How to catch a star
Once there was a boy
And the boy loved stars very much.
Every night the boy watched the stars from his window and wished he had one of his very own.
He dreamed how this star might be his friend. They would play hide-and-go-seek
And take a long walk together.
The boy decided he would try to catch a star. He thought that getting up early in the morning would be best, because then the star would be tired from being up in the sky all night.
So, the next day he set out at sunrise. But he could not see a star anywhere. He sat down and waited for one to appear.
He waited … and he waited …
… and ate lunch …
.. and waited. And after dinner he waited some more.
Finally, just before the sun was about to go away, he saw a star.
The boy tried to jump up and grab it. But he could not jump high enough.
So, very carefully, he climbed to the top of the tallest tree he could find. But the star was still way out reach.
He thought he might lasso the star with the life belt from his father’s boat.
But it was much too heavy for him to carry.
He thought he could fly up in his spaceship and just grab the star. But his spaceship had run out of petrol last Tuesday when he flew to the moon.
Perhaps he could get a seagull to help him fly up into the sky to reach his star?
But the only seagull he could find didn’t want to help at all.
The boy thought he would never catch a star.
Just then he noticed something floating in the water. It was the prettiest star he had ever seen. Just a baby star. It must have fallen from the sky.
He tried to fish the star out with his hands.
But he couldn’t reach it.
Then he had an idea. The star might wash up on the shore. He ran back along the jetty to the beach.
Then he waited and walked … and watched and waited …
… and, sure enough,
The star washed up on the bright, golden sand.
The boy had caught a star.
A star of his very own.

the Way Back Home

(the Way Back Home)天上人间
原文
Once there was a boy
And one day, as he was putting his things back in the cupboard, he found an aeroplane.
He didn’t remember leaving it in there but he though he’d take it out for a go right away.
The plane lifted off the ground and up into the sky …
Higher and higher and higher.
Suddenly the plane spluttered … it had run out of petrol.
Now the boy was stuck on the moon. What was he to do?
He was all alone and afraid and soon his torch began to go out.
Up in space someone else was in trouble too. His engine had broken down …
And steering the ship towards a flicker of light, he landed on the moon with a bump.
Both the boy and the Martian could hear noises in the dark and both feared the worst.
But as their eyes got used to the dark, they both realized they’d met someone else in trouble.
They weren’t alone any more.
The boy showed the Martian his empty petrol tank and the Martian showed the boy his broken engine.
Together they thought of ways to fix their machines and how to get them both back home.
The boy jumped down to earth to get things they would need … right down into the sea …
… and swam towards home.
But by the time he got there, the boy was tired out so he sat in his favorite chair, just to catch his breath. His favorite program was just starting and he settled down to watch.
Suddenly he remembered what he should be doing and rushed off to the cupboard to get what he needed. He ran outside and shouted. But there was no reply, he couldn’t be heard.
The boy climbed to higher ground, called again, and waited.
This time, a rope was lowered.
The boy began to climb and the Martian began to pull, and soon the boy was back on the moon.
The boy fixed up the Martian’s engine with the right spanner and the Martian filled the boy’s petrol tank.
They said goodbye and thanked each other for their help. They wondered if they’d ever meet again.
After a long night, they were both finally off the moon.
The boy went one way and the Martian went another, both on their way back home.

My friend the moon
My friend the moon

English by Sasha Quinton

Alone at sea in the indigo night,
I found a moon slumbering tight.

I called out his name so his dreaming would end,
“Dear Mr. Moon, would you be my friend?“

He happily came right down to my boat,
“How oddly,“ he said, “you keep you afloat.“

“I am swinging on a star,
And I think it much better, much better by far!“

And the moon began to rock and sway,
To show he had a better way.

He even did a great back flip,
Which had always been his favorite trick.

But then his string tore with a SNAP!
“Oh dear!“ I cried, “What a mishap!“

He fell right down in a quick flash,
And hit the water with a SPLASH!

He began to sink and did not stop,
“Til all I saw was his moon-top.

But then he shwoed a great knack,
For floating up onto his back.

But I could not just watch him float,
So helped him up into my boat.

I took my towel and dried him off,
So that he would not catch a cough.

And then I began to row to shore,
So that he could dry some more.

I thought it best to bring him jome,
Or he would be left alone.

I carried him up to my small house,
Though it was built more for a mouse.

And somehow got him through the door,
With a touch of magic to be sure!

Then we sat and sang together,
“Lady Blue“ and “Stormy Weather.“

And how we twirled and twirled all night,
Just me and Moon, what a sight!

We danced until our feet were sore,
We danced until we could no more.

Then we sat and read a book,
And Mr. Moon laughed ’til his belly shook.

We cooked together, then ate a bit,
And wished each other a fond “Goodnight!“

And while he slept I sailed again,
To see if I could find another friend.

In the middle of the sea,
Mr. Sun smiled down at me.

My new friends woke to find each other,
As friend and friend, brother and brother.

And together we now live and play,
Day and night, night and day!

The Cat and the Dog

English by Sasha Quinton

What a warm and sunny day!

Perhaps this dog would like to play.

Oops! You didn’t find that fun?

I guess that I had better run.

On this ball, I’ll bounce away
And you won’t catch me, not today!

Now I’ll climb up in this tree,
Way too high for you to see.

I’ll hide as quiet as a mouse,
Then jump on top of this small house.

Oh look! I see a little boat,
I hope that you know how to float.

You must be so very wet,
But you’ll not catch me.No, not yet.

I will climb up on this slide,
Then take it down for a quick ride.

And as you make your way on down,
I will swing right off the ground.

Oh, dear me!

Is this the end?

Why no, of course.I’ve found a friend!

