The Kissing Hand 魔法亲亲

The Kissing Hand
By Audrey Penn

To: Stefanie Rebecca Koren and children everywhere who love to be loved.

Chester Raccoon stood at the edge of the forest and cried.

" I don't want to go to school," he told his mother. " I want to stay home with you. I want to play with my friends. And play with my toys. And read my books. And swing on my swing. Please may I stay home with you?"

Mrs. Raccoon took Chester by the hand and nuzzled him on the ear.
" Sometimes we all have to do things we don't want to do." She told him gently. "Even if they seem strange and scary at first. But you will love school once you start."

"You'll make new friends. And play with new toys."
"Read new books. And swing on new swings. Besides," she added. "I know a wonderful secret that will make your nights at school seem as warm and cozy as your days at home."

Chester wiped away his tears and looked interested. "A secret? What kind of secret?"

"A very old secret," said Mrs. Raccoon. "I learned it from my mother, and she learned it from hers. It is called the Kissing Hand."
"The Kissing Hand?" asked Chester. "What's that?"

"I'll show you." Mrs. Raccoon took Chester's left hand and spread open his tiny fingers into a fan. Leaning forward, she kissed Chester right in the middle of his palm.

Chester felt his mother's kiss rush from his hand, up his arm, and into his heart. Even his silky, black mask tingled with a special warmth.

Mrs. Raccoon smiled. "Now," she told Chester, "whenever you feel lonely and need a little loving from home, just press your hand to your cheek and think, 'Mommy loves you. Mommy loves you.' And that very kiss will jump to your face and fill you with toasty warm thoughts."

She took Chester's hand and carefully wrapped his fingers around the kiss. "Now, do be careful not to lose it," she teased him. "But, don't worry. When you open your hand and wash your food, I promise the kiss will stick."

Chester loved his Kissing Hand. Now he knew his mother's love would go with him wherever he went. Even to school.
That night, Chester stood in front of his school and looked thoughtful. Suddenly, he turned to his mother and grinned.

"Give me your hand," he told her.
Chester took his mother's hand in his own and unfolded her large, familiar fingers into a fan. Next, he leaned forward and kissed the center of her hand.

"Now you have a Kissing Hand, too," he told her. And with a gentle "Good-bye" and "I love you", Chester turned and danced away.

Mrs. Raccoon watched Chester scamper across a tree limb and enter school. And as the hoot owl rang in the new school year, she pressed her left hand to her cheek and smiled.

The warmth of Chester's kiss filled her heart with special words.

"Chester loves you," it sang. "Chester loves you."

Table of Contents

Introduction January: A heavy snow
March: Lambing timeApril: Spring growth June: Haymaking July: A summer fair
August: Harvesttime October: Fall arrives December: Winter returns
THIS IS THE STORYof
a year on a farm. All the pictures have exactly
the same view. But each one shows a different
time of the year. Lots of things happen during this year.
Can you spot them all?
Some pictures have parts of the walls taken away.
This helps you see inside the farm’s buildings.
You can follow all the action on the farm
as the months pass. The calendar on each
right-hand page tells you what month it is.
As you read, look for people that appear every month.
Look out especially for the farmer, her
husband, their three children, and Grandma
and Grandpa. Don’t miss the team of
scientists and their amazing discoveries!
Think about what stories these people might tell
about life at the farm.
Can you
find... a sled?
It is winter. A thick layer of
snow covers the ground and
the roofs of the buildings. The
children are having fun in the
snow. But there’s work to do too!
The farmworkers take hay to
feed the animals. Others shovel
snow off the paths. A snowplow
clears one of the lanes.

a chicken coop a pig
Spring comes to the farm. A
school group is visiting to see sheep
give birth to lambs. The birthing is
called lambing. The cattle must stay
in their barn. Not enough grass is
outside for them to eat. The farmer
spreads fertilizer on a field. It will
help the crops grow. One of the
tractors gets stuck in the mud!
a cat a beehive a scarecrow
Later in spring, flowers bloom
on the trees. Lambs play in the
fields. Ducklings swim with their
parents in the pond. The farmer
sprays the crops to keep pests
away. Runners race through the
middle of the farm. A team of
archaeologists starts digging.
These scientists learn about the
past by digging up old objects. a pony a rabbit
The warm, sunny days of
summer have arrived. It is time
to shear the sheep. A special
shaver is used to remove the wool
from the sheep. Farmworkers
cut the hay. A machine forms
it into bales. The hay will feed
the animals next winter. Many
people have come to visit the
farm. Hikers pitch their tents. The

