the witch--winnie in winter
Winnie the Witch looked out of her window and shivered.
Her garden was covered in snow.
Her pond was covered in ice.
Icicles hung from roof tops.
"I'm tired of winter," said Winnie.
Wilbur came in through the cat flap.
His feet were wet, and his whiskers were frozen.
Wilbur was tired of winter, too.
Suddenly, Winnie has an idea.
She stopped what she was doing, took down her big book of spells, and read it carefully.
Then she put on her woolly coat, her fluffy hat, her snow boots, her gloves, and her scarf.
She picked up her wand and she went outside.
Wilbur already had a fur coat on, so he went outside too.
He thought something exciting might happen, and he wanted to watch.
Winnie shut her eys.
Then she stood on tiptoe, counted to ten, waed her wand five times, and shouted,
ABRACADABRA!
And something magical happened!
Above Winnie's house the sun shone brightly.
The sky was deep blue.
All the snow had disappeared.
It was no longer winter at Winnie's house.
It was sunny summer.
Winnie took off her woolly coat, her fluffy hat, her snow boots, her gloves, and her scarf.
She got her deckchair and went out in the garden to sit in the sun.
"This is lovely," said Winnie.
"Summer is much nicer."
Wilbur lay down in the sun and purred.
This is lovely, he thought.
Summer is much nicer than winter.
All over the garden, little animals ere waking up.
They had been having their winter sleep, and they were very cross.
They came out into the garden, yawning sleepily.
"It's too early for summer," they grumbled.
"We want to go back to sleep."
The flowers had been asleep under the snow.
They woke up and began to grow.
Up came the leaves, and then the flowers.
But the sun was too hot for them.
Their heads began to droop.
All the lovely flowers were dying.
Winnie was worried.
The animals and the flowers didn't like her lovely summer.
Then she heard a very strange noise...
Winnie turned around, and there behind her was a great crowd of people.
They were running along the road towards her house.
They crowded into her garden.
They took off their coats, their hats, their boots, their gloves, and their scarves.
They sat in the sunshine.
They walked on Winnies's floweres.
They put orange peel on Winnie's grass.
They paddled in Winnie's pond.
Soon there was no room for Winnie and Wilbur in the garden.
They went inside and looked out of the window.
The noise was horrible.
The mess was horrible.
Winnie's lovely summer was horrible.
Then Winnie heard another strange noise.
A tinkling noise...
Somebody was selling ice creams in her garden.
Winnie as furious.
She grabbed her wand.
She rushed outside.
She stamped her foot, shut her eyes, counted to ten, waved her wand five times and shouted,
ABRACADABRA!
The sun disappeared.
The blue sky disappeared.
And the snow began to fall.
The people put on their coats, their hats, their boots, their gloves, and their scarves, and rushed home.
The animals went back to bed, to finish their winter sleep.
The flowers went back under the ground to wait for spring.
Winnie and Wilbur went back inside.
Winnie made a cup of hot chocolate and toasted a muffin.
Wilbur had a saucer of warm milk.
Then Winnie snuggled into bed.
Wilbur curled up at the foot of the bed and purred.
"This is warm and cosy," said Winnie.
"Winter is lovely too."

A HOUSE FOR HERMIT CRAB – by Eric Carle
A HOUSE FOR HERMIT CRAB – by Eric Carle
0 “Time to move,” said Hermit Crab one day in January. “I’ve grown too big for this little shell.”
He had felt safe and snug in his shell. But now it’s too snug. Hermit Crab stepped out of the shell and onto the floor of the ocean. But it was frightening out in the open sea without a shell to hide in.
“What if a big fish comes along and attacks me?” he thought. “I must find a new house soon.”
Early in February, Hermit Crab found just the house he was looking for. It was a big shell, and strong. He moved right in, wiggling and waggling about inside it to see how it felt.
It felt just right.
“But it looks so-well, so plain,” thought Hermit Crab.
In March, Hermit Crab met some sea anemones. They swayed gently back and forth in the water.
“How beautiful you are!” said Hermit Crab. “Would one of you be willing to come and live on my house? It’s so plain, it needs you.”
“I’ll come,” whispered a small sea anemone.
Gently, Hermit Crab picked it up with his claw and put it on his shell.
In April, Hermit Crab passed a flock of starfish moving slowly along the sea floor.
“How handsome you are!” said Hermit Crab. “Would one of you be willing to decorate my house?”
“I would,” signaled a little sea star.
Carefully, Hermit Crab picked it up with his claw and put it on his house.