Once upon a summer’s day
My friend the moon leapt in the bay.
Before too long, his friend the sun,
Dove in too to join the fun!
And soon the happy two were three,
My friends the moon, the sun, and me!
We climbed inside my trusty boat,
To sail away, to glide, and float.
The sun raised up the anchor below,
And the moon and I began to row.
We sailed up to a volcano’s peak,
That boiled and blew a lava leak.
But my friend the sun knew what to do,
And climbed up to its flaming flue.
He sat inside its blazing top,
And soon the fire began to stop.
The sun spun down the mountainside,
In a great rolling, spinning slide.
And then he beamed from ear to ear,
And the moon and I let out a cheer.
We floated away on the bluest of seas,
With the moon for a sail and the sun for a breeze.
And all of a sudden, from high up afar,
Fell down from the night, a small shooting star!
The little star sunk in the watery blue,
And this time the moon knew just what to do.
He dove in the sea, before we could blink,
Just as the poor star had started to sink.
The moon held the star by her twinkling ends,
And lifted her up, with the help of his friends
And then we rowed back safely to shore,
And we three good friends now became four!
We happily climbed up the island’s steep side,
And the sun and I took the moon for a ride,
As we four reached the mountain’s tip-top
The moon and the star leapt off with a hop.
They floated up into the indigo night,
And lit up the world with a shimmering light.
And before long, it was time for goodbyes,
So I read my three friends sweet, soft lullabies.

One Snowy Night

One Snowy Night
It's cold in the park in winter. But percy the park keeper doesn't mind.
He puts on his warm coat and his big scarf and wears two pairs of wolly socks inside his wellington boots.
Percy likes to be out in the fresh air.
In the middle of the park there is a little hut. This is where percy lives.
When it's too cold to be outside, percy goes into his hut where it's cosy and warm.
The animals who live in the park all know percy's hut. Every day he shares his lunch with them.
One winter's night it was so cold it began to snow. Great snow flakes fell past the window of percy's hut..
"Brr," said percy, "i think i will need an extra blanket tonight."
He made himself some hot cocoa and got ready for bed.
Suddenly, percy heard a tapping sound. There was somebody at the door.
"now who can that be at the time of night?" thought percy. He went to the door and looked out.
There on the step was a squirrel. It looked very cold and miserable.
"i can't get to sleep, percy," said the squirrel. "my bed is full of snow."
"oh dear," said percy, "never mind, i've got plenty of room for two."
The squirrel snuggeled down next to percy and soon began to feel warm.
Knock! Knock! It was the door again.
"Now who can that be?" thought percy.
Standing outside were two shivering rabbits.
"it's freezing," said one rabbit.
"we are frozen," said the other.
"you poor things," said percy. "come in and warm up."
The rabbits squeezed into the bed next to percy and the squirrel. There wasn't much room.
"could you face the other way?" percy asked the squirrel. "you tail is tickling my nose."
Knock Knock!
"Oh dear," said percy. "now there is someone else at the door!"
It was a fox. He looked very cold and hungry.
"can i come in too?" he asked.
Percy scratched his head and thought for a minute.
"well, if you promise to behave," he said.
"i promise," said the fox, and he squeezed into bed next to all the other animals.
Bump! Oops! The squirrel fell out.
"who did that?" asked the squirrel crossly.
Knock, knock, knock!
"good gracious!" said percy.
"it's the door again."
This time percy had quite a surprise.
There on the step was a badger, two ducks, a hedgehog and a whole family of mice!
They all wanted a bed for the night.
Poor old percy! And poor old percy's bed!
The animals pushed and shoved and rolled around the bed, but there was just not enough room for them all.
Soon the bed covers ended up in a big, tight ball.
Then, bump! The covers rolled right off the bed and everybody fell on to the floor.
"Oh, dear," said percy. "this won't do at all. My bed is just too small."
Suddenly, one of the mice pricked up his ears.
"what's that noise?" he squeaked.
Everyone listened hard. Now they could call hear it. There was a scratching, scraping sound. It seemed to be coming from underneath them.
"there's something moving under the floor," whispered percy.
The animals all looked frightened and the mice all started to squeak at once.
"oh, dear!"
What can it be?
It might be a monster!
With fierce claws!
And sharp teeth!
The noise grew louder and louder. Then, one of the floorboards began to move.
"look out! It's coming up through the floor!"
"help!" cried the animals and they all ran to hide.
But percy wasn't frightened. He started to chuckle. Then he laughed out loud. A small dark head was sticking up through the floorboards.
"this isn't a monster," said percy. "it's a mole!"
"i'm sorry to burst in like this," said the mole.
"i knocked on the door but nobody heard me."
Percy helped the mole up through the hole in the floor, sat him on the hot water bottle to get warm and put the floorboard back.
'it's all right everyone,' he called.
"you can come out now."
But nobody moved. Nobody stired. Nobody wanted to come out.
The squirrel was tucked away in the pocket of percy's dressing gown.
The hedgehog was in his coat.
The fox ...
The rabbit ...
The badger ...
And the ducks were all safely hidden away.
The mice had even squeezed themselves into percy's slippers!
Everyone had found a cosy bed.
"well i never!" said percy.
Percy yawned and snuggled down in his own bed once again.
"that's better. Now i've got plenty of room," he said. "and a little to spare ... For a mole!"
Looked carefully at the picture. Can you see a pencil sharpener, a feather, a ginger nut biscuit, a button, a thimble, a butterfly, a sweet, a ladybird, a cotton reel and one of percy's dice?