Birds soar above the action. A
judge awards prizes for the best
cows. People at the fair can buy

including Grandpa! The scientists
have uncovered an old building.

pours it into a trailer. an axa ducksome pumpkinsa veterinarian
The trees have changed color.
Some people pick mushrooms.
Bales of straw are stacked in the
barn. Straw is made from wheat
stalks. The animals will sleep on
straw during the winter. The
farmer plows the field to make it
ready for the next crop. A

Winter has returned, and cold
rain falls. Christmas is coming soon.
The last few leaves on the trees blow
away. A tractor gets stuck in the
mud (again). Some of the roofs
must be repaired. Only the pigs and
sheep are still in the fields. Some
rabbits stay snug in their burrows!

A Closer Look
This book has a lot to find. Did you see people who showed up
again and again? Think about what these people did and saw
during the year. If these people kept journals, what would
they write? A journal is a book with blank pages where people
write down their thoughts. Have you ever kept a journal?
What did you write about?
Try making a journal for one of the characters in this book. You will need
a pencil and a piece of paper. Choose your character. Give your character a
name. Write the name of the month at the top of the page. Underneath, write
about the character’s life during that month. Pretend you are the character. What do
you do all day long? Is your life hard or easy? Why? What have you noticed about
the other people at the farm? Have you seen anything surprising? What? What do
you hope to do next month?
Don’t worry if you don’t know how to spell every word. You can ask a parent or teacher
for help if you need to. And be creative! Index chickens, 8 cows, 8, 14 ducklings, 10 farmer, 8, 10, 16, 18 hay, 6, 12 lambs, 8, 10 pigs, 8, 16, 20 rabbits, 12, 20 scientists, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18 sheep, 8, 12, 20 straw, 18 tractor, 8, 14, 20
wheat, 16, 18
Horses! Ducks! Cows! Would you like to see what
happens during a year at a farm? Then come spend the next twelve
months at this farm. Check out eight action-packed scenes for a
bird’s-eye view of spring planting, a summer festival, and an
autumn harvest. Look out for an escaped cow and a surprise
landing by a hot air balloon. Keep your eye on the calendar too.
By spending a whole year at a farm, you can watch events unfold
as the seasons change.

WEMBERLY WORRIED 我好担心
Wemberly worried.
Wemberly worried about everything. Big things, little things, and things in between.
Wemberly worried in the morning. She worried at night. And she worried throughout the day.
"You worry too much," said her mother.
"When you worry, I worry," said her father.
"Worry, worry, worry. Too much worry."said her grandmother.
At home, Wemberly worried about the tree in the front yard, and the crack in the living room wall, and the noise the microwave made.
At the playground, Wemberly worried about the chains on the swings, and the bolts on the slide, and the bars on the jungle gym.
And always, she worried about her doll, Wendy.
"Don't worry," said her mother.
"Don't worry," said her father.
But Wemberly worried. She worried and worried and worried.
When Wemberly was especially worried, she rubbed Wendy's ears. Wemberly worried that if she didn't stop worrying, Wendy would have no ears left at all.
On her birthday, Wemberly worried that no one would come to her party.
"See, there was nothing to worry about,"said her mother. But then Wemberly worried that there wouldn't be enough cake.
On rainy days, Wemberly worried that there would be too many pink raincoats on the street.
"See, there was nothing to worry about,"
said her father. But then Wemberly worried because she was the only one.
"You worry too much," said her mother.
"When you worry, I worry," said her father.
"Worry, worry, worry. Too much worry,"said her grandmother.
Soon, Wemberly had a new worry: school. Wemberly worried about the start of school more than anything she had ever worried about before.
By the time the first day arrived, Wemberly had a long list of worries.
What if no one else has spots? What if no one else wears stripes? What if no one else brings a doll? What if the teacher is mean? What if the room smells bad? What if they make fun of my name? What if I can’t find the bathroom? What if I hate the snack? What if I have to cry?
Grand "Don't worry,"         said her grandmother.
"Don't worry," said her father. But Wemberly worried. She worried, and worried, and worried. SHE WORRIED ALL THE WAY THERE.
While Wemberly's parents talked to the teacher, Mrs. Peachum, Wemberly looked around the room. Then Mrs. Peachum said,
"Wemberly, there is someone I think you should meet."
Her name was Penny. She was standing by herself. She was wearing stripes. She was holding a doll.
At first, Wemberly and Penny just peeked at each other.
"This is Wendy," said Wemberly.
Penny: "This is Peggy," said Penny.
Wendy waved. Penny waved back. "Hi," said Wendy.
Penny: "Hi," said Peggy. "I rub her ears," said Wemberly.
Penny: "I rub her nose," said Penny.
Throughout the morning, Wemberly and Penny sat side by side and played together whenever they could. Wendy and Peggy sat side by side, too.
Wemberly worried. But no more than usual. And sometimes even less.
Before Wemberly knew it, it was time to go home.
"Come back tomorrow," called Mrs. Peachum, as the students walked out the door. Wemberly turned and smiled and waved. She said,"I will. Don’t worry."