In May, Hermit Crab discovered some coral. They were hard, and didn’t move.
“How pretty you are!” said Hermit Crab. “Would one of you be willing to help make my house more beautiful?”
“I would,” creaked a crusty coral.
Gingerly, Hermit Crab picked it up with his claw and placed it on his shell.
In June, Hermit Crab came to a group of snails crawling over a rock on the ocean floor. They grazed as they went, picking up algae and bits of debris, and leaving a neat path behind them.
“How tidy and hard-working you are!” said Hermit Crab. “Would one of you be willing to come and help clean my house?”
“I would,” offered one of the snails.
Happily, Hermit Crab picked it up with his claw and placed it on his shell.
In July, Hermit Crab came upon several sea urchins. They had sharp, prickly needles.
“How fierce you look!” said Hermit Crab. “Would one of you be willing to protect my house?”
“I would,” answered a spiky sea urchin.
Gratefully, Hermit Crab picked it up with his claw and placed it near his shell.
In August, Hermit Crab and his friends wandered into a forest of seaweed. “It’s so dark here,” thought Hermit Crab.
“How dim it is,” murmured the sea anemone.
“How gloomy it is,” whispered the starfish.
“How murky it is,” complained the coral.
“I can’t see!” said the snail.
“It’s like nighttime!” cried the sea urchin.
In September, Hermit Crab spotted a school of lanternfish darting through the dark water.
“How bright you are!” said Hermit Crab. “Would one of you be willing to light up our house?”
“I would,” replied one lanternfish. And it swam over near the shell.
In October, Hermit Crab approached a pile of smooth pebbles.
“How sturdy you are!” said Hermit Crab. “Would you mind if I rearranged you?”
“Not at all,” answered the pebbles.
Hermit Crab picked them up one be one with his claw and built a wall around his shell.
“Now my house is perfect!” cheered Hermit Crab.
But in November, Hermit Crab felt that his shell seemed a bit too small. Little by little, over the year, Hermit Crab had grown. Soon he would have to find another, bigger home.
But he had come to love his friends, the sea anemone, the starfish, the coral, the sea urchin, the snail, the lanternfish, and ever the smooth pebbles.
“They have been so good to me,” thought Hermit Crab. “They are like a family. How can I ever leave them?”
In December, a smaller hermit crab passed by.
“I have outgrown my shell,” she said.
“Would you know of a place for me?”
“I have outgrown my house, too,” answered Hermit Crab. “I must move on. You are welcome to live here- but you must promise to be good to my friends.”
“I promise,” said the little crab.
The following January, Hermit Crab stepped out and the little crab moved in.
“Couldn’t stay in that little shell forever,” said Hermit Crab as he waved goodbye.
The ocean floor looked wider than he had remembered, but Hermit Crab wasn’t afraid.
Soon he spied the perfect house- a big, empty shell. It looked, well, a little plain, but…
“Sponges!” he thought. “Barnacles! Clown fish! Sand dollars! Electric eel! Oh, there are so many possibilities! I can’t wait to get started!”

Mummy Laid an Egg
Mummy Laid an Egg
"Right," said mum and dad.
"We think it's time we told you how babies are made."
"OK," we said.
"Girl babies are made from sugar and spice and all things nice," said mum.
"Boy babies are made from slugs and snails and puppy dogs' tails," said dad.
"Sometimes you just find them under stones," said dad.
"You can grow them from seeds in pots in the greenhouse," said mum.
"Or just squidge them out of tubes."
"Some babies are delivered by dinosaurs."
"You can make them out of gingerbread," said mum.
"Mummy laid an egg on the safa," said dad.
"It...
...exploded.
And you shot out."
"Hee hee hee, ha ha ha, hoo hoo hoo. What a load of rubbish," we laughed.
"But you were nearly right about the SEEDs, the TUBE and the EGG."
"We don't think you know how babies are really made. So we're doing some drawings to show you."
"Mummy does have eggs. They are inside her tummy."
"And daddy has seeds in seed pods outside his bady."
"Daddy also has a tube. The seeds from the pods come out of it."
"The tube goes into mummy's tummy through a little hole. Then the seeeds swim inside using their tails."
"Here are some ways mummies and daddies fit together."
"When the seeds are inside mummy's tummy they start The Great Egg Race."
"The winner gets the egg and it starts to grow into a very small baby."
"the baby gets bigger and Bigger and BIGGER. Mummy gets fatter and Fatter and FATTER."
"When it's ready, out pops the baby."
"So now YOU know...
...and so does everyone else!"