melaniezengxing 发表于 2012-2-22 10:39:14

"let's race him there and have some fun!" said the badger, and he began to whisper excitedly.
The others squeaked with delight as they listened. Only the hedgehog wasn't so sure. He found the maze rather confusing.
"i don't think i'll come," he said. "i've ... Er ... Got something to do."
Percy parked his wheelbarrow by the entrance to the maze.
"aren't you worried about getting lost in the maze?" the squirrel asked.
"that's why i need the string," said percy. "i leave a trail of string from where i'm working back to the entrance of the maze. That way, i can't get lost, you see?"
The squirrel didn't really see because he wasn't really listening..
"i'm not sure if i like spring or autumn the best," he said.
At the back of the maze, a line of animals was disappearing one by one into the thick hedge.
"we'll go right to the middle and wait for percy," whispered the badger.
"then we'll jump out and and give him a big surprise," giggled the rabbits.
"ssshh!" said the fox loudly, which set them all giggleing again.
Percy worked hard with hedge clippers and little by little the maze began to look much tidier. All the time, percy followed his string in and out of the maze.
By now, the surprise party had made its way to the centre of the maze, where there stood a stone bench. The bench had been carved to look like a lion.
At first the animals waited eagerly for percy to come. But percy took longer than they expected. Soon, they began to yawn. Then they fell asleep.
Percy's hedge clippers clacked on and on, only stopping now and then when percy went to dump a barrow load of clippings.
As percy pushed his empty wheelbarrow back towards the maze, a hedgehog called to him.
"hello percy. Did you get a big surprise from the animals in the maze?"
"a big surprise?" percy stopped and smiled.
"er ... Not yet," he said.
When at last percy and the squirrel worked their way to the centre of the maze, there was no big surprise waiting for them.
Percy chuckled at the sight of the sleeping animals in front of him.
"let's have some fun ourselves," he whispered.
Percy tiptoed to the back of the lion-shaped bench and coughed loudly.
"ahem. I beg your pardon," said percy in a deep, growly voice.
The fox opened one eye.
"it's not that i mind so very much," went on percy, "but i do like people to ask before they go to sleep on me."
The other animals began to stir.
The fox stared at the lion's head. He couldn't believe his ears.
"i'm very sorry," said the fox. "we didn't realise. We thought you were just a seat." the other animals opened their eyes in amazement to hear the fox talking to a lump o stone. They were even more amazed when the stone answered back.
"did you indeed?" said the growly voice."Hmm."
'we are very sorry," said the fox. "will you tell us your name?"
Percy growled. "my name is ..."
But at that moment, one of the rabbits looked behind hte bench.
"his name is percy!" cried the rabbit.
The game was up and a chuckling percy came out from behind the bench.
"percy's tricked us, instead!" said the badger.
The fox suddenly started to giggle. That set everybody else giggling again.
"Come on," said percy, as he collected his tools together, "who'd like toasted teacakes for tea? I'll show you the way out of the maze.
All we have to do is to follow my str..."
But percy didn't finish. Standing there in front of him, was his little squirrel helper. Th squirrel was holding a larger ball of string.
"don't forget this, percy," he said. "i've wound it all up for you."
Percy looked dismayed.
"don't worry," said the fox, "i think this is the way out." "no, no," said the badger. "i'm sure it's this way."
"surely it's this way," said another voice.
"i might be wrong," said the squirrel holding the ball of string, "but i've got a feeling it's this way."Percy groaned. " and i've got a feeling we'll be having toasted teacakes for breakfast!"
Which path should percy take? Can you find the secret way out of the maze?

The treasure hunt

The treasure hunt
"Good morning!" said percy the park keeper as he stepped out of his hut. In his hand, percy was holding some posters which he had just made. He pinned one of them to his door.
"what does it say?" asked one of percy's rabbit friends.
"oh, i'm sorry," said percy, and he read out loud ...
i'm organizing a
Treasure Hunt
All those who would like to come meet at the bandstand after breakfast, tomorrow morning.
Signed Percy (ME).
"i wanted to come," said the badger.
"so do i," said the fox. "what is it?"
"it's a game," said percy. "one person goes off and leaves a trail of clues for the others to follow. The clues are messages, and one clue leads to the next one until you find the treasure at the end."
"i can read a bit," said the fox. He and other animals stared at another of percy's posters. Percy smiled as he noticed they were holding it upside down.
"i'll do drawings instead of messages," he said.
Next morning, when the animals met together, there was no sign of percy. They thought that percy must have forgotten, until one of the squirrels noticed something.
"look! There is a piece of paper with a picture on it. It could be a clue."
The squirrel was right. On the paper, percy had drawn a picture of see-saw.
"that must be where we have to go first," said the badger.
They hurried over to the playground. Sure enough, another piece of paper had been pinned to the see-saw.
"i'll get it," said one of the mice and he scampered up the the see-saw.
This time percy had drawn a picture of statue.
"i know where that is," said a rabbit. "follow me!" and off they went again.
By now, percy had put nearly all his pieces of paper in place. He whistled as he walked along a favourite path at the edge of the park.
"Only two left," said percy as he tucked one of his clues into a crack in signpost.
He stopped for a moment and gazed over the fields which lay beyond the park.
Percy reached into his pocket and was pleased to find some chocolate. It was chocolate money, wrapped in gold paper.
"a good job i brought a snack," said percy, "i'm feeling quite peckish."
Slowly he ate every piece of the chocolate.
Then percy realised what he had done. He had eaten the treasure.
The animals were having great fun. Percy's trail of clues led them all over the park.
The see-saw, the statue, the tool shed. The bridge. In every place they found a picture showing them the where to go next.
But now, as they searched for a clue around a signpost at the edge of the park, it didn't seem quite so easy.
"bother," said the badger. "i can't see a clue anywhere."
The fox kept looking at the letters on the signpost. He was sure they were trying to tell him something.
"i wonder ..." he muttered to himself.
Suddenly the fox announced, "this signpost is the next clue. We have to follow it."
"but it leads out of the park," said the hedgehog.
It was too late. The fox had already set off. The others looked at each other,, then they followed after him.
The fox led them across the field. In the middle, there stood a tall tree which had been struck by lightning.
Further on, there was a cattle shelter. Something was moving behind it.
"it looks like percy," said the fox. "that must be where he's putting the treasure."
The animals rushed towards the cattle shelter.
It wasn't percy, but there was something there, and the something said ...
"MOOOO!"
It was a young calf.
"Mmmoo!" said the calf loudly again.
The animals squealed and ran in fright towards the tree in the middle of the field.
The calf chased after them. She wanted to play.
The animals scrambled up the tree as fast as they could. They didn't like this game at all.
"what do we do now?"
Wailed the hedgehog.
He was answered by someone who had been watching it all.
"you won't find any clues up there," chuckled percy. "why don't you come down and meet Lucy?"
Lucy the calf was very friendly. When the animals had calmed down and been properly introduced, she gave them a ride across the field to the park fence.
Everyone chattered happily when they bumped along.
"we didn't find the treasure," said the fox, "but we found a friend."
Percy coughed and wiped the corner of his mouth with his handkerchief.
"and don't you think friends are better than treasure?" he said.
"well," said the hedgehog, "i think they are the same."
Percy smiled.
"i think you are right," he said.
Percy doesn't know he dropped three pieces of his treasure on his way around the park.
Can you find them?