Possum Magic 袋貂魔法

Once upon a time, but not very long ago, deep in the Australian bush, lived two possums.Their names were Hush and Grandma Poss.

Grandma Poss made bush magic. She made wombats blue and kookaburras pink. She made dingoes smile and emus shrink. But the best magic of all was the magic that made Hush invisible.

What adventures Hush had!
Because she couldn’t be seen, she could be squashed by koalas.
Because she couldn’t be seen, she could slide down kangaroos.
Because she couldn’t be seen she was safe from snakes, which is why Grandma Poss had made her invisible in the first place. But one day, quite unexpectedly, Hush said, ‘Grandma, I want to know what I look like. Please could you make me visible again?
‘Of course I can,’ said Grandma Poss, and she began to look in her magic books.

She looked into this book and she looked into that. There was magic for thin and magic for fat, magic for tall and magic for small, but the magic she was looking for wasn’t there at all.Grandma Poss looked miserable.
‘Don’t worry, Grandma,’ said Hush.‘I don’t mind.’But in her heart of heart she did.

All night long Grandma Poss thought and thought. The next morning just before breakfast she shouted, ‘It’s something to do with food.People food, not possum food, but I can’t remember what. We’ll just have to try and find it.’ So later that day, they left the bush where they’d always been to find what it was that would make Hush seen.

They ate Anzac biscuits in Adelaide, mornay and Minties in Melbourne, steak and salad in Sydney and pumpkin scones in Brisbane.Hush remained invisible.
‘Don’t lose heart!’ said Grandma Poss.‘Let’s see what we can find in Darwin.’

It was there they in the far north of Australia that they found a Vegemite sandwich.Grandma Poss crossed her claws and crossed her feet.Hush breathed deeply and began to eat.

‘A tail!A tail!’ shouted both possums at once. For there it was.A brand new visible tail.

Later, on a beach in Perth, they ate a piece of pavlova.Hush legs appeared. So did her body.

‘You look wonderful, you precious possum!’ said Grandma Poss.‘Next stop—Tasmania!’And over the sea they went.

In Hobart, late one night in the kitchens of the casino, they saw a lamington on a plate. Hush closed her eyes and nibbled.Grandma Poss held her breath and waited.
‘It’s worked! It’s worked!’ she cried, and she was right.Hush could be seen from head from head to tail.Grandma Poss hugged Hush and they both danced ‘Here we go round the lamington plate till early in the morning.’

From that time onwards Hush was visible. But once a year, on her birthday, she and Grandma Poss ate a Vegemite sandwich, a piece of pavlova and a half a lamington, just to make sure that Hush stayed visible for ever.Andshe did.

My Dad

He’s all right, my dad.
My dad isn’t afraid of ANYTHING,
even the Big Bad Wolf.
He can jump right over the moon,
and walk on a tightrope (without falling off).
He can wrestle with giants,
or win the fathers’ race on sports day, easilly.
He’s all righ, my dad.
My dad can eat like a horse,
and he can swim like a fish.
He’s as strong as a gorilla,
and as happy as a hippopotamus.
He’s all right, my dad.
My dad’s as big as a house,
and as soft as my teddy.
He’s as wise as an owl,
except when he tries to help.
He’s all right, my dad.
My dad’s a great dancer,
and a brilliant singer.
He’s fantastic at soccer,
And he makes me laugh. A lot.
I love my dad. And you know what?
HE LOVES ME!
(And he always will.)