After the Storm

After the Storm

Percy the park keeper couldn't sleep.
Outside his hut a great storm was raging, with thunder and lightning and pouring rain.
Percy wasn't frightened by the thunder and he loved to watch the lightning as it lit up the whole park. He didn't even mind the rain.
But there was one thing that Percy didn't like.
He didn't like the wind. It blew down fences in the park and ripped branches off the trees. He didn't like it one bit.
"Oh dear," he sighed as he watched from his window. The wind tugged at the trees, making them creak and groan. "It looks like I'm going to be busy tomorrow."
He pulled his pillow over his head and tried to get to sleep.
Percy was up early in the morning. The wind had stopped and the sky was clear.
Percy loaded up his wheelbarrow with all the things he would need to make repairs and clear up after the storm. Then he set off to inspect the damage.
He felt happy as he took deep breaths of the fresh, clean air. Perhaps the damage wouldn't be too bad.
But he was wrong. Something dreadful had happened. A great big oak tree that had stood by itself on top of a little hill had been blown over by the storm.
The giant tree had been one of Percy's favourites. Now it looked very sad lying on its side with its mass of tangly roots sticking up into the air.
But it wasn't just one of Percy's favourite trees; some of Percy's animal friends lived there. Now their homes were wrecked. Percy hurried up to the fallen tree.
The animals were gathered by the tree looking cross and unhappy. When they saw Percy everyone started talking at once.
Percy sat down with his friends and listened as they told how the storm had brought down the great tree.
"and now we had nowhere to live," said the badger. "Some of us lived in the tree and some of us lived under it. But we are all homeless now."
Some of the rabbits looked close to tears and the fox was very sniffy. Percy passed him his handkerchief and the fox blew his nose.
Percy stood up.
"We will just have to find you somewhere else to live," he said. "come on everybody. Jump into my wheelbarrow." the animals felt better now that Percy was with them.
First he took them to the pine wood. But nobody wanted to live there.
"too dark," squeaked the mice.
"too gloomy," said the hedgehog.
So percy took them to the shrubbery. But nobody wanted to live in the shrubbery either.
"No big trees," complained the squirrels.
"No big roots," moaned the rabbits.
"Never mind," said Percy. "We will try across the stream."
Percy began to push the heavy wheelbarrow over a little bridge that crossed the stream. But as he got to the middle of the bridge, two things happened.
Percy stumbled and the wheelbarrow decided to see what it would be like to be a boat. SP-LASH!
Suddenly Percy and his friends found themselves drifting downstream to where the stream opened out into a lake.
Percy stood up and looked around.
"we will have to paddle back to the shore," he said. But then something caughthis eye.
"No wait," said Percy. "Let's paddle across to the other side of the lake. I have an idea."
The animals looked puzzled. What was percy up to? Slowly they paddled the wheelbarrow accross the lake.
"here we are!" said Percy. The squirrels jumped ashore and tied up the wheelbarrow to the roots of an enormous hollow tree that grew by the water's edge.
"Now this is my plan," said Percy. Everyone gathered round as Percy explained his idea.
"is everybody clear?" everyone nodded. "then let's get to work!"
They began by unloading all Percy's tools and the planks of wood from the wheelbarrow. Then Percy explained exactly what he wanted each one to do.
He showed the badger how to use a saw and he showed the squirrel how to knock in nails. The fox drill holes and the rabbit screwed in screws. The mice were kept busy fetching and carrying for everyone else.
At lunchtime they took a short break to share some of percy's peanut butter sandwiches. Then they got busy again.
At long last their work was finished. A very tired Percy stood back to admire their handiwork.
Now the squirrels had a brand new home ... And so did the mice.
The rabbits had new home ...
And so did the badger. And the fox. And the hedgehog. In fact, every one of Percy's friends had a fine new place to live.
"well done everybody!" said percy. "this is the best tree house i've ever seen!" "what about you percy?" called the badger. "aren't you going to join us?" percy smiled. "i think i'll stick to my old hut," he said. "besides," said percy, taking an acorn out of his pocket, "i still have one job left to do back at the little hill!"

Down the back of the chair

"Down the back of the chair"
Our car is slow to start and go. We can't afford a new one.
Now if you please, Dad's lost the keys. We're facing rack and ruin.
No car, no work! No work no pay!
We're getting poorer day by day.
No wonder Dad is turning grey.
The morning is a blue one.

Nothing but dockets in his pockets.
Raging with despair
Dad acts appalled! Though nearly bald
He tries to tear his hair.
But Mary who is barely two
Said ‘Dad should do what I would do
I lose a lot, but I find a few
Down the back of the chair.'

He's patted himself, and searched the shelf. He's hunted here and there,
So now he'll kneel and try to feel right down the back of the chair.
Oh it seemed to grin as his hand went in.
He felt a tingling in his skin.
What will a troubled father win
From down the back of the chair?

Some hairy string and a diamond ring
Were down the back of the chair,
Pineapple peel and a conger eel
Were down the back of the chair
A sip, a sup, a sop, a song. A spider seven inches long,
No wonder that it smells so strong
Down the back of the chair.

A packet of pins and one of the twins
Down the back of the chair.
A pan, a fan that belonged to Gran
Down the back of the chair . . .
A crumb, a comb, a clown, a cap
A pirate with a treasure map,
A dragon trying to take a nap
Down the back of the chair.

A cake, a drake, a smiling snake,
Down the back of the chair
A string of pearls, a lion with curls
Down the back of the chair
A skink, a skunk, a skate, a ski,
A couple of elephants drinking tea
The bandersnatch and the bumblebee
Down the back of the chair.

But what is this? Oh bliss! Oh bliss!
(Down the back of the chair).
The long lost will of Uncle Bill
(Down the back of the chair).
His money box all crammed with cash
Tangled up in a scarlet sash
There's pleasure, treasure, toys and trash
Down the back of the chair.

‘I've found my dreams,' our father beams.
(Down the back of the chair).
‘At last I see how life can be.
(Down the back of the chair).
Forget the keys! We're poor no more
Just call a taxi to the door.'
A taxi shot out with a roar
From down the back of the chair.

The chair, the chair, the challenging chair,
The champion chair, the cheerful chair,
The charming chair, the children's chair,
The chopped and chipped but chosen chair
To think our fortune waited there
Down the back of the chair.

The Incredible Book Eating Boy

Henry loved books. But not like you and I love books, no. Not quite … … Henry loved to eat books.
It all began quite by mistake one afternoon when he wasn’t paying attention.

He wasn’t sure at first, and tried eating a single word, just to test.

Next, he tried a whole sentence and then the whole page.

Yes, Henry definitely liked them. By Wednesday, he had eaten a whole book.

And by the end of the month, he could eat a whole book in one go.

Henry loved eating all sorts of books: story books, dictionaries, Atlases, joke books, books of facts, even maths books. But red ones were his favorite.

And he was going through them at a fierce rate.

But here is the best bit:

The more he ate, the smarter he got.

A: book goes in.

B: information goes to brain (brain getting bigger)

C: Belly gets full

He ate a book about goldfish and then he knew what to feed Ginger. Before long he could do his father’s crossword in the newspaper,

…and was even smarter than his teacher in school.

Henry loved being smart. He thought that if he kept going, he might even become the smartest person on Earth.

So he kept eating books …

And he kept getting smarter … and smarter

… and smarter. He went from eating books whole to eating them three or four at a time. Books about anything. Henry wasn’t fussy, and he wanted to know it all.

Bu then things started going not quite so well.

“I’m going to eat you!”

In fact, they started going very very wrong. Henry was eating too many books, and too quickly at that.

Bite

Chew

Chew

Chew

Gulp

Green

Greener

Greenest

Boke. Huuh

He was beginning to feel a little ill.

But here is the worst bit. 6+2=3

Everything he was learning was getting mixed up … 2+6=elephant

He didn’t have time to digest it properly.

It became quite embarrassing for him to speak.

Suddenly Henry didn’t feel very smart at all.

More than one person told him he should stop eating books.

“No more books!”

“Your head and belly can’t cope.”

“Besides, it means no one else can enjoy them.”

So, Henry gave up eating books, and sat sadly for a long time. What was he to do?

Then, after a while, and almost by accident, Henry picked up a half-eaten book from the floor. But instead of putting it in his mouth… Henry opened it up …

… and began to read. And it was so good.

Henry discovered that he loved to read. And he thought that if he read enough he mightstill become the smartest person on Earth.

It would just take a bit longer.

Now Henry reads all the time … although every now and then.

There was a time in the forest …

When everything was not as it should have been.

Everyone who lived there had been noticing strange things. Branches, they agreed, should not disappear from trees like that.

Someone, they agreed again, must be stealing them and they each in turn blamed the other.

But they all had a solid alibi which meant it couldn’t possibly be them. So the tree thief must be someone else.

It was all very mysterious indeed.

An investigation was launched to get to the bottom of things.(Don’t cross)

They were each given a different job to do so the tree thief could be caught.

The bear kept his word and made it up to them.

And as the others helped him gather up the old paper planes, they had an idea …(seeds)

Billy's New Home

Hi. My name is Billy.

I抦 8 years old, though I look younger 慶ause I'm small for my age. For as long as I can remember I lived with my mom.

Because we never really had a home, we stayed in all different kinds of places. Usually we stayed with my mom抯 friends. We had to sleep on the floor, and sometimes, I think mom forgot to feed me.

After a while, mom's friends got tired of us, so we moved into a shelter for homeless people. It was actually pretty nice there. I had my own little bed, I got to eat three meals a day, and there were a few other kids there for me to play with.

We were only in the shelter for a little while when I woke up one morning and saw mom crying. She always looked sad and kind of tired, but this was different. Her long dark hair was all messy, she had the same clothes on that she had worn the day before and her eyes were all puffy. She was packing my worn out little brown suitcase.

"Why are we moving now?", I asked.

At first she didn't say anything. She just cried more. It was sort of weird.

Finally, she told me she loved me, but she said she just couldn't take care of me anymore. She said she had some problems to take care of so that she could be a good mother to me. Until then, I had to go live with someone else.

I cried.

I cried even worse than when I scraped both my knees. I thought maybe I was just having a bad dream.

A lot of times, I wished for a life like other kids had. I wished I had a home and maybe even a dad, but even without that, at least I was used to the way things were. I really didn抰 want to have to go somewhere else.

Mom hugged me, promising that someday we would be together again and I cried even harder.

After a while, she finished packing my stuff and a lady with short brown hair and glasses came to talk to us. Her name was Annie and she was a Social Worker. Under her arm was a folder full of papers that my mom had to sign. Annie said she found a nice home for me. She called it a "foster" home.

She told me I was going to live with a nice family who would take very good care of me, but I was scared. What if these people didn抰 like me? What if they didn't feed me?

Mom pulled me close, kissed me and hugged me for a very long time. "Everything will be all right", she whispered over and over again. Then she started to cry.

Soon it was time to leave. Annie promised I would see my mom very soon, but I didn抰 want to let go. Why was this happening to me?

Annie took me to the doctor. She said I needed a check-up to make sure I was in good shape before I went to the foster home.

The doctor was a short, older man with no hair. He looked in my ears, and my mouth. He weighed me. He measured how tall I was. He even checked my hair for bugs!

When the doctor was finally finished checking me over, he gave me a lollipop and told me everything was fine.

When we left, I started to think the doctor had made a mistake. My tummy was all funny inside, like I was gonna be sick. I wondered where my mom was.

Annie told me it was OK to be scared. She said I could cry if I wanted to. I just looked at her. I抦 8 years old, not a cry-baby. I rubbed away the tear in my eye.

Annie smiled and pushed my hair back out of my eyes. "Sometimes things happen to us", she said. "We don't always know why, and even though things seem pretty bad sometimes, it gets better every day". I hoped she was right.

Annie stopped the car in front of a very big, white house. "This is it", she said. "This is where you are going to live for a while. There are some other foster kids here and that抯 almost as good as having a brother and sister of your own". I wasn抰 sure if I抎 like that. I'd always wanted a brother, but this was different.

The house was probably the biggest house I ever saw. It had lots of windows with matching curtains on them and a very big yard. There were pretty flowers all over the place. It抯 the kind of house my mom would love. Annie said we could sit in the car until I was ready to go in. It took a while. Even when I went to get out, my heart was pounding like a big drum.

Annie took my hand and smiled again. She gave me a card with her phone number on it and said I could call her anytime I needed someone to talk to. Under her arm was another folder full of papers for the foster mom to sign. Carrying my suitcase and my toys, we walked up to the front door.

An older lady answered the door. She was kind of small with gray hair, and told me her name was Fran as she shook my hand.

The house was like no place I had ever been before. It was clean and it smelled like cookies. There was nice furniture in every room! "There are two other foster children living here", Fran said. "They should be home from school soon and you can all get acquainted over a plate of cookies, fresh from the oven, but first, let me show you around."

As we walked through the house, Fran told me that her kids were all grown up and living far away now. She said her husband抯 name was Paul and that he was at work.

We stepped into a room that had little pictures of puppies all over." This will be your bedroom", she said.

I had to take an extra breath. I'd never had my own bedroom before. This one had twin beds with soft green blankets, and it had a dresser to put my clothes in. Fran offered to help me put my stuff away, but I told her I could do it.

After Fran and Annie left to sign the papers, I looked around the room. I put some of my stuff away, but then I started to think about my mom. My tummy hurt worse than before and I started to cry.

When Fran heard me, she came in, gave me a hug and told me we could unpack later. It was time for Annie to leave. As I said good-bye I had never felt so lonely.

Back in the house Fran asked me if I wanted to help get the snacks ready for the other kids. There was a ten year old girl and a seven year old boy who had lived here for a long time. Thinking of mom again, I told Fran I would be leaving very soon.

Soon a school bus drove up to the house and dropped the kids off. They came running inside and seemed very excited to see me, since they had known I was coming.

John told me his name first. He was about my size, and he had curly hair and was missing one front tooth. He said his missing tooth helped him whistle better.

The girl抯 name was Angela. She was taller than me, with long black hair and a shy smile. As we ate our cookies, they told me everything would be OK. Because they were foster children too, they said they knew how I felt. And that was kinda nice.

When we finished, John and Angela showed me around the house. John抯 room had blue walls with posters of baseball players hanging all over the place. There were two beds in his room, but he only used one of them. Even his blankets were covered with baseball pictures. He told me I could play with some of his toys if I asked first. Then he showed me which he would share and which ones were too special to share. That was OK. I brought a few toys of my own, and Fran said I could play with anything in the playroom down in the basement.

Angela's room was a little smaller. This one also had two beds, each with pink blankets. Everywhere I looked there was a teddy bear picture. Angela offered to share her toys too.

Soon it was dinner time. Paul came home from work just as we sat down at the table. He was the tallest man I had ever seen in my whole life! He had gray hair and he was wearing a suit. As he shook my hand, he smiled at me and said, "Welcome to our home Billy!" I think he really meant it. I can't remember ever having a dad, so even a foster dad was going to be something new.

Dinner was really good. We had chicken and vegetables with cherry pie for dessert. I wondered if they had dinner all the time here. My mom forgot about food sometimes and maybe Fran would too. Just in case, when no one was looking, I stuck a piece of chicken in my pocket. When I was excused, I ran up to my room and put the chicken under my pillow. If Fran forgot dinner, at least I would have something to eat.

After dinner I played out back with John and Angela. There was a swing-set, a sand-box, and a basketball hoop. We had fun, and for a little while, I almost forgot about being sad. When it started to get late, we had to go in and take a bath to get ready for bed. Fran helped me because I didn't know where anything was. She showed me where to put my dirty clothes, where the towels were, where the soap was, and she gave me a toothbrush.

After my bath, Fran told us all a bedtime-story, and then it was time for bed.

As Fran and Paul tucked me in, Paul noticed a funny smell in my room...like chicken. All I could do was hold my breath. Should I tell them about the chicken under my pillow? What if they got mad and yelled at me? I swallowed hard, then reached under my pillow and pulled out the chicken. I told them that I'd put it there just in case they didn't have time to make me dinner tomorrow. They both smiled and promised that they would never forget dinner. I felt tons better. Fran gave me a new pillow case, because mine had chicken crumbs all over it. Then they shut off my light and left me alone so I could go to sleep.

In the dark, I started missing my mom all over again. I'd had to sleep in lots of strange places, but Mom had always been there to protect me. Now, she was gone. I started to cry. I worried that maybe if I liked it here too much they wouldn抰 let me see my mom again.

Fran and Paul must have heard me crying because they came in to my room, sat on the edge of my bed and we talked for a while. They said if I wanted, I could use a spare twin bed and be a roommate until I was ready to have my own room full-time, and that made me feel a little bit better.

A week later, Annie picked me up and said it was time to visit my mom. I was very excited. I was all cleaned up and dressed in a new pair of jeans and a new red shirt that Fran had given me.

We had our visit in a special place where Annie said families like mine could spend some nice time together. There were a bunch of other families in different rooms. Annie took me to a room with a couch, a table, a few chairs and a stack of coloring books with crayons.

At first I was worried because I didn't know if my mom would come. Annie had called the shelter and they said my mom was on her way, but she was late. We waited and waited. Finally, she came! I was so happy to see her. I ran up to her and gave her a great big hug. I could tell she had been crying, but she was happy to see me. She looked really nice. Her hair was fixed up really pretty and she had new clothes on too. She didn't look so tired either.

Mom gave me a present, a picture of us together. I told her I would put it in my room at my foster home. Annie let us talk for a while then she said it was time to go back to Fran抯. Still, I didn't want to leave my mom again. Annie said I would see her every week and Mom promised not to be so late next time. We both cried as we kissed each other good-bye.

When we got back to the house, Fran was waiting for me by the door. She said she missed me and asked how my visit went. I told her all about it. I told her I felt sad because I missed my mom. She said she knew how I felt, because sometimes she misses her kids too. I think she really does know how I feel.

I've been here at Fran's for a while now. I'm getting used to the way they do things here, and I think they're getting used to me.

Sometimes I still get sad or angry, but not as much as I used to. I know Fran and Paul will take good care of me here in my foster home.

My mom said she's glad I'm living with a nice family. And Annie says that someday soon, I'll be with my mom again.

TOPS AND BOTTOMS

TOPS AND BOTTOMS
By Janet Stevens

ALL:
Once upon a time, there lived a very lazy bear who had lots of money and lots of land.

1:
His father was a hard worker, but bear just wanted to sleep, and sleep, and sleep.

2:
A hare lived down the road. Hare was clever, but sometimes he got into trouble.

3:
He once owned land, but now he had nothing. He had lost a risky bet with tortoise.

4:
Hare and his family were in very bad shape. The children were hungry.

5:
Hare and Mrs. Hare put their heads together, and cooked up a plan.

ALL:
Hare hopped down to Bear’s house. Bear, of course, was asleep.

1:
Wake up Bear!! It’s me, Hare, and I have an idea.

2:
Bear opened up an eye and grunted.

3:
We can be business partners! All we need is your field, and I’ll do the hard work of planting and harvesting. We’ll split the profit right down the middle.

4:
Huh? Said Bear.

5:
Bear, do you want the top half, or the bottom half? It’s up to you− tops or bottoms.

ALL:
I’ll take the top half Hare.

1:
It’s a done deal, bear.

2:
While Bear was sleeping, Hare and his family went to work.

3:
Bear slept as the crops grew.

4:
When it was time for the harvest, Hare told Bear, “You get the tops, and I get the bottoms.”

5:
Hare and his family dug up the carrots, radishes, and the beets.

ALL:
Hare plucked of all the tops, tossed them into a pile for Bear, and put the bottoms aside for himself.

1:
bear stared at his pile. Hare got all the best parts.

2:
You chose the tops Bear, Hare said.

3:
Hare, you tricked me. Plant the field again, and I want the bottoms.

4:
OK , said Hare. Bear went back to sleep, and Hare and his family planted the field again.

5:
Hare called out to Bear. You get the bottoms and I get the tops.

ALL:
Hare and his family gathered up the lettuce, broccoli, and the celery.

1:
Hare pulled off the tops, and left the bottoms for Bear.

2:
Hare, you cheated me again. You plant the field again, and you owe me one season of both tops and bottoms.

3:
OK Bear, you’ll get both tops and bottoms. It’s a done deal.

4:
Bear went back to sleep, and Hare and his family watered, and weeded, and watered, and weeded some more.

5:
Bear slept as the crops grew.

ALL:
Wake up Bear! This time you get the tops and Bottoms!

1:
There is front of Bear’s house was corn. Hare tugged at the roots at the bottom, and the tassels at the top and put them in a pile for Bear.

2:
Hare carefully collected the ears of corn from the middle and placed them in his own pile.

3:
Bear rubbed his eyes. Hare said, you get the tops and bottoms, and I get the middles. It’s a done deal!

4:
Bear was wide awake. That’s it Hare!!! From now on, I’ll plant my own crops and take the tops, bottoms, and the middle.

5:
Hare and his family scooped up the corn, and hopped down the road toward home.

ALL:
Bear never again slept through a season of planting and harvesting. Hare bought back his land with the profitfrom the crops, and he and Mrs. Hareopened a vegetable stand. Hare and Bear learned to live happily as neighbors.

THEY NEVER BECAME BUSINESS PARTNERS AGAIN!!

Snail's Legs

One day Snail and Frog were sitting
on a big rock talking about races
they had won when they met a man
walking along the road.

"I am the King's chef," the man said,
"and I am looking for an animal with
very strong lets to help me prepare
a special birthdsay treat for him.
You are both such fast runners, you
must have very strong legs indeed!"

The two friends were amazed.
They had never met the King
and now here was a chance to do
something special for his birthday.

That would be a great honour indeed.

If you take a mouse to the movies,
he'll ask you for some popcorn.

When you give him the popcorn,
he'll want to string it all together.

Then he'll want to hang it on a Christmas tree.
You'll have to buy him one.

On the way home, he'll see a snowman in your neighbor's yard.
He'll want to make one of his own.

Then he'll need a carrot for a nose.
When he's all finished, he'll decide to build a fort.
He'll ask you to help him.

Then he'll want to make some snowballs and have a snowball fight.
Playing ourside will make him cold.
He'll want to go inside and curl up on the couch.

He'll ask you for a blanket.
He'll probably sing along.

The carols will remind him of his Christmas tree,
so he'll want to make ornaments.

You'll get him some paper and glue.
He'll ask you for glitter.

When the ornaments are done,
he'll hang them all up.

Then he'll stand back to look at the tree. He'll notice his popcorn string is missing!

So he'll want to make another one.
He'll ask you for some popcorn.

And chances are,
八九不离十,when you give him the popcorn,
he'll want you to take him to the movies.

“哇哇哇!”He'll try it on and shout, "BOO!"
It'll scare him so much, he'll knock over the paints.

So he'll use the sheet to clean up the mess.
Then he'll ask for some soap to wash itout.

He'll probably want to hang the sheet up to dry.

He'll go outside to put it on the clothesline.

When he's out in the yard, he'll see your mother's blackberry bushes.

Seeing the blackberries will remind him of her jam.
He'll probably ask you for some.

And chances are...

If you give him the jam,
he'll want a muffin to go with it.

"Down the back of the chair"

ALL:

The Giant Mushroom

The Giant Mushroom
Once there was a bunny named Skippy, who lived in a burrow, with his younger brother. One day, there was no food in the burrow for their breakfast. The brother was very hungry and began to cry. Skippy was very sorry for him and went out for something suitable for a meal.

He searched all through the woods, but could not find anything fit for his brother to eat.
He is so said about his brother being hungry, that he felt like crying.
“I must ask my friends for some food,” he said. So off he went to his friends.

“My dear friends,” he said, “My little brother is crying from hunger. I looked and looked, but could not find anything for him to eat. May I have some of your food please?” He asked all of his friends, but no one gave him even a crumb of or a wilted carrot top.
“Oh no.” they all cried, “We don’t have anything extra. We have food for ourselves only.”
“Oh! Please, give me some small thing. My little brother is crying!” Bumpy pleaded and pleaded, but they didn’t listen.

He went away, his head down and his little bunny tail dragging.
“Oh, my poor brother must be very hungry by now,” he wailed.
He was so sad. He sat down in the middle of the meadow and cried.
“What can I give my little brother?” He asked the buttercups.
He thought and thought.

Then, suddenly he saw a small bud fallen on the ground.
“What is it?” He picked it up.
Oh! A dried up mushroom bud! But how can my little brother, eat this tiny thing? He wondered.
I must try to make something out of this, he thought.

“Oh!” he cried happily. He got a good idea.
“I’ll try.”
He dug a little hole in the ground and planted the bud.
“Oh! Please, little bud! Please, grow up! Grow, grow, grow up quickly! My little brother is crying in hunger,” Skippy pleaded.
“对啦!”跳跳想到一个好办法,高兴地喊了起来。
“我要试一试。”
他在地上挖了一个小坑,把种子埋了进去。
跳跳央求道:“小种子,求求你快长大,快快长大吧!我弟弟都饿哭啦!”

The sun, who was looking down on little Skippy, felt very sad.
Oh, poor bunny! He is trying to earn food for his brother. I must help him, he thought.
And he gave a lot of sunshine and warmth for the bud to grow quickly.

The rain too, was watching Skippy and felt sorry for him.
I must help this poor bunny, who is trying hard to feed his little brother, the rain thought.
He started raining to give lots of water for the bud to grow.

The earth too, felt sorry for him.
He seems to be a very good brother. I too, must help this poor bunny’s effort, thought the earth.
And, the earth gave the mushroom bud, support and nourishment to grow.

With the help of the sun, the rain and the earth, the mushroom bud grew very fast.
It grew, grew and grew.
And soon, it became a very, very big mushroom.

“Oh! It’s a giant mushroom!”
Skippy skipped around in circles, he was so happy.
He run home and brought his brother back, to see the giant mushroom.
The little brother too, was very happy.
“呀,这真是一颗大蘑菇啊!”
跳跳绕着大蘑菇跳来跳去,他真是太高兴啦!
跳跳跑回家,把弟弟带来看这棵大蘑菇,弟弟也好开心啊!

“This is too much for us. We should call our friends to share with us. We should not eat this all alone,” said Skippy.
Even though his friends didn’t give him anything, he wanted to give them what he could. And so he called all his friends.
All of them came running.
It was too big for them, too.
They could never finish eating the giant mushroom.

“Skippy, thank you very much for sharing this tasty mushroom with us, even though we haven’t given you, anything. We are very sorry about it,” they said.
“No, it’s all right. After all, we are friends,” said Skippy. He was very happy.

And of course, he didn’t forget to thank the sun, rain and earth, who had help him so much.
The giant mushroom gave food and shelter to all of them, every day. They all live together happily, under the giant mushroom, forever.
